Subject: Bogofilter-0.92.0 - New Stable Release
Bogofilter is a mail filter that classifies email as spam or ham
(non-spam) by a statistical analysis of the message's header and content
(body). The program is able to learn from the user's classifications
and corrections.
The statistical technique is known as the Bayesian technique and its use
for spam was described by Paul Graham in his article "A Plan For Spam".
Gary Robinson, in his weblog Rants, suggests some refinements for
improved discrimination between spam and ham. Bogofilter's primary
algorithm uses the f(w) parameter and the Fisher inverse chi-square
technique that he describes.
Bogofilter is run by an MDA script to classify an incoming message as
spam or ham (using wordlists stored by BerkeleyDB). Bogofilter provides
processing for plain text and html, supports multi-part mime message
with decoding of base64, quoted-printable, and uuencoded text and
ignores attachments, such as images.
Bogofilter is written in C. Supported platforms: Linux, FreeBSD,
Solaris, OS X, HP-UX, AIX, RISC-OS, OS/2, ...

Subject: Free software gets a new home in East Africa
http://www.tectonic.co.za/default.php?action=view&id=307&topic=Open%20Source
June 22 2004 - The free and open source software (Foss) community has
got a new home in East Africa. A recent venture between Linux Solutions,
the International Institute of Communication and Development and Uganda
Martyrs University has led to the formation of the East African Centre
for Open Source Software (EACOSS). Wire Lunghabo James, managing
director of Linux Solutions, says EACOSS intends offering FOSS training
for the "growing army of ICT professionals in the region". The center is
initially focused on developing these skills in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania,
Rwanda and Burundi.
James says the mission of EACOSS is to "promote the use and access to
Free and Open Source Software in the East African community and
contribute to its development through empowering people with ICT
skills." The center was established in April of this year and is based
in Kampala, Uganda.
The center is established on the premise that through the use of open
source software the digital gap between the advanced nations and the
developing nations can be bridged and poverty reduced, says James.
"Lower costs, access to software for all and improved capacity
development provide that starting point".
EACOSS has already introduced training, certification and free access to
software in the EACOSS center. "It enables people from around the region
learn more about effective, affordable and appropriate software
technology to use for development in Africa."
“At EACOSS we believe that FOSS solutions are an opportunity for Africa
to leapfrog into the information age. The current hurdle that needs to
be skipped has more to do with skills and that is the gap that this
center is aiming to fill,” says James.

Subject: GNU Libidn 0.5.0 alpha released (fwd)
========== Forwarded message ==========
Hello. This release add some code to detect the "problem sequences"
discussed in UTC's public review issue #29. To perhaps explain this
in less obfuscated terms, here follow some paragraphs from the manual:
A deficiency in the specification of Unicode Normalization Forms
has been found. The consequence is that some strings can be
normalized into different strings by different implementations. In
other words, two different implementations may return different
output for the same input (because the interpretation of the
specification is ambiguous). Further, an implementation invoked
again on the one of the output strings may return a different
string (because one of the interpretation of the ambiguous
specification make normalization non-idempotent). Fortunately,
only a select few character sequence exhibit this problem, and none
of them are expected to occur in natural languages (due to
different linguistic uses of the involved characters).
A full discussion of the problem may be found at
`http://www.unicode.org/review/pr-29.html'.
The PR29 functions below allow you to detect the problem
sequence. So when would you want to use these functions? For most
applications, such as those using Nameprep for IDN, this is likely
only to be an interoperability problem. Thus, you may not want to
care about it, as the character sequences will rarely occur
naturally. However, if you are using a profile, such as SASLPrep,
to process authentication tokens; authorization tokens; or
passwords, there is a real danger that attackers may try to use the
peculiarities in these strings to attack parts of your system. As
only a small number of strings, and no naturally occurring strings,
exhibit this problem, the conservative approach of rejecting the
strings is recommended. If this approach is not used, you should
instead verify that all parts of your system, that process the
tokens and passwords, use a NFKC implementation that produce the
same output for the same input.
Regards,
Simon
GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode and IDNA
specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names
(IDN) working group, used for internationalized domain names. The
library contains a generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode
3.2 NFKC normalization, mapping and prohibitation of characters, and
bidirectional character handling. Profiles for Nameprep, iSCSI, SASL
and XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE)
via IDNA are supported. A mechanism to define Top-Level Domain (TLD)
specific validation tables, and to compare strings against those
tables, is included. Default tables for some TLDs are also included.

