---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have just finished porting Lynx 2.7.1 to OS/2. This is a straight port of
the Unix/VMS release version 2.7.1 of Lynx. Lynx is a full-featured text-mode
WWW browser.

Lynx 2.7.1 does not replace Lynx/2; the two are substantially different
programs. Lynx/2 is based on an older version of Lynx (2.4.1), but has a
significant body of added features relative to mainstream Lynx 2.4.1,
including table support, some frames support, user-defined colors, and support
for Java applets. I ported Lynx 2.7.1 to OS/2 largely because of the
divergence between "mainstream" Lynx development and Lynx/2. Hardcore OS/2
Lynxers will want to have both programs. A table summarizes the differences
between the two packages:

Feature Lynx/2 Lynx 2.7.1
------------------------------------------------------------------
Support for tables yes some
Support for frames some some
HTML 3.0/3.2 tags no yes
User-defined colors yes no*
Java applet support yes no
Works under XFree86 no yes
Source code GPL'ed no yes
Cookies supported no optional

(* unless you know something about terminfo!)

Lynx 2.7.1 also has lots of new configurable options relating to such things
as HTML comment handling and how inline images are displayed. Lynx 2.7.1 for
OS/2 can be run in a Full-screen session, a VIO window, or an xterm under
XFree86-OS/2.

Lynx 2.7.1 for OS/2 (binaries and source patches) can be found at the
following places:

ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/os2lynx271.zip
    hopefully soon to be
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/internet/www/browser/os2lynx271.zip
    and
http://studentweb.tulane.edu/~jmcbray/lynx/

which also has a copy of the README file and links to other Lynx resources.

This release of Lynx 2.7.1 for OS/2 is based on stable Lynx code, but is still
a little buggy or odd in some ways, none of which should interfere with normal
use. The bugs or limitations I know about are mentioned in the included
README file. I welcome comments and suggestions, particularly from anyone who
knows something about setting screen colors in terminfo :) I will be merging
in any fixes anyone sends me or that I come up with on my own and re-releasing
the Lynx 2.7.1 towards the end of the summer; if I don't respond to your
e-mail it doesn't mean I'm ignoring you, just that I'll get to it later.
