OS/2 Family - Now the Best Performing Intel Platforms for Java
With the November delivery of its fifth Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in just
over a year, IBM further establishes OS/2 as a foundation for e-business
while making it the best performing Intel platform for Java applications.
This fully compliant version of Sun Microsystems 1.1.4 release of the Java
Development Kit (JDK) is a downloadable feature from the IBM Software Choice
catalog of products available for OS/2 Warp 4, OS/2 Warp Server, OS/2 Warp
Server SMP and WorkSpace On-Demand.
As part of a commitment to deliver premiere Java platforms, IBM has
implemented the complete set of service fixes from JavaSoft and tuned both
the virtual machine and supporting operating system elements. CaffeineMark
3.0 benchmark results indicate Java applications run 7% faster on OS/2 Warp
than on Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT. Performance
comparisons between the OS/2 versions Java 1.1.4 and Java 1.1.1 showed a 50%
overall improvement.
The OS/2 team supporting Java continues to gain industry recognition.
JavaSoft has implemented several IBM innovations in Java. And the OS/2
release of Java 1.1.4, even with extensive and rigorous testing, is the first
implementation delivered after Sun Microsystems' release of the Java 1.1.4
reference platforms.
Java 1.1.4 for OS/2 Warp comprises:
* Java Runtime, including Internationalization Support and the Just In Time
(JIT) compiler;
* Java Development Kit (JDK) including Java class libraries, an applet viewer
and documentation generator;
* Toolkit Documentation;
* Sample Java Code;
* Times New Roman MT 30 Unicode Font;, and
* Interactive Code Analysis Tool (ICAT) Debugger for OS/2 Java.
IBM's 1.1.4 OS/2 release includes fixes to the development kit, the ICAT and
the JIT compiler. The performance improvements came from adjustments to the
JIT compiler, memory allocation, and garbage collection as well as graphics
and windowing components. OS/2 Warp users may see additional performance
improvements by applying FixPak 5, now available through the support tab on
the OS/2 Warp Family page.

Torsten Busse, November 17, 1997
The International Standards Organization (ISO) agreed to allow Sun
Microsystems' JavaSoft division submit the Java language, the Java Virtual
Machine and the Java Class library specification to be approved as an
internationally recognized standard. Although JavaSoft will guide Java
through the approval program, president Alan Baratz said it will remain an
"open process" focused on maintaining Java's strength as a "write-once,
run-anywhere" technology.
Of the 24 voting countries 20 voted for, two abstained and two, one of which
was the United States, voted against approval.
