Creating GTAK/GTAR disaster recovery disks for OS/2 WARP v4

===========================================================================
This procedure will leave you with a set of disks that will let you restore
your system from scratch, when you have a tape back up made by GTAK/GTAR 2.51.

You will need 4 or 5 floppies depending on whether you place the GTAK/GTAR
files on the last OS/2 disk, or on a separate disk.

#1 In the system setup folder use 'Create Utility Diskettes'. This will make
4 disks labeled 0 (which I will refer to as Boot) - 3.

#2 Copy the GTAK SCSITAPE.DMD to Utility Disk 1

#3 Copy OS2SCSI.DMD and OS2ASPI.DMD to Utility Disk 1. They are located in
    \OS2\BOOT\ on your hard drive.

#3 Copy the GTAK SCSITAPE.SYS and ASPITAPE.SYS to Utility Disk 2

#4 Copy the following files to either Utility Disk 3 or a separate floppy.
Also copy any scripts, lists of settings, and notes you MAY need. Make
sure to keep a record of the tar and tape blocksizes.

    TAR.EXE
SCSITAPE.EXE (Once on the disk I renamed this to TAPE.EXE)
    RMT_SCSI.DLL
    NLS.DLL **

NLS.DLL is already present on Utility Disk 3. If you place the files on a
different disk, copy it from Utility Disk 3 to that disk.

#5 Now you must edit the CONFIG.SYS file on Utility Disk 1. I recommend you
include all of the device drivers, and just rem out the ones you don't
PLAN to use, so they are already setup IN CASE you do need them.
    (example CONFIG.SYS below)

#5a Add the device drivers and basedev statements as required by GTAK
#5b Add the TZ= and TAPE= SET statements. Make sure you add them
before the line "set os2_shell=cmd.exe" or they will not show up!
#5c Add 'A:\' to the PATH, DPATH, and LIBPATH
#5d Optionally rem out any basedev's you do not plan on using. This will
        decrease the boot up time.

NOTE: I have done this under the pretense that I will have a DOS Boot Disk
and editor that will allow me to edit the CONFIG.SYS on this disk in the
event that I need one of those remed out basedevs to be present! If you
don't mind waiting an extra minute for boot, leave them be.

That's it!! You are ready to cook! Be sure to TEST IT before you need it.
Trust me... forgetting that one setting you didn't write down, or that one
file you forgot to put on a floppy will put right into a world of shit when a
crash happens. Been there several times. It ain't fun.

Besides GTAK/GTAR these disk will contain just about everything you could need
to get rolling again.

CHKDSK, FORMAT (HPFS capable), and FDISK are on Utility Disk 3.
SYSINSTX.COM is on the Utility Boot Disk (Disk 0)

It would also be a good idea to keep some essentials, such as UNZIP on a
floppy.

One last piece of advice: Write down your drive and partition geometry! OS/2
FDISK gives a rough display in MB. Linux FDISK will give you a better display
of exact blocks and sectors. You will NEED to have this info if you ever have
to repartition and don't want to lose any data.

I've already had a low level disk util wipe out my boot sectors twice!! If
this happens when you reboot if you see ANY partitions you will be lucky. Boot
sectors can be replaced by hand, but it is not fun. Though you will need
SYSINSTX.COM to rebuild the sector on an OS/2 bootable drive, you can still
use a normal boot sector to allow you to access (but not boot from!) that
partition and back-up data in case of an emergency.

It would be wise to use the UNIX program 'dd' to back up all of you boot
sectors. "dd if=/dev/sdaX of=sdaX.boot count=1" for each partition will do it.
Unfortunately, as of this writing the v3.13 OS/2 port of dd does not property
work with logical drives (partitions)

Whatever you don't format the drives!

===========================================================================
Sample CONFIG.SYS.
It has been formatted with the program csort. The virgin CONFIG.SYS on Utility
Disk 1 will not look so pretty. If you remove the rems from all of the
basedevs, this CONFIG.SYS should work for anyone. (Minus the GTAK tape settings
of course)
