story reads like a real-life version of "Downton Abbey," the hit period
drama about the family of an earl who has no direct heir
to inherit his title.Like the fictional character Lord Grantham, the aristocrat
has three daughters but no sons. In order for his title to
live on in future generations, the 69-year-old has no choice but to
pass it to a distant relative abroad, someone he has not even
met."It's a sadness in life that my wife and I never had
a son," said the viscount, who lives with his wife in the
countryside west of London. "But I suppose I would rather someone inherit
it than have it dying out.""Downton Abbey" may be set in the
early 20th century and its characters may be fictional, but the effects
of a centuries-old rule that puts boys before girls are very real
to Torrington and hundreds of hereditary peers in modern Britain. It's still
a man's world when it comes to inheritance among Britain's peerage, an

A New York resident got into a high-profile fight with the state
government this week after officials ordered him to turn over his gun
license and his firearms -- a dispute that exposed potential problems with
the recently passed gun law.Buffalo-area resident David Lewis has since
gotten his license reinstated in what was apparently a case of mistaken
identity under the state's new SAFE Act. The case drew outrage on
gun-rights blogs warning that the state was exploiting the law to seize
weapons.Lewis' lawyer, indicating this may be an indication of a broader
issue, also claims to be representing a second client in a similar
circumstance.Lewis initially received a notice on April 1 from the Erie
County clerk saying that his license was being immediately suspended. He
was ordered to surrender it along with his seven registered handguns."Based
on the information received from the New York State Police, your pistol
license [redacted] has been suspended by direction of the Licensing Officer
for Erie County," reads the letter sent to Lewis and obtained by
Fox News. "Failure to comply with this court directive upon receipt of
this letter will be sufficient grounds for the revocation of your pistol
license."Lewis, who does not have a criminal record, caught the eye of
state officials because it was believed that because of a prescription for
psychotropic drugs that he was a danger to others, his attorney claims.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">South Korea and Japan against these threats. And we
will defend ourselves," he said.Speaking beside Kerry, South Korea's Yun
called for more United Nations action against Pyongyang if it commits another
provocation. He refused to comment specifically on the U.S. intelligence
report, saying only that the North has "high nuclear and missile capabilities"
but that it is still some time away from a nuclear bomb
that is "small, light and diversified."Kerry offered strong words of solidarity
for South Korea, and praised South Korea President Park Geun-hyes "bright
vision" of a prosperous and reunified Korean Peninsula without nuclear weapons.
By contrast, he said North Korea's Kim, has a choice to make
between provocation and returning to talks to de-escalate tension and lead
to the end of its nuclear programBoth Yun and Kerry kept the
door open for future negotiations with Pyongyang. But both seemed to suggest
that they were unlikely in light of the North's increasingly bombastic threats,
including nuclear strikes on the United States. Most experts say those are
unfeasible based on the North's current capacity and would never be explored
seriously because the U.S. response would be overwhelming against a regime
focused primarily on survival.Kerry said any talks with North Korea have
to lead toward denuclearization. They have to be really serious," Kerry said.
"No one is going to talk for the sake of talking and
no one is going to play this roun
w confusion and resentment over inheritance
among existing heirs and their siblings.Titles can't be split, and splitting
a mansion isn't always a good idea either."Inheriting a great draughty mansion
with obligations is not everybody's idea of fun in 2013. Even worse
is to inherit a minority interest in it -- for example, a
split between five heirs," said Roderick Balfour, an earl who has four
daughters and no son.Balfour recently wrote to the government to propose
a compromise: A title should pass to first-born daughters, but only in
cases when there is no son. It's not exactly gender equality, he
said, but it would at least present a workable solution to families
like his.Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said he was "sympathetic"
to extending the royal reforms to titles, but the government has indicated
it isn't going to act soon to tackle the issue -- not
least because few Britons are likely to rally behind moves to preserve
the nobility.James Gray, a campaigner for the anti-monarchy group Republic,
concedes that the international success of "Downton Abbey" -- which has
won millions of fans in the U.S. and elsewhere -- may signal
a widespread fascination with the lives of blue bloods, but that doesn't
mean people at home admire or want to emulate a crusty upper
class. He raised another point: Since monarchy and aristocracy are inherently
unfair and discriminatory, some may see achieving gender equality in those
institutions as r
