Athena Design to Show Cross Platform OpenDoc spreadsheet parts at COMDEX

November 12, 1995 - COMDEX - Athena Design, Inc. will demonstrate Mesa<TM>
spreadsheet OpenDoc components running on both Macintosh and OS/2 operating
systems in the OpenDoc pavilion in Booth #L4830 in North Hall this week at
COMDEX. The Mesa OpenDoc component is built using the Mesa Developer Object
Kit (Mesa DOK<TM>), a set of cross platform C++ objects that provides custom
programmers and independent software vendors the ability to integrate
spreadsheet functionality in their applications with as few as 20 lines of
code.

"OpenDoc presents Athena with a great way to package the Mesa spreadsheet
objects," said David Pollak, President of Athena Design. "Users and
developers will be able to take advantage of the growing base of OpenDoc
tools and components to build compound documents and rich, cross-platform
applications."

Mesa is the first OpenDoc spreadsheet component and is the first cross-platform
OpenDoc component from an ISV. Athena Design has more than three years of
experience delivering spreadsheet components. Athena Design was an early
supporter of OpenDoc and joined Component Integration Laboratories, the open
industry association that manages the OpenDoc technical standard, and whose
lead partners are Apple, Adobe and IBM.

"As one of our leading OpenDoc developers, Athena Design has taken advantage
of the cross-platform potential of OpenDoc to demonstrate the Mesa spreadsheet
part on both Macintosh and OS/2," said Gina Clark, OpenDoc Product Line Manager
for Apple Computer. "Mesa demonstrates how developers can leverage OpenDoc
technology to deliver powerful component software applications without limiting
their market potential."

Mesa is a full-featured, 32-bit spreadsheet offering huge, three dimensional
workbooks. The application also provides unlimited undo/redo and
multi-threaded recalculation. Mesa includes many unique usability features
including SmartFill<TM>, Formula Inheritance<TM> and drag and drop color and
fonts. Mesa also supports real-time data feeds from a variety of sources
including financial markets.

Mesa DOK has the same core set of 32-bit spreadsheet objects as the Mesa
application, enabling Mesa DOK users to embed the functionality of a powerful
spreadsheet within their own custom applications. Mesa DOK is being shown
publicly for the first time at COMDEX and will be available for download from
the Internet next week as a preview version of the software.

Athena Design has been delevering object based spreadsheets since 1992. Using
these core objects has provided faster time to market and an accelerated
release schedule for product enhancements. Athena produces award winning
spreadsheet software for both OS/2 and NEXTSTEP and was the first spreadsheet
provider to offer a spreadsheet object library to application developers.
Athena Design expects to release Mesa DOK in the first quarter of 1996.