Subject: First Linux distribution with Global File System released
Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux Gets Global File System (GFS) Support
27. June 2004
Lineox, Inc. released today Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux
version 3.023, the 23th version of Always Current Lineox Enterprise
Linux since 23. Feb. 2004. A new version of Always Current Lineox
Enterprise Linux is always released when Red Hat, Inc. releases bug or
security fix packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0, but occasionally
also when new features are added to Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux.
This latest release of Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux is a
feature enhancement release, which adds the packages built from Red Hat
Global File System (2200 USD) sources. Always Current Lineox Enterprise
Linux has always had packages built from Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Advanced Server 3.0 (1499 USD), Red Hat Cluster Suite (499 USD), and Red
Hat Developer Suite (free as an introductory offer) sources, so the
total cost of comparable software is now up to 4198 USD. Always Current
Lineox Enterprise Linux is however available for download for only 10
Euros for one type of disk image(s) or 15 Euros for both CD and DVD images.
Global File System (GFS) is an open source, POSIX-compliant cluster file
system and volume manager that that can be used on Lineox Enterprise
Linux servers attached to a storage area network (SAN). It works on all
major server and storage platforms. The leading (and first) cluster file
system for Linux, GFS has the most complete feature set, widest industry
adoption, broadest application support, and best price/performance of
any Linux cluster file system today. GFS allows Lineox Enterprise Linux
servers to simultaneously read and write to a single shared file system
on the SAN, achieving high performance and reducing the complexity and
overhead of managing redundant data copies. GFS has no single point of
failure, is incrementally scalable from one to hundreds of Lineox
Enterprise Linux servers, and works with all standard Linux applications.
GFS will be supported like the Cluster and the Developer Suite with
updates, which are all included in the update support service for Lineox
Enterprise Linux 3.0 starting at 15 Euros per year for single systems.
Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.023 needs 4 CD images, it
started as 3 disk set, the DVD image size is now 2.161 GB and it started
as 1,729 GB. It contains now 376 updated or new packages totaling 1,150
GB, so approximately half of the contents is already changed from the
original release of Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.0 in just 5 months.

========== Forwarded message ==========
Hello everyone from the worldwide Linux community,
My name is Yordan Dimitrov Minev and I am an undergraduate student
majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science at St. Lawrence University,
Canton, NY. Along with my adviser Professor Robert Torres, this summer I
am working on an academic research-project investigating the trends in
the open source/free software, entitled "Will the penuin break the
windows?"
Some of the issues I am interested in researching are the reasons that
people use and develop for Linux, the ideological differences between
the free software foundation and the open source foundation, and the
reasons some computer users are dissatisfied with proprietary,
closed-source software.
Aiming to understand how the Linux users feel about the open source
software, I developed a web-based survey, and I kindly ask all of you to
participate. You can start the survey by going to
http://myslu.stlawu.edu/~ydmine03/survey.html It shoud not take you more
than 15-30 minutes. I would like to ask all of you who are
administrators of Linux user groups to forward this e-mail to the
members of your user group. Also, feel free to forward this e-mail to
other Linux user groups you colaborate with. My aim is to get as many
respondents as possible. Furthermore, I would be delighted to have
respondents with different levels of computer experience.
In the coming weeks, after analysing the results from the survey, I will
write a paper and I will make a short presentation on the topic at St.
Lawrence University. I would like to stress that the purpose of this
survey is solely educational. I fully assure you that the results I
obtain and all materials from this project will never be sold; rather,
they will remain freely available at
http://myslu.stlawu.edu/~ydmine03/survey.html. Your privacy will also be
protected, and at no time will I publish, give away, or sell your
personal information or e-mail address.
Lastly, I would like to appologize for not sending you a survey in your
native language. Speaking primarily a language other than English
myself, I very much appreciate the diversity of cultures and languages
in the contemporary world.
Thank you very much for participating in my survey. If you have any
questions, concerns, or comments, please do not hessitate to contact me
(ydmine03@stlawu.edu) or my adviser for this project, Professor Robert
Torres (rtorres@stlawu.edu). Either one of us would be happy to answer
your questions or address your concerns.
Regards,
Yordan Minev
