It's a rare bird who loves hanging out at the gym. Most
of us count the minutes until the workout's over and we can
get on with our (way more fun) day. So the last thing
we want to do is spend time using exercise machines that don't
do anything for us. While no machine is totally useless if used
properly, some just aren't terribly effective, says Lani Muelrath, fitness
expert and author of Fit Quickies. Plus, they put you at risk--too
great a risk--of injury, she says.Swap out these 10 useless machines for
more effective, expert-recommended moves.1. LEG-CURL MACHINEWhy it's useless:
Your hamstrings perform two movements: knee flexion and hip extension. The
leg curl machine works only knee flexion, which limits the benefits, says
Muelrath. What to do instead: Choose a machine or movement that works both
hamstring functions at once, such as the fitness ball hip raise and
curl.To do: Lie on your back with legs straight, heels on the
ball. Raise your hips by pressing your heels into the ball until
your legs are straight. Keep your hips raised as you roll the
ball in toward you by bending your knees. Continue rolling out and
back towards you for 10 to 12 reps.RELATED: 7 Ways to Burn
More Calories2. PULLEY MACHINE FOR SIDE BENDSWhy it's useless: Endless side
crunches on this pulley machine do nothing for reducing "love handles,"
as many people believe. "It's not only ineffective, but can put undue
stress on the lower back," says Muelrath.Wha
friend,
told the court that Martin complained that a man was just watching
him. And Martin described this man, Jeantel said, as a creepy, white,
excuse my language, cracker --- creepy-ass cracker.Jeantels testimony set
off a stupid debate, requiring total ignorance of slavery and legal segregation,
about the equivalence of blacks using cracker to describe whites, versus
whites using the word nigger to describe blacks. And Jeantels physical appearance,
as a dark, heavyset young woman, speaking with a Southern dialect as
she gave the lawyers a lot of attitude with her curt answers,
contributed to the racial view of the case. She became the teenage mammy,
in the words of a sociology professor quoted in the New York
Times, caricatured for not being smart and using these racial slurs and
not being the best witness. And now the media, especially some conservative
talk radio outlets, are fixated on the possibility of race riots if
Zimmerman is acquitted. Meanwhile, Twitter and other social media sites
are full of threats from angry black people to kill Zimmerman if
he is not held accountable by a jury for killing Martin.Martin, the
17-year-old, is dead. But he has not escaped the racial slander attached
to this case. Zimmermans backers note that Martin had smoked marijuana
as if that is unusual among American teenagers. They seem delighted to
find online messages in which he took on a rapper, street-thug persona
and posed as a tough guy. These

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">April 25, 2012: Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano testifies on
Capitol Hill in Washington.APJanet Napolitano is resigning as head of the
Homeland Security Department and seeking a post as president of the University
of California, the long-time Obama confidant announced Friday.Officials
told Fox News that Napolitano does not plan to leave her post
until September. But she announced the move on Friday after it began
to break in the media, revealing that she has been nominated to
lead the California university system."For more than four years I have had
the privilege of serving President Obama and his Administration as the Secretary
of Homeland Security," she said in a statement. "The opportunity to work
with the dedicated men and women of the Department of Homeland Security,
who serve on the frontlines of our nation's efforts to protect our
communities and families from harm, has been the highlight of my professional
career. We have worked together to minimize threats of all kinds to
the American public."Napolitano has ridden out a rocky tenure, having endured
a string of lawsuits and multiple controversies regarding the agencies that
DHS oversees. Among the complaints, Immigration and Customs Enforcement
agents accused the department leadership in a lawsuit of failing to properly
enforce immigration law.Their complaints center on the practice of using
"prosecutorial discretion" -- allowing department lawyers to selectively

the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.APA federal appeals court
in Virginia on Thursday rejected a Christian university's bid to overturn
the Obama administration's health care law.A three-judge panel of the 4th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously affirmed a lower court ruling
dismissing Liberty University's lawsuit.Liberty argued the employer health
insurance mandate of the Affordable Care Act violates the school's religious
rights by requiring it to provide coverage for abortion inducing drugs.
The appeals court found no merit in the claim."Plaintiffs present no plausible
claim that the act substantially burdens their free exercise of religion,
by forcing them to facilitate or support abortion or otherwise," Judge James
A. Wynn Jr. wrote in the opinion. He wrote the law "allows
an individual to obtain, and an employer to offer, a plan that
covers no abortion services at all."The opinion was joined by Judges Andre
M. Davis and Diana Gribbon Motz. Davis and Wynn are Obama appointees,
and Motz was appointed by Bill Clinton. The same panel in 2011
ruled Liberty's lawsuit was premature. The Supreme Court upheld the health
care law in another case in June 2012, and in November the
justices ordered the appeals court to reconsider Liberty's case in light
of that ruling.Liberty attorney Mat Staver said he plans to appeal."At least
