-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PMsndX version 2.05 is now available. I have placed it in
/incoming/pmsx205.zip of ftp-os2.nmsu.edu and ftp.cdrom.com but
it will move to os2/mmedia after it has been processed. This
version contains a very important bug fix. I didn't receive
any reports of problems, but found this one by accident and
couldn't believe people didn't experience problems. It caused
the program to crash sometimes during initialization of the
editor window.
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to pass them
on to me at wishware@cais.com. I am always striving to make
this program better, so I welcome any feedback that I get.

What does PMsndX do? Well, it does a whole lot. Just about
anything I could think of for digital audio is in the program.
It is actually two programs which are aimed at different
users.
The first is EdSndX.EXE and is the primary tool for editing
audio files of many different formats including Sun, WAV, VOC,
MAC, IRCAM, and all the raw formats. It has a full suite of
DSP tools for adding special effects or modifing the data
to meet certain needs like resampling or normalizing. The
editor is the center of the tool and it provides a MDI interface
so that you can cut and paste data either to the clipboard or
between multiple files that are open. The editor also can
play back samples through an integrated MMPM/2 interface. The
display and manipulation of the data is fully tailorable to your
desires and I had a beta team of about 20 users helping me
discover the needs of a broad range of users.
The second tool is PlSndX.EXE and is the primary tool for
playing sound files. This program is unique in that it
can load any of the formats that EdSndX can edit, but it
also has special features to make it easy to play sounds
directly from the command line. It can play and then exit
or play, and then wait for the user to kill it. It also
has the capability to pipe between multiple instances such
that there is no contention for the hardware. In this
mode of operation, when you open a copy of PlSndX, any
other copies just pipe the file name to the first one and
then exit. This saves resources and allows for queueing
of sounds. It then builds upon this feature by providing
the ability to double buffer sounds so that while it is
playing one sound, it can be loading and converting another
sound. Have you ever downloaded a .au file and found that
it will not play with wepm or ab.exe? This is normally because
the file is sampled at 8kHz which the normal players have
problems with. PlSndX solves this problem by automatically
adjusting the rate to a multiple of 11025 which makes most
sound cards very happy. This adjustment is done with the
DSP tools and is very accurate in its interpolation during
the resampling process.
All of these tools are integrated into the WPS environment
and support Drag/Drop as well as integrated online help.
