, healthier, more successful lives, she said, and the act of
positive thinking can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. "If you think you're
more likely to get promoted, you're more likely to put in more
effort and work long hours," Sharot said. But this slightly distorted view
of the world can also be a weakness a person might continue
to smoke because they don't expect to get lung cancer, for example.
Being more realistic is important in some cases, Sharot cautioned.Physical
realityPhysicists look beyond the human mind for external reality, but even
that reality isn't absolute truth. Fundamental reality as scientists understand
it is based on quantum mechanics, a realm where all manner of
strange things occur. An electron can behave as either a particle or
a wave, depending on how one measures it. And scientists can measure
either a particle's position or its momentum at any given time, but
never both."Quantum mechanics is simply the best theory we've ever developed,"
theoretical physicist David Tong, of Cambridge University, says in the show.
But so much of this reality is by definition unknowable. Another physicist
featured in the show, Steven Nahn of MIT, says "I absolutely believe
reality is a real thing, but that does not mean we understand
it." Nahn was part of the team of scientists who found evidence
in 2012 for the Higgs boson, the particle that gives other particles
their mass. The universe may turn out to have more dimensions than

is much simpler."It's silliness; it's just people having fun," Hughes said. Some
friends call themselves the Unicorn Army on Instagram -- another web-based
photo sharing site -- and try to find unusual places to get
pictures of someone wearing the unicorn head, Hughes said.Dimas and Hughes
went to the game with tickets the strip club gave them and
took the unicorn mask because they "thought it would be funny to
take the picture of thousands of people with one random unicorn head
in there."That's when a stadium camera operator saw Dimas and motioned for
her to stand up so she could be shown on the stadium's
video scoreboard, but Dimas took it one step further and started dancing
in the aisle. When an usher asked her to sit down, Dimas
didn't -- but only because Hughes said it's hard to hear and
see while wearing the unicorn head -- so Dimas and Hughes were
asked to leave, Hughes said. The sergeant who posed for the picture was
one of several people in the ballpark security office."There was a bunch
of people there, other security officers, too, and they just thought it
was fun," Hughes said. "I think he was just being nice. There
were other officers and people in the room and they were, like,
`Put it on' and he's, like, `I'll do it."'Public safety director Michael
Huss said the sergeant may be disciplined because, "This is someone that
is a supervisor, that we look up to to lead other officers.
It's not the example we're looking fo

corps that Thomas was engaged to Douglas Cornell, chief White House correspondent
for UPI's archival, The Associated Press. They were married in 1971. Cornell
died 11 years later.Thomas stayed with UPI for 57 years, until 2000,
when the company was purchased by News World Communications, which was founded
by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church. At age
79, Thomas was soon hired as a Washington-based columnist for newspaper
publisher Hearst Corp.A self-described liberal, Thomas made no secret of
her ill feelings for the second President Bush. "He is the worst
president in all of American history," she told the Daily Breeze of
Torrance, Calif.Thomas also was critical of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq,
asserting that the deaths of innocent people should hang heavily on Bush's
conscience."We are involved in a war that is becoming more dubious every
day," she said in a speech to thousands of students at Brigham
Young University in September 2003. "I thought it was wrong to invade
a country without any provocation."Some students walked out of the lecture.
She won over others with humorous stories from her "ringside seat" to
history. In March 2005, she confronted Bush with the proposition that "your
decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans
and Iraqis" and every justification for
IDYLLWILD, Calif. Firefighters in Southern California aided by heavy rain
in the mountains above Palm Springs were starting to turn the tide
Sunday on a stubborn wildfire that has burned across more than 40
square miles, destroyed a handful of homes and forced the evacuation of
thousands of people. An inch and a half of rain was measured Sunday
morning at the aerial tramway near Palm Springs, with more rainfall expected
throughout the day. The moisture helped slow the fire's progress."With diminished
fire activity, firefighters made great progress with line construction,
particularly along the east side towards Palm Springs," said U.S. Forest
Service spokesman John Miller. With the blaze almost half contained, authorities
were able to lift evacuation orders for several communities. The fire was
still far from extinguished, however. The thunderstorm helping douse the
flames could also bring lightning, wind and flooding, said Miller, all hazardous
conditions for fire crews. The mountain wildfire began last Monday and has
burned across about 42 square miles. It has destroyed 23 structures, including
seven homes. The fire was less than two miles from Idyllwild on its
western flank. It was a similar distance from Palm Springs below on
the desert floor, where an enormous plume of smoke could be seen.Authorities
have said the fire was human-caused, but wouldn't say whether it was
accidental or intentional. There have been no reports of injuries.More
