The international DES Coordinated Effort in Sweden just released its new OS/2
client. It's available in a EMX and standalone version. The DES Cracking
Challenge is about cracking the DES encryption code, to show the current
security is not enough. The cracker wins $10.000. Look on the DES site for
more info about THAT.
This client for the DES Crack Challenge is available for users in ALL
countries, it's not limited by the US export limitations. There's a
performance list on platform on the site, and we DON'T want to be last, do we?

Join the Non-US DES-Challenge with a client for OS/2.
Due to US-Export restrictions, OS/2-Users outside of the US or Canada are not
allowed to participate in the US-Effort already mentioned in c.o.o.a
Now all OS/2-Users _worldwide_ can join an other campaign to crack DES.

As has been pointed out, there is a US group trying to crack DES and all
US/Canadian citizens are encouraged to join this group (see
http://www.frii.com/~rcv/deschall.htm for further info).
Those who do not reside in the US/Canada are not allowed to participate in
this challenge since the US does not allow the exporting of encryption
software and it is not clear if this code cracking software is prosecutable.
So, there is now an international effort at http://www.des.sollentuna.se/
which now has an OS/2 client available for those outside the US and Canada.
Both clients run quietly in the background and use only the excess CPU
cycles that we would normally waste.
Please be aware that the new client in the international effort is
significantly slower than the US/Canada effort (it cracks keys at about 3/5
the speed of the US clients). So, if you reside in the US, please use the
first URL and if you do not, please use the second. FWIW, the international
client reports the platform being used and the percentage of the work done
by each platform is reported at
http://www.des.sollentuna.se/stat/platforms.html. The OS/2 level is quite
low now due to the recent availability of the client but it should rise
quickly.
