hello --
I've just put vile 7.2 up for FTP at the usual place:
ftp://ftp.clark.net/pub/dickey/vile/vile-7.2.tgz
and it should be mirrored soon at
ftp://id.wing.net/pub/pgf/vile/vile-7.2.tgz
the PC binaries will appear soon, time permitting. (I've built the OS/2
binary; other people have been building the DOS & WinNT binaries).
vile is a text editor which is extremely compatible with vi in terms of
"finger feel". in addition, it has extended capabilities in many areas,
notably multi-file editing and viewing, key rebinding, and real X window
system support.
Highlights since 7.1:
+ lots of bug fixes, of course
+ new feature, 'majormode' allows you to customize vile for different file
types. This release implements the basic hierarchy of major- and
submodes, as well as modifications (including a new mode,
comment-prefix) to text formatting to exploit this feature.
see modes.doc for details
+ add tagignorecase mode, which causes tag searches to be done ignoring
case.
+ add %B substitution for error-buffer regular expressions to allow using
[Standard Input] and other scratch buffers as error buffers.
+ modify fopen-for-write calls on VMS to add "0" argument, which makes the
new file get the user's default protection.
+ modify xvile menus to allow arbitrary command line rather than bound
functions.
+ modify VMS terminal driver, vmsvt.c, to work when invoked from a
command-file, i.e., get terminal characteristics from SYS$COMMAND rather
than SYS$INPUT.
+ remove size-limit on mapped strings.
+ add $ncolors variable to allow run-time modification of the meaning of
colors (e.g., white vs brightwhite).
+ modify termcap and IBM terminal drivers to support 16 colors.
