This is to remind you of a military grade programming language that will allow
you to develop safety and mission critical applications both for Java and OS/2
and maintain source compatibility. It can also significantly improve the
safety and reliability of your CGI programs.

The language is Ada 95. It has been significantly improved in the areas of
object oriented programming, numerical routines, string handling,
multithreaded programming and interfacing to C, Fortran and COBOL. You cannot
get a better programming language for real time use. Ada is the only ISO
standard object oriented programming language.

If Ada is so good, why don't more people use it? Well a lot of people who use
it actually view it as a competitive advantage. They are not exactly anxious
for their competitors to catch on. Most students today learn only (Pascal and)
C++ and they tend to assume that since that is what they know that must be the
best programming language. They are shocked that someone prefers a programming
language like COBOL over C++. Real world people prefer working COBOL programs
over bugridden C++ programs.

The premier Ada sites are
   http://www.adahome.com, http://sw-eng.falls-church.va.us/AdaIC/ and
   http://www.acm.org/sigada/ .

Those who still believe that Ada is an overly complex programming language
should browse the web sites. Hint: Ada language design is conducted more like
a war than anything else. The chief designer is the supreme commander. That is
why Ada ISO standardisation was so rapid.

Programmers who are interested in programming in Ada should consider buying or
borrowing the following books: John Barnes "Programming in Ada 95" or Norman
H. Cohen "Ada as a second language 2.nd ed". For Advanced programming you
should consider Alan Burns & Andy Wellings "Concurrency in Ada".

The GNU Ada 95 compiler for OS/2 (EMX) can be downloaded from
ftp://cs.nyu.edu/pub/gnat . Current version for OS/2 is 3.05. Version 3.09 is
under development. For thin OS/2 bindings look into the contrib directory. For
more download sites look at http://www.gnat.com .

For Ada compilers that generate Java code you'll have to forego OS/2 and
contact vendors like Intermetrics or Aonix. These compilers are available for
Windows 95 and various Unixes. Intermetrics have said that they need around
500 customers if their AppletMagic compiler is worth porting to OS/2.

For small tidbits about Ada have a look at
   http://www.acm.org/sigada/news/news.html
