Overview
WorkSpace On-Demand is an economical software alternative to extend the use of
your current PC investment while potentially lowering your total cost of
ownership.
WorkSpace On-Demand bridges the evolution to network computing for customers
who want to realize the benefits of centralized server-managed clients without
losing the flexibility and power offered by traditional PCs. Users can access
both intranet/Internet applications and information and conventional
client/server and in-house software.
The IBM WorkSpace On-Demand client extends access to network applications, the
intranet, and the Internet using your current PC hardware and server software
infrastructure while centralizing installation and management costs at the
server.
Your up-front expenses to install clients may be reduced, and your ongoing
costs to maintain client applications, manage upgrades, and provide end-user
support may be significantly lessened.
End-users and administrators benefit from improved software management and
maintenance without losing the benefits of a full PC -- the performance gains
of a local Intel (R)-compatible x86 processor, optional local disk access for
swapping and caching, support for multiple protocols and languages, and legacy
application compatibility.
The WorkSpace On-Demand product consists of two components:
WorkSpace On-Demand is the client operating system and software that runs
on the Intel-compatible network client hardware.
WorkSpace On-Demand Manager is the set of server-side utilities that are
used to install, configure, and maintain the network client.
Intended Customers
Customers interested in moving to network computing while preserving their
investment in legacy applications and large enterprise customers utilizing one
or more of the following:
Client/server
RIPL technologies
OS/2 (R) servers
DOS, Windows (R) 3.x, and/or OS/2 clients
Key Prerequisites
WorkSpace On-Demand
Client image runs on Intel-compatible hardware that supports the
appropriate language version of OS/2 Warp 4
WorkSpace On-Demand Manager
Can be installed on any hardware that supports the appropriate language
version of OS/2 Warp Server, Version 4, OS/2 Warp Server Advanced,
Version 4, or OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 with SMP Feature --
one of which must be installed on the server.

DESCRIPTION
The WorkSpace On-Demand product consists of two components -- WorkSpace
On-Demand and WorkSpace On-Demand Manager -- offering the following features:
Broad application support
Windows 3.x, DOS, 3270, 5250, Java, and OS/2 applications support
32-bit Windows 95 and Windows NT (TM) application support (via
separately purchased third-party software)
Mission-critical, line of business application support
Intel-compatible hardware support
Mainframe/host connectivity
Support for multiple protocols (including TCP/IP)
Centralized software administration and control
Remote boot of clients from the WorkSpace On-Demand Manager
Pre-set configuration files for selected PC models
Improved remote boot hardware support
Application download from the server
User data stored at the server
Application access from client systems via a user password
In this network computer configuration, the client operating system does not
reside on the local disk of the network computer -- in fact, some network
computers may not even have a local disk. Rather, all the software, including
the operating system, is obtained from the server. When the WorkSpace
On-Demand hardware is turned on, it boots from the network and loads the
software from the server.
The WorkSpace On-Demand operating environment includes enhancements to limit
end-user access to the WorkSpace On-Demand system disk and configuration
files. A local hard disk is optional on the WorkSpace On-Demand client
workstation and, if available, will be used only for swapping. In addition, a
simplified shell with a logon screen is provided to reduce end-user training
costs and improve manageability. The WorkSpace On-Demand client provides the
ability to run legacy DOS, Windows 3.1, and OS/2 applications while
simultaneously supporting Java 1.02, Netscape Navigator 2.02, and the Personal
Communications 3270/5250 Emulation Program's host access application.
Additional applications available to the end-user via the shell can be
configured by the WorkSpace On-Demand Manager system administrator.
The WorkSpace On-Demand Manager utilities for the WorkSpace On-Demand client
provide the ability to install the client software on the server, configure
clients, and administer users and applications for the network clients. The
roaming feature of WorkSpace On-Demand allows end users to log on to different
client systems, which are attached to the WorkSpace On-Demand Manager as long
as they are of like hardware configuration.

PRODUCT POSITIONING
For customers who want to migrate to network computing while potentially
reducing their operational expense and protecting their investments, the IBM
WorkSpace On-Demand is the solution. WorkSpace On-Demand is the IBM network
computing solution that addresses the range of emerging Intel-compatible
hardware environments including "managed PCs" and "thin clients".
WorkSpace On-Demand helps reduce software administration, management, and
training costs while enhancing system reliability and availability and
leverages efficient use of critical IS skills.
WorkSpace On-Demand provides customers a transition path from a traditional
client/server model to a network computing environment optimized for 100% Pure
Java, the Internet, and corporate intranets.
WorkSpace On-Demand complements the existing OS/2 product line while taking
advantage of the proven technology of OS/2. WorkSpace On-Demand, OS/2 Warp 4
clients, legacy clients, IBM Network Station -- all can coexist on the same
network.
