Republicans say spending for House operations, including lawmaker offices,
has dropped by more than $200 million since they took control three
years ago.GOP lawmakers said Thursday they saved the money mainly by trimming
the budgets of committees, leadership offices and individual lawmaker offices.The
House imposed an 8.2 percent reduction on lawmakers' personal office budgets
in March, after automatic, across-the-board cuts in most federal programs
took effect. That came on top of 11 percent cuts to office
budgets during 2011 and 2012.Committees also took an 11 percent hit this
year."Many families and small businesses are cutting back, and it's only
right that the House of Representatives lead by example," House Speaker
John Boehner, R-Ohio, said.Congress "should not be immune to our economic
hardship, which is why Republicans have implemented the largest cut to the
House's operating budget in recent history," said House Administration Committee
Chairman Candice Miller, R-Mich.They said the operating budget in fiscal
2013, ending in September, was $1.16 billion, down from about $1.37 billion
in 2010, the last year Democrats were in the majority.House members, who
receive annual office budgets of more than $1 million, say they are
economizing by traveling less, putting off new office purchases and not
hiring new staff. While furloughs have largely been avoided, House maintenance
projects have been delayed, retiring employees are not being
with varying degrees of confidence that "the
Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria,
specifically the chemical agent sarin."Secretary of State John Kerry further
confirmed that there were two documented instances of chemical weapons use.The
White House, however, stressed that this was not enough to confirm how
the nerve gas was released -- though acknowledged it is "very likely"
to have originated with the regime of Bashar Assad -- and pressed

the White House director of the Office of Legislative Affairs to leading

been crossed and "action must be taken to prevent larger scale use."She

thousands with its chemical weapons. The world must come together to prevent
this by unified action which results in the secure containment of Syria's
significant stockpile of chemical weapons. On the basis of this new assessment,

Republicans have found one that doesn't make them cringe.A contentious bill
which could come for a final vote in the Senate as early
as Thursday would empower states to make online retailers collect sales
taxes for purchases made over the Internet. Though it would likely face
more resistance in the House, where the anti-tax creed is more pronounced,
a number of Senate Republicans -- and Republican governors -- are supporting
the bill.The legislation passed a test vote in the Senate Wednesday, 74
to 23, with 27 Republicans voting in favor. Senate Majority Leader Harry
Reid, D-Nev., vowed to pass the bill this week, before senators leave
for a scheduled vacation.Some of the most powerful anti-tax advocacy groups
in Washington are still fighting to block the bill. Grover Norquist, president
of Americans for Tax Reform, warns the bill would set a "precedent
for further expansions of state-level tax collection authority."He said
the bill is about "money-hungry state legislators."The Heritage Foundation
says that "real conservatives" oppose the bill and that it would hurt
online commerce and force small businesses to jump through new bureaucratic
hoops.Yet a number of prominent conservatives are voicing support for the
plan. Under the bill, the sales taxes would be sent to the

civilian nuclear agreement and postponing a contentious decision on whether
Seoul will be allowed to reprocess spent fuel as it seeks to
expand its atomic energy industry.Wednesday's announcement is a setback
to South Korea's new leader, Park Geun-hye, who had made revision of
the 39-year-old treaty one of her top election pledges, but it alleviates
a potential disagreement between the allies when Park visits Washington
in two weeks to meet with President Obama.State Department spokesman Patrick
Ventrell said the extension will provide more time for the two governments
to complete the complex negotiations on a successor agreement that will
recommence in June."These are very technical talks, and both parties felt
that we needed more time," he told reporters.South Korea is the world's
fifth-largest nuclear energy producer and is planning to expand domestic
use of nuclear power and exports of nuclear reactors. But its radioactive
waste storage is filling up, so it wants to be able to
