ies to collect sales taxes if the store has a physical
presence in the state. As a result, many online sales are essentially
tax-free, giving Internet retailers an advantage over brick-and-mortar stores. While
Republicans generally oppose higher taxes -- and agreed to an increase on
top earners as part of the fiscal crisis deal only after negotiating
a narrower hike than the administration originally envisioned -- supporters
of the Internet sales tax bill insist it is not a tax
increase.Instead, they say, the bill merely provides states with a mechanism
to enforce current taxes."This bill has nothing to do with imposing any
kind of new tax or revenue generator," said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn.
"What this law does is allow states that already have laws on
the books to carry out the implementation of those" laws."South Dakota Gov.
Dennis Daugaard, a Republican, called it a "matter of equity and fairness.""The
same people who are selling the same products should be paying the
same taxes," he said.Supporters say the bill is about fairness for businesses
and lost revenue for states. But opponents say it would impose complicated
regulations on retailers and doesn't have enough protections for small businesses.
Businesses with less than $1 million a year in online sales would
be exempt. While online giant Amazon has come around to the tax, major
online retailers like eBay are strongly opposing it.Many of the nation's
governors -- Republicans and De
The CIA had Tamerlan Tsarnaev's name put into a terror watchlist after
being contacted by Russian authorities in 2011, sources told Fox News --
raising more questions about why the Boston bomber's trip to Russia the
following year didn't raise more red flags.Sources say the Russians contacted
the FBI once in March 2011, and several months later they contacted
the CIA about Tsarnaev. In October 2011, the CIA sent information to many
federal agencies and to "the watchlisting system" about him, the sources
say. That step ultimately put him on the vast TIDE database of
people potentially tied to terrorism cases. The FBI has said previously that
it was told Tsarnaev was a "follower of radical Islam" and was
preparing to travel to a foreign country to join unspecified underground
groups. The FBI said that it responded by interviewing Tsarnaev and family
members, but found no terrorism activity. In early 2012, Tsarnaev would travel
to Russia for six months. The nature of that trip is still
unclear. Two top Republican senators are now calling for a Senate Homeland
Security Committee hearing on the Boston Marathon bombings, as lawmakers
question whether enough was done to prevent the attack.Sens. John McCain,
R-Ariz., and Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, requested the hearing Wednesday, saying
"it has become increasingly apparent that more questions need to be answered
regarding the failure to prevent this tragedy."The senators cited the reporting
by Fox News an

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau A military tribunal in Guinea-Bissau has convicted
an army captain of leading a failed coup last year.Pansau Ntchama was
sentenced on Thursday to serve five years in prison after being found
guilty of treason and using illegal weapons.Ntchama was the ex-bodyguard
of Guinea-Bissau's former army chief of staff.Authorities say he led gunmen
who attacked a military base near the airport in Bissau in October
2012. The army fought back and the coup failed.Troubled Guinea-Bissau has
had so many coups and countercoups that no elected leader has been
able to complete his term in the nearly four decades since the
country won its independence from Portugal. The most recent coup occurred
in April 2012, just weeks before the presidential runoff election.
YANGON, Myanmar Activists in Myanmar say police have injured seven people
and arrested three others in a new crackdown on residents opposed to
a controversial Chinese-backed copper mine project. The violence occurred
Thursday near northwest Myanmar's Letpadaung mine as farmers plowed their
land, which was seized for the project.Environmental activist Han Win Aung
says one farmer was shot by police and six others were beaten. He
says police arrested two villagers and one activist.Another activist, Tha
Gyi, says the farmers had been working their land since Tuesday and
around 100 riot police and 50 soldiers tried to drive them away.Local
officials could not immediately be reached for comment.Residents opposed
to the project say it causes environmental, social and health problems in
the area.
