Subject: Fcron 2.9.4 - a replacement for Vixie cron and anacron

What is new in this release (2.9.4) ?
====================================

     * Merged support for SE Linux (patch from Russell Coker : thanks !)
     * Work on the documentation (fixed spelling mistakes, tried to make
       things clearer in fcrontab.5) (thanks Bill Wohler for your help !)
     * Changed the subject line of mail reports : it now contains the
       subject line, and is very similar to vixie cron's one.
     * Added a sum-up at the end of ./configure.
     * bug fix : "makewhatis" bug is fixed -- at last !
       In fact, the problems encountered were due to an abusively ignored
       signal SIGPIPE.
     * bug fix : possible crash of fcron when trying to save a file if
       there was no space left on device.
     * bug fix : we don't consider '-' and '_' as word delimiters for a
       username before the command anymore, since many programs have one
       of these characters in their name.
     * bug fix : option first was broken in fcron 2.9.3.
     * fixed a little typo in an error message (could->couldn't)
     * bug fix : do not ignore the last line of a fcrontab if there is no
       \n before the end of file.
     * fixed compile on SunOS 5.9 .
     * Fcron now compiles on MacOS X.
     * added some $srcdir to be able (again ;) ) to run configure from
       another directory.
     * Perf improvement : use buffer for i/o in run_job().

What is fcron ?
==============

Fcron is a scheduler. It aims at replacing Vixie Cron, so it implements most
of its functionalities.

But contrary to Vixie Cron, fcron does not need your system to be up 7 days
a week, 24 hours a day : it also works well with systems which are
not running neither all the time nor regularly (contrary to anacrontab).

In other words, fcron does both the job of Vixie Cron and anacron, but does
even more and better :)) ...

To do so, fcron allows you to use the standard mode in which you tell
it to execute one command at a given date and hour and to make it run
a command according to its time of execution, which is normally the same as
system up time. For example :

   Run the task 'save /home/ directory'
   every 3h15 of system up time.

and, of course, in order to make it really useful, the time remaining until
next execution is saved each time the system is stopped.

You can also say :

   run that command once between 2am and 5am

which will be done if the system is running at any time in this interval.

Fcron also includes a useful system of options, which can be applied
either to
every lines following the declaration or to a single line. Some of
the supported options permit to:
- run jobs one by one,
- set the max system load average value under which the job should be run,
- set a nice value for a job,
- run jobs at fcron's startup if they should have been run
  during system down time,
- mail user to tell him a job has not run and why,
- a better management of the mailing of outputs ...

Hi
How come the december issue of the magazine was not available in
the markets here(kathmandu,Nepal).I could be a subscriber,but it often
costs very less to buy the magazine at the news-stand(The cover price
of Rs50) than to be a subscriber.I don't understand why the Indian
magazines charge exuberant prices for their magazine despite the open
border and almost non-existant taxes.

Subject: Afio archiver version 2.5

Subject: Afio archiver version 2.5
Keywords: backup archiver compressed fault tolerant afio cpio

After being more than 1 year in beta, this new afio version includes
support for >2GB files.

* WHAT IS AFIO?

Afio is an archiver/backup program that produces cpio-format archives.

Like tar, afio can make compressed archives. However, the compressed
archives produced by afio are much safer than tar -z archives. If a
tar -z archive has a read error, tar is unable to extract the files
beyond this error. The compressed archive format used by afio allows
it to recover from read errors and go on unpacking the next file.

* WHAT IS NEW IN VERSION 2.5?

- Added support for archiving files larger than 2 GB.
  The resulting archives are not fully compatible with cpio, but
  preserve cpio compatibility as much as possible.

- Various small bug fixes.

- Added support for creating archives larger than 2GB on a filesystem.

- New -6 option to suppress the compression of files based on shell
  pattern matching.

- New -vv option for ls -l style file list output when creating an
  archive.

- Restores modification time of directories correctly.

- Improved/debugged support for handling many hard linked files.

- Support for UID/GID values larger than 64K.

- Some additional small new features.

- Improved documentation.

- Added automatic regression that can be used to test the binary after
  compilation.

* WHERE DO I GET IT?

Version 2.5 is at:

And soon at

  ibiblio.org : /pub/Linux/system/backup/afio-2.5.tgz

Subject: Rekall 2.2.0 Beta1: With More Developments

Rekall is a database front end, somewhat in the style of Access, formerly
sold by theKompany.com but now released under a GPL license. See

http://www.rekallrevealed.org

============

Rekall 2.2.0 Beta1 is now available. Following the current trend of giving
open source softwate releases cheesy names, this is the "With More
Development" release.

I would like to be able to claim that there are no bugs in this release:)
However, I am quite certain that some bugs are there to be found, even if I
am not sure of their location. I am confident that users will be able to
inspect this release of Rekall for such bugs, and be able to report back on
them.

The source tarball can be downloaded from:

http://www.rekallrevealed.org/packages/

Changes in this release are mostly aimed at getting it to build cleanly on
current and recent releases. It has been build (by me) on:

RH 7.3, 8, 9
MDK 9.0, 9.1, 9.2
SuSE 8.1, 8.2, 9.0

and has also been reported to build on

Source Mage GNU/Linux 0.8.0

In each case the installation is essentially a "stock" distribution with the
necessary development packages installed.

See the file README.FIRST inside the tarball for details; this is also
available at http://www.rekallrevealed.org, follow

Content->Obtaining and Building->Obtaining and Building.

This also contains the CVS information.

Regards
Mike Richardson
