IBM, Sun Expand Relationship to Deliver Java Solutions IBM to License
JavaOS**, HotJava**
SOMERS, N.Y., and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 6, 1996 ... IBM and Sun
Microsystems, Inc.'s JavaSoft business unit today announced an expanded
relationship for delivering Java** technology for business users and support
programs for software developers. These initiatives will help extend the value
of Java to enterprises that are increasingly adopting it as a core part of
their Internet and network computing strategies.
Today's announcements add to the momentum that is rapidly building around
Java. Developed by Sun Microsystems, Inc., the Java platform holds tremendous
appeal to developers who see it as an efficient and cost-effective technology
for network-enabling their business applications.
Specifics of this enhanced collaboration are:
o IBM is licensing Sun's JavaOS** and HotJava*. The JavaOS is a light-weight
operating environment ideal for network computers and other "thin client"
systems that offer low-cost access to Internet and network resources.
HotJava provides building blocks that can be used to develop customizable,
network-aware applications.
o IBM will create the industry's first Java Validation Centers at its porting
centers in San Mateo, Calif., and Waltham, Mass. In these centers, software
developers will be able to test Java applets and applications on systems
from Sun, Hewlett Packard, IBM and others at no charge.
"These initiatives are further evidence of IBM's commitment to invest in Java
technology and support programs to help our customers and developers make a
smooth transition to the benefits of network computing," said Patricia Sueltz,
vice president of Internet software, IBM Internet Division. "We are very
pleased to work with JavaSoft and other industry partners to expand the range
of tools, technologies and application software that will make Java real for
business."
"IBM's commitment to Java technologies has a significant impact on Java
enterprise application development," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president of
software products at JavaSoft. "As the world's largest software company and a
dominant provider of enterprise-wide computing solutions, IBM is a crucial
ally in helping Sun establish Java as the de facto platform for network
computing. We welcome IBM's involvement and look forward to working with them
to deliver products and services for the rapidly-growing community of serious
Java developers."
JavaOS, Hot Java Licensing JavaOS, developed by Sun, is a highly compact
operating system, designed to run Java applications directly on
microprocessors in anything from net computers to cell phones. A dynamically
extensible operating environment, JavaOS brings the design advantages of the
Java platform to an operating system.
As part of its ongoing network computing strategy, IBM intends to offer JavaOS
as an option for future network computers.
HotJava is a set of building blocks for building network-aware applications.
Using these building blocks, a developer can write a modifiable, extensible
user environment -- a personalized workspace for accessing Java applets and
applications. IBM is evaluating HotJava for use in future offerings.
Java Validation Centers
-----------------------
IBM is expanding the services available at its U.S. porting facilities, called
Solution Partnership Centers, to include Java validation. IBM will offer
access to IBM and other systems to which the Java Virtual Machine** has been
ported to help independent solution providers test their applications. The
systems can be accessed either on-site at the two centers or remotely through
the Internet with firewall protection at no charge to developers.
To contact the Solution Partnership Centers, developers in the U.S. can call
800-678-4249. The direct number for the San Mateo facility is (415)-312-0240,
and for the Waltham facility, (617) 895-2610. Inquiries can also be sent to
