announced that CareGroup HealthCare System has completed the rollout of =
a Web-based electronic health record (EHR) throughout the Beth Israel =
Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) ambulatory care network. The =
implementation, which is expected to reduce the potential for medical =
errors in ambulatory care delivery as well as significantly increase =
Medicare revenues, is built on the CACH=C9 post-relational database. =
InterSystems highlighted the EHR implementation at the HIMSS 2005 =
conference in Dallas, Texas.=20
The leading database provider in healthcare and number two embedded =

High Performance, RAD Features, Scalability Critical for Success
"We have a long history of successful Web implementations based on =
CACH=C9," said CareGroup CIO John Halamka. "Its ability to support rapid =
application development, and to deliver top-tier application performance =
and enterprise scalability have made it an integral component of our =
overall IT strategy. So, when the time came to deliver a patient EHR to =
ambulatory care providers in remote locations, CACH=C9 was the right =
database choice."
Rollout of the multi-county system, dubbed WebOMR, began in early 2004 =
with the final locations in the BIDMC network going live in December. =
The remainder of the 72 ambulatory care practices associated with =
CareGroup will be going live with WebOMR this year and the patient =
information is also available on a view-only basis to qualified =
referring physicians. "WebOMR is, in effect, our major strategy for =
sharing clinical information in our community," Halamka noted.
Improved Care, Medicare Revenue Protection
CareGroup is projecting significant care delivery benefits from the =
recently completed implementation. "The WebOMR includes an ambulatory =
clinical physician order entry (CPOE) component that reduces the =
potential for medical error," Halamka explained. "By automatically =
checking orders for possible negative medication interactions or patient =
drug allergies, for example, the chance for negative medication impact =
is cut dramatically," he said.
The ambulatory CPOE component of the WebOMR system will be used for =
approximately two million outpatient encounters annually. It is =
estimated that Web-based POE systems prevent about 50 percent of medical =
errors, according to the Center for Information Technology Leadership =
(CITL), a research organization established to help guide the healthcare =
community in making more informed strategic IT investment decisions. At =
a national level, CITL=92s analysis shows that ambulatory CPOE systems =
can avoid more than two million adverse drug events annually, 130,000 of =
which are life-threatening. "It=92s clear that the care delivery =
improvement made possible by the CACH=C9-based WebOMR CPOE component =
alone will be very important," said Halamka.=20
Cost savings projections from the WebOMR implementation are equally =
positive. For example, CITL=92s model projects annual savings of =
approximately $44 billion with nationwide implementation of advanced =
ambulatory CPOE systems. "CareGroup expects to realize a proportional =
amount of those savings," Halamka said. In addition, the WebOMR makes it =
easier to provide Medicare with all of the billing information and =
documentation within the timeframe necessary to receive reimbursement. =
CareGroup estimates revenue protection of hundreds of thousands of =
dollars annually made possible by the ability of the WebOMR to speed up =
Medicare information delivery.
"By making it possible for physician notes and patient information to be =
shared among all of our providers, WebOMR not only enhances =
communication but will result in increased billing because of =
documentation improvements. It=92s a winning scenario for everyone in =
our network," Halamka said.
