i in her bid to become speaker
of the House. Two years earlier, the DCCC canceled all ad support for
Florida Rep. Tim Mahoney who was accused of having an affair with
a former aide and then paying her to keep quiet. It was
later reported he also had an affair with a second woman around
the same time. Ironically, Mahoneys political career had taken off after
he replaced Republican Rep. Mark Foley who himself had a very public
fall from grace after admitting to exchanging sexually explicit messages
with an underage boy.Sanfords well-known scandal involved his extramarital
affair. He first made scandalous headlines when he told staffers he was going
to hike the Appalachian Trail but instead was discovered having the affair.
Sanford admitted to seeing his mistress on a 2008 taxpayer-funded trade
mission to Argentina. He ended up paying $74,000 to settle the ethics charges
against him and was working toward reviving his political career, having
just won the GOP primary in the special election race. But court documents
released this week show that Sanfords ex-wife, Jenny, filed a complaint
with police on Feb. 4, accusing the former governor of trespassing. The
couples 2010 divorce agreement says neither one can be at the others
house without permission and that seemed to be the last straw for
his NRCC backers. In 1976, the DCCC reached its boiling point with
then-chairman Rep. Wayne Hays after The Washington Post quoted a secretary

Moscow media report reveals new details about the Islamic interests and
online activity of the Chechen brothers linked to Monday's Boston Marathon
bombing. The Moscow Times says the Russian Foreign Ministry is investigating
reports that the suspects-- Djohar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev-- were involved
in the bombing that killed three people and injured at least 176.
The brothers are believed to have fled Chechnya during the first Chechen
war in 1994-96. The family apparently lived in Central Asia and then
in Dagestan, near Chechnyaa predominantly Muslim republic in Russias North
Caucasus thats become an epicenter of the Islamic insurgency.A man named
Djohar Tsarnaev has a page on the Russian equivalent of Facebook, Vkontakte,
describing his world view as Islam and his personal priorities as career
and money. The page also says he attended a school in Makhachkala,
Russia from 1999 to 2001, and he speaks Chechen, English, and Russian. The
Moscow Times says a man named Tamerlan Tsarnaev is associated with a
YouTube account that lists favorite Islam-related videos, including one
called Lets Devote Our Lives to Jihad.Talking about his Muslim faith, Tamerlan
is quoted as saying, I am very religious and there are no
values anymore.Tamerlan reportedly belongs totwo Chechnya-related groups

<p style="font-size:xx-small;"> May 10, 2012: Thomas Perez, now the Labor secretary nominee, speaks in
Phoenix.APLabor secretary nominee Thomas Perez was confronted Thursday with
tough questions about an alleged "secret deal" he cut with leaders from
St. Paul, Minn., during his tenure as a top attorney at the
Justice Department.During Perez' confirmation hearing, Sen. Lamar Alexander,
R-Tenn., accused the nominee of "manipulating" the system to get the result
he wanted - and potentially costing taxpayers millions of dollars in the
process.According to a Republican report released earlier this week, Perez
helped persuade St. Paul to drop a contentious lawsuit in exchange for
the Justice Department staying out of whistleblower cases brought against
the city. Perez' "quid pro quo" potentially cost taxpayers as much as
$200 million, the report said."That seems to me to be an extraordinary
amount of wheeling and dealing outside the normal responsibilities of the
assistant attorney general for civil rights," said Alexander, who is the
top Republican on the Senate panel screening Perez' nomination."It seems
you have a duty to the government to collect the money, a
duty to protect the whistleblower who's kind of left hanging in the
wind."Both cases involved the city of St. Paul. The 67-page report states
that the Justice Department's decision to opt out of the whistleblower cases
potentially cost taxpayers as much as $200 million -- the amount the
government could have won ha
Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., citing last month's
poor jobs report, claimed the changes could put Americans in direct competition
with more immigrants for scarce jobs, even in low-skilled areas."This is
indisputable. We have more unskilled labor than we can find jobs for
today," he said. The bill would aim to boost border security, improve legal
immigration programs and eventually grant citizenship to some 11 million
people here illegally. The 844-page legislation was introduced around 2 a.m.
Wednesday, and critics say there's been insufficient time to digest it and
they've pushed for more hearings and a long process. Friday's hearing was
the first of two the Judiciary Committee is expected to hold on
the bill before it begins amending and voting on it next month. The
Associated Press contributed to this report.
