---------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm currently receiving a large proportion of problem submissions. The 50/50
USENET SPAM to real submissions ratio, isn't something I can lessen with an
administrivia posting... but perhaps the following will help with the
remainder.
0) I've had to reject some otherwise mostly acceptable postings, because I got
email bounces, and I was unable to determine how to fix the from or reply
addresses. If you do not get a "COOA ACK" email or don't see your submission
in the COOA group after several days, let me know. My mail to you may have
bounced or my mailer reported it as bounced.
Other posts are on hold, because I haven't received replies to my queries or
requests for modifications (matters of excessive length, inadequate
descriptions, or similar). If my queries are unclear, or you disagree with
my judgements let me know. Those making submissions have every right to
dispute any of my suggestions they dislike.
My goals in these queries is to help the author create a more interesting and
informative post which I feel helps both poster and reader.
1) Posts which are PRIMARILY jobs offered, jobs sought, questions, opinions,
comments, , or attacks on other persons, products, companies are generally not
"On Topic."
2) Posts which are "on topic" generally require an explicit mention of OS/2.
Appropriate categories for submissions include: news, pointers to resources,
announcements, pointers to long FAQs lists, short FAQs lists, or other
primarily "factual" sorts of materials.
Submissions which provide pointers to sites which are OS/2 related but are
focused on discussion, reviews, opinions, etc. may be on topic.
3) Submissions should include descriptions, and the subject line in your mailer
or newsreader should use a descriptive subject line and include an appropriate
keyword in caps preceding the remainder of the subject.
I forget which ISV makes what products on occasion, and I have a good memory
and I see all the posts in this newsgroup. Your announcement should assume the
reader has no idea who you are or what your product does.
4) Include the FILENAME in your submissions involving programs or other file
based resources announced. It can be very difficult for people to find a file
on a large FTP site without the filename and directory information.
5) Users group submissions should include a subject line similar to the
following for meeting or event announcements:
UG: city, country - group/event description - date(s)
6) Please send plain ASCII, no bullets, no fancy quotes and dashes. These get
transformed into MIME entities that make ugly displays on some browsers
"=06" "Bj=f7rn" etc.
=======
II. I am preparing a straw poll. I'd appreciate some suggestions about policy
issues of appropriate posts for this newsgroup before I present it formally.
III. I am preparing announcement about the SPAM issue. Stay tuned.
