ISTANBUL Police have blocked hundreds of journalists from marching in Istanbul
to demand press freedoms and denounce the harassment of colleagues during
a spate of anti-government demonstrations last month.Journalists were detained
or targeted by police while covering the nearly three weeks of protests,
and some who sided with protesters were sacked or resigned. The journalists
on Friday planned to walk to a main square but were prevented
by police. They staged a brief sit-in before dispersing.Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan's government has shown little tolerance of dissent and dozens
of journalists have been jailed or fired since it came to power
a decade ago.Erdogan's government insists it is committed to democracy,
citing reforms that reduced the use of torture and increased the rights
of the country's Kurdish minority.

it exploded in the military zone of the northern Iraqi city of
Kirkuk on July 11, 2013.AFPBAGHDAD, Iraq (AFP) Attacks mainly targeting
security forces killed nine people on Friday in Iraq, including a police
brigadier general, a day after 56 people died in bombings and shootings,
police and doctors said. The latest violence came amid a surge of deadly
unrest across the country where more than 2,500 people have been killed
this year, including more than 260 this month alone.Analysts point to widespread
discontent among Iraq's minority Sunni community, and the Shiite authorities'
failure to address their grievances, as the main factors driving the increase
in violence.Gunmen shot dead Brigadier General Sabri Abed Issa on his way
to a mosque near Sharqat, northwest of Baghdad, while others killed a
retired policeman in front of his home in Muqdadiyah, northeast of the
capital. In the northern city of Mosul, a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged
vehicle at a police checkpoint, killing four policemen and wounding two
others.A magnetic "sticky bomb" also killed a civilian in Mosul, while a
roadside bomb south of the city killed a policeman and wounded another. And
a "sticky bomb" killed an anti-Al-Qaeda militiaman and wounded another person
near Baquba, also north of Baghdad. The attacks came a day after a
wave of violence killed 56 people, 31 of them members of the

and Muslim rebels have agreed to try to curb violence during Ramadan,
a Malaysian official said Friday, marking a new step towards ending nearly
a decade of conflict. An insurgency in the Muslim-dominated region has claimed
more than 5,700 lives since 2004 but talks between the Thai authorities
and some rebel groups including the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) have
brought tentative hopes of peace.Malaysia is acting as a facilitator for
the negotiations. But despite several rounds of talks since March, attacks
in the region have occurred almost daily.Mediator Ahmad Zamzamin Hashim
said that both parties had "reached a common understanding to work towards
a violence-free Ramadan".Under the "Ramadan Peace Initiative", Thai security

the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.APA federal appeals court
in Virginia on Thursday rejected a Christian university's bid to overturn
the Obama administration's health care law.A three-judge panel of the 4th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously affirmed a lower court ruling
dismissing Liberty University's lawsuit.Liberty argued the employer health
insurance mandate of the Affordable Care Act violates the school's religious
rights by requiring it to provide coverage for abortion inducing drugs.
The appeals court found no merit in the claim."Plaintiffs present no plausible
claim that the act substantially burdens their free exercise of religion,
by forcing them to facilitate or support abortion or otherwise," Judge James
A. Wynn Jr. wrote in the opinion. He wrote the law "allows
an individual to obtain, and an employer to offer, a plan that
covers no abortion services at all."The opinion was joined by Judges Andre
M. Davis and Diana Gribbon Motz. Davis and Wynn are Obama appointees,
and Motz was appointed by Bill Clinton. The same panel in 2011
ruled Liberty's lawsuit was premature. The Supreme Court upheld the health
care law in another case in June 2012, and in November the
justices ordered the appeals court to reconsider Liberty's case in light
of that ruling.Liberty attorney Mat Staver said he plans to appeal."At least
