UNILEVER JOINS OPEN SOURCE BODY TO ADOPT LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM
Linux will help simplify Unilever's IT infrastructure

Unilever has become the first non-IT company to join the Open Source
Development Lab (OSDL). OSDL is the focal point for the development of the
Linux Operating System, influencing IT distributors and application
providers.

The OSDL's chief executive officer, Stuart Cohen, said: "Unilever is a
significant addition to OSDL’s membership and is the first of many global
corporations we expect to be joining us to contribute to improving Linux."

Linux will play a key part in the simplification of Unilever's IT
infrastructure. It will deliver improved technology focus and global
solutions of higher quality, with greater speed of implementation.
Operational and cost efficiencies will be maximised through increased server
utilisation and more simple change management. The gradual move will
eventually reduce IT equipment costs by over Euro10 million per year.

Martin Armitage, head of Unilever's Global Infrastructure Organisation
(GIO), said: "Along with many other global organisations, we must ensure
that our IT technology is compatible with more than one operating system.
With the adoption of Linux and working with our applications and business
colleagues, we will deliver a quality, lower cost, standard operating system
environment for Unilever."

Subject: "Software Wars" map updated
Date: 19 Aug 2003 13:30:05 GMT

The "Software Wars" map has just been updated!

The "Software Wars" map shows the state of the software world in a
graphical form. Since 1998, it has been periodically updated to
reflect changes in the software industry, the antitrust trial,
Microsoft's dominance with respect to the rest of the industry and the
growing popularity of the Free Software/Open Source movement. The
latest update, from August 10, incorporates the SCO lawsuits and the
reactions from IBM, Red Hat and the GNU/Linux community. "A picture is
worth a thousand words", and you will find this image shows an
interesting perspective on current events :-)
It can be viewed at

http://www.atai.org/softwarewar.png

or

http://www.atai.org/softwarewar.jpg

and past versions (dated back to 1998) can be accessed from the top of
the page of

http://www.atai.org/

Enjoy!

Subject: ink_level v0.1 - check the ink level of your printer
Date: 19 Aug 2003 13:30:08 GMT

Hi!

Version 0.1 of ink_level is now available. ink_level is a kernel module
for the 2.4 series of the linux kernel which enables you to check the
ink level of your printer simply by reading a file in the /proc
directory.

Currently only the HP Deskjet 5550 is supported, but support for other
printers will be added soon. It comes with a tool which helps you get
support for your printer if your printer is not yet supported.

Uterm purports to be a unicode / utf-8 terminal emulator for the
Linux FrameBuffer Console.

It is similar in concept to kon and jfbterm, popular and current
terminal emulators for distros with CJK [ Chinese/Japanese/Korean ]
Linux support.

Please see http://members.ispwest.com/hanpaul/uterm.html for info.

Date: 19 Aug 2003 13:30:18 GMT

Our web site http://governmentforge.org exists to help Linux users in
state and local government find each other.

At the same time, we're providing a resource center, discussion
groups, software application indexes, howto's, news and downloads.

We have opportunities for service providers who want to build eGov web
sites and to help with desktop rollouts; conversions from Microsoft to
Linux servers; any LAMP development and help desk support where one
works from home.

A big appetite for Linux exists at the state and local government
level, but our community has produced few applications we can offer
for downloads.

The government sector offers a big opportunity. We just need to become
known.

If you or someone you knows has a Linux application running in
Government and they wish to let others know about it, please contact
me or our webmaster.

We welcome you to this exciting opportunity.

Thanks

Tom Adelstein

Subject: Wipe2fs - Wipe unused space in ext2/3 filesystems
Date: 19 Aug 2003 13:35:07 GMT

Greetings all,

Wipe2fs is a tool that can be used to wipe all unused space in ext2/3
filesystems, so you can be reasonably sure that the deleted information
cannot be recovered by common utilities or computer forensic tools. It
works entirely in user-space with the help of libext2fs, so kernel
support is not necessary for it to function.

You can find the it at http://www.csie.ntu.edu.tw/~b6506063/wipe2fs/

Wipe2fs is made available under the terms of GPL.
