I have uploaded to sunsite.unc.edu's incoming directory a new version
of the PPP software daemon. The 'home' directory for pppd is
/pub/Linux/system/Network/serial.
This ppp package is the daemon support code needed to support a PPP
connection with Linux. It is a variant on the 2.1.2 distribution of
pppd by Paul Mackerras and has been changed in the 'linux' related
areas. For the other ports (except for SunOS and Ultrix, see below)
the code is essentially the same as the original 2.1.2 version.
Please do not use this package on platforms other than Linux.
The principle changes to the files are:
1. Unknown authentication protocol requests will be properly NAKed if
pppd is configured to support a known value. This is the proper
response for Microsoft's PPP code.
2. The removal of the ppp.c driver from the linux directory. Since the
current 'stable' kernel is 1.2 and this includes the driver, the
packaging of the driver is not suitable with the daemon.
3. The code has been built with the 4.6.30 version of libc. If you have
this version or later then you will not receive a warning. If you are
still running the 4.5 libraries, you should either re-compile the binary
or, hopefully, upgrade the library.
4. I updated the FAQ document with the current version.
5. I have **removed** the SunOS and Ultrix ports from this file. They
employ code which contains a restrictive license agreement for commercial
packaging. It is better that the Linux CDROM distributions support
the Linux version of PPP than have to delete the PPP code because the
file includes streams functions which has a license against commercial
packaging.
(We have tried to contact the Streams author and request that he change
the terms to match the remainder of the package -- BSD. He was unwilling
to do this previously, and now, does not seem to be found.)
The original SunOS and Ultrix ports are available at bellatrix.anu.edu.au
in /pub/ppp, and the mirrors at ftp.merit.edu and ftp.uu.net and their
associated mirror sites around the world.
With the exception of these items, the code is the same as the 2.1.2b logic.
