CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa After fleeing to Israel following an immigration raid
in 2008, a former manager at a kosher slaughterhouse in Iowa finally
appeared in a U.S. courtroom Friday to face charges that he conspired
to exploit immigrant workers for profit.His hands and feet shackled, Hosam
Amara walked slowly into the federal courtroom in Cedar Rapids. Bald, short
and stocky, the 48-year-old former poultry production manager at the Agriprocessors
plant in Postville wore an orange jailhouse jumpsuit and a stone-faced demeanor.Amara
pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with conspiring to harbor
workers who were in the country illegally and conspiring to provide false
immigration papers at what was the nation's largest kosher slaughterhouse.
He faces 25 counts related to harboring and two counts related to
document fraud.Amara was ordered jailed pending a trial scheduled for July
1 after assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Deegan said the government considered
him a flight risk.The brief arraignment was a routine hearing, but was
a long time in the making.Prosecutors say Amara fled to Israel, where
he has citizenship, with his family shortly after federal agents descended
on Agriprocessors in May 2008, arresting 389 workers in what was the
largest immigration raid at the time. He was indicted six months later
and became a fugitive from justice when he could not be found

The U.S. Forest Service is in the business of preventing fires,
not starting them.Yet the agency set off alarms in Congress and state
capitols across the West by citing the automatic spending cuts as the
basis for demanding that dozens of states return $17.9 million in federal
subsidies. And it's all come down to a bureaucratic squabble over whether
the money is subject to so-called sequestration because of the year it
was paid -- 2013 -- as the Obama administration contends, or exempt
from the cuts because of the year it was generated -- 2012
-- as the states insist.Right now, it's a standoff heightened by history
and hard fiscal realities. But with taxpayer cash scarce, both sides are
digging in: The Forest Service has to slash 5 percent of its
budget under sequestration. The states, meanwhile, have depended for decades
on a share of revenue from timber cut on federal land. Perhaps
least willing to compromise are members of Congress who are up for
re-election next year and are loath to let go of money that
benefits potential voters back home.It's not clear who gets to decide or
whether the question ends up in court. But lines have been drawn."We

Supreme Court may have ruled ObamaCare is constitutional, but implementing
the controversial federal law would become a crime in South Carolina if
a bill passed by the state House becomes law.The bill, approved Wednesday
by a vote of 65-39, declares President Obama's signature legislation "null
and void." Whereas the law that Obama pushed and Congress passed is
known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, South Carolina's
law would be known as the Freedom of Health Care Protection Act.It
would prohibit state officials and employees from "enforcing or attempting
to enforce such unconstitutional laws" and "establish criminal penalties
and civil liability" for those who engage in activities that aid the
implementation of ObamaCare.The Supreme Court ruled last year that ObamaCare's
underlying provision, requiring all Americans to obtain health insurance,
is constitutional, though lawsuits still are pending that argue against
