IBM Establishes OS/2 Warp Business Unit to Develop Network Computing
Applications for Customers
New Business Unit Hosts Customer Summit Offering, Network Computing and
Java Solutions
AUSTIN, TX, January 8, 1997 . . . In a concerted effort to help OS/2* Warp
customers design and implement network computing solutions, IBM today
announced the formation of the Network Computing Projects business unit. The
organization will work with OS/2 Warp customers to design and develop custom,
mission-critical, business applications based on Network Computing
technologies such as Lotus Domino** for OS/2 Warp, Sun Microsystems,*** Inc.'s
Java***, IBM's VisualAge* and other related products.
In addition, the unit is hosting the first in a series of Java Customer Summit
conferences from Jan. 8-10, at IBM's facilities in Austin, Texas. These
conferences are being held worldwide to help educate and train corporate
application developers and IT executives as they prepare to design and develop
network computing applications that will run on OS/2 Warp.
The formation of the Network Computing Projects business unit and the
sponsoring of the Java Customer Summit supports IBM's corporate-wide network
computing strategy and will help accelerate the development of web-enabled
applications that support the 100% Pure Java initiative. The unit is already
seeing tremendous demand for its services from both public and private sector
enterprises.
"Enterprises worldwide are quickly learning to appreciate the tremendous value
of network computing solutions based on cross-platform standards, such as
Java," said John Soyring, director worldwide technical projects for IBM's
Personal Software Products division. "The demand for our custom application
design and development services is growing rapidly We are recruiting and
training Java application developers in order to satisfy these enterprise
customer needs."
IBM developers are already working with companies around the globe to help
define, design and develop custom applications, as well as convert existing
client/server applications to network computing solutions. The teams aim to
complete projects within one Web year, allowing companies to put new
applications into production within 90 days. Enterprises currently working
with this new group come from a variety of industries, such as retail,
banking, insurance, transportation, utilities, and government agencies.
"It is amazing how quickly IBM recognized the needs of the OS/2 installed
base, and even more impressive that they have already assembled a team of
experts to start building custom applications that work on the Java
cross-platform solution," said Tim Sloane, director, Aberdeen Group. "Equally
impressive is IBM's recent commitment to developing Java applications for
customers allowing applications to run on OS/2 Warp and other Java-compliant
operating systems."
Java Customer Summit
In addition to education and training, customers attending the conference will
learn IBM's plans for the large set of network computing technologies that are
being developed in the industry and how these technologies can be used to
build industrial-strength applications for networked environments. The
conference will include Java application development technologies from IBM,
Lotus and JavaSoft***, a business unit of Sun Microsystem's, Inc.
Java for OS/2 Warp
OS/2 Warp 4 is the first PC operating system solution to incorporate Java
technology allowing users to run Java applets and Java applications
independent of a Web browser. OS/2 Warp 4 includes the code necessary for
running Java applications, a Java developers toolkit, and Java applet samples.
In addition, IBM plans to roll-out OS/2 Warp version 3 and OS/2 Warp Connect
support for Java v1.0.2 in early 1997.
