File Hound for OS/2, 0.2a Beta is now available. For those of you who have
not heard of it, File Hound is a document indexing and retrieval system
capable of rapidly searching hundreds or thousands of documents using various
search criteria. Unlike the "Seek and Scan" and "Find" applets included with
the operating system, File Hound builds an index of significant terms in
documents, allowing it to scan thousands of documents within a couple seconds.
This version includes a number of fixes, as well as some features requested by
users. These include:
- You may now save the window positions and sizes so that they are displayed
where you want them on your Desktop.
- The internal text viewer may be replaced by an external viewer/editor (such
as HyperView PM).
- WordPerfect filter support (5.x-6.0). Other supported document types are
Ami Pro, HTML, Microsoft Word prior to 6.0, and ASCII text. Even if your
word processor is not included in this list, File Hound should be able to
extract text if it is stored as ASCII. For instance, Microsoft Word does
this, while Lotus WordPro is binary and therefore not readable.
Bugs fixed:
- Index View could not read FAT drives
- indexing hash bug, which increased number of false hits
- proximity search did not work
- index reporting from remote server did not work
- program sometimes crashed while handling Zip archives
- program sometimes crashed while displaying Word 6.0 docs
