I know how much is done at the very last minute, but
this interior seemed far from complete -- no carpet, exposed ceiling ducts,
few finished surfaces, holes with wires dangling everywhere, scribbling
(in Italian) all over the unpainted walls, and fixtures still sitting on
pallets. But we accompanied by the ships designers; Teresa Anderson (from
Princess) and Giacomo Mortola (a Genoa-based independent) using renderings
and blueprints as visual aids to their narrative.Royal Princess First SightsThe
good news is the elevator is working, said our leader, Rai Calouri,
Princess' executive vice president of fleet operations. We rode up to deck
14 and walked forward to the navigation bridge. When finished, this bridge
will resemble that of the Starship Enterprise, but we only saw dozens
of technicians reading blueprints and manuals, ready to connect computer
screens, steering mechanisms, and control panels for fire doors and smoke
detectors. The captains chair and wheel were dead center, elevated for a
better view. Behind us was a safe-room style situation center with redundant
navigation systems and surveillance monitors -- ready for lockdown.Beyond
the BridgeCruise ship bridges are fascinating, but our Star Trek reverie
was broken when Calouri reminded us that an entire ship awaited inspection.
We ascended two more stories to the Lido deck (deck 16), where
many of the best new Royal Princess features will appear. All Princess ships

May 8, 2012: Sen. Charles Schumer speaks to reporters following a weekly
strategy luncheon.APSen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday he's hoping for a bipartisan
deal by the end of this week on a sweeping immigration bill
to secure the border and allow eventual citizenship to the estimated 11
million people living here illegally."All of us have said that there will
be no agreement until the eight of us agree to a big,
specific bill, but hopefully we can get that done by the end
of the week," said Schumer, D-N.Y., who's leading efforts by eight senators
to craft the legislation. "That's what we're on track to do."Schumer spoke
on CBS' "Face the Nation" alongside Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., another leader
of the immigration talks, who suggested there could be a tough road
ahead for the contentious legislation."There will be a great deal of unhappiness
about this proposal because everybody didn't get what they wanted," McCain
said. "There are entrenched positions on both sides of this issue as
far as business and labor."A deal on immigration is a top second-term
priority for President Barack Obama, and his senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer
said Sunday that the bill being developed in the Senate is completely
consistent Obama's approach -- even though the Senate plan would tie border
security to a path to citizenship in a manner Obama administration officials
have criticized.Pfeiffer didn't answer directly when asked on "Fox News
Sunday" whether Obama woul

enrolled in community colleges and universities. That's one reason a record
63 percent of adults ages 25 to 29 have spent at least
some time in college, according to the Pew Research Center.Older Americans
are returning to school, too. Doug Damato, who lives in Asheville, N.C.,
lost his job as an installer at a utility company in February
2012. He stopped looking for work last fall, when he began taking
classes in mechanical engineering at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community
College.Next week, Damato, 40, will accept an academic award for earning
top grades. But one obstacle has emerged: Under a recent change in
state law, his unemployment benefits will now end July 1, six months
earlier than he expected. He's planning to work nights, if possible, to support
himself once the benefits run out. Dropping out of school is "out
of the question," he said, given the time he has already put
into the program."I don't want a handout," he says. "I'm trying to
better myself."Many older Americans who lost their jobs are finding refuge
in Social Security's disability program. Nearly 8.9 million Americans are
receiving disability checks, up 1.3 million from when the recession ended
in June 2009.Natasha Baebler's journey out of the labor force and onto
the disability rolls began when she lost her job serving disabled students
and staff members at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., in February
2012.For six mon
FILE: April 4, 2013: President Obama waves after his arrival at Buckley
Air Force Base, Colo.APA senior White House adviser on Sunday defended President
Obamas forthcoming budget by saying it wont be like the House Republican
proposal a rehash of the Romney plan that Americans have already
rejected. The American people rejected it, Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer said
on Fox News Sunday. And (Republicans) shouldnt be doubling down on it.The
president is scheduled to release a budget Wednesday that is expected to
include a mix of tax increases and cuts to such entitlements as
Social Security and Medicare. You can do both, Pfeiffer said. Thats what
youll see.Pfeiffer also told ABCs This Week that Obama will not enact
a Romney economic plan, which he said was essentially drastic cuts to
entitlement programs with tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. What we
wont do is cut our way to prosperity, he said.On Saturday, the
president said his budget was not his ideal plan, but it was
a compromise that he would be willing to accept.House Speaker John Boehner
said last week said the Obama budget blueprint holds reforms hostage to
tax increases.
