Subject: sysstat-4.1.4 - System performance tools for Linux
Date: 7 Jul 2003 19:15:02 GMT

Hi everybody,

This is to announce the release of sysstat, version 4.1.4 for Linux.
Various minor bugfixes are included in this version, like the way sar handles
overflow with interfaces counters.
Also option « -x SUM » was removed from sar, since the calculation of the total
number of faults made by the system was rather tricky. Last, the code was
greatly cleaned, and sysstat should now be really lighter than before as a
consequence.

sysstat 4.1.4 is a development version and is available on ibiblio's Linux
archive site (formerly known as Metalab):
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/status/
108kB sysstat-4.1.4.tar.gz
110kB sysstat-4.1.4-1.src.rpm
62kB sysstat-4.1.4-1.i386.rpm

The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools for
Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.

To learn some more about sysstat, check out

Changes vs 4.1.3 are:
2003/07/01: Version 4.1.4
WARNING: Daily data files format has changed, and is *not* compatible with the
previous one! Delete existing data files in /var/log/sa directory! [0x2160]
* Fixed the way overflow conditions were handled by sar for interfaces
counters.
* On really big machines with 100 GB of memory or more, the values read by sadc
in /proc/meminfo would get truncated and cause havoc in the calculations. This
is now fixed.
* iostat and sar can now read many more disk entries in /proc/stat if
necessary.
* Option "-x SUM" removed for sar. It was used to tell sar to display the total
number of minor and major faults made by the system. Unfortunately, the
calculation was tricky, and the results were uncertain...
* NLS updated. Polish translation added. Also proper charset and encoding
declarations added to fix msgfmt warnings and allow gettext to recode between
various charsets (e.g. German translation will be shown properly both with
LANG=de_DE.ISO-8859-1, and LANG=de_DE.UTF-8)
* Code 'sanitization'.
* Manual pages updated.
* README and FAQ files updated.

Meeting: 12th July 2003

The Greater London Linux User Group is having another meeting.

That's right, there is a GLLUG meeting on Saturday 12th July 2003, between
12noon and 5pm.

University. This is in the shadow of the BT Tower, the nearest tube stations
are Great Portland Street, Warren Street and Goodge Street. You will find a
map at [ http://www.wmin.ac.uk/static/maps.asp ] or via www.streetmap.co.uk

NOTE: you will need to sign in at the front desk to gain access to the
building. There are building works at the moment but we'll post signs if the
entrance has moved.

installing, uninstalling, verifying, querying, and updating computer software
packages. The talk will introduce rpm itself, go on to cover developing and
building packages and how to deploy.

Paul is an systems administrator who has worked a variety of package

Other activities

The network lab, as it is known, can be used for rolling demos of Linux being
installations and to experiment with configuration.

We also have the Multimedia room. This will be used for people to set is up
their own machines. You can do this if you have something to show off, or you
are looking for a solution to some problems. If your are bringing in your own
machine, make sure you sign it in when you arrive, otherwise security won't
let you take it when you go! We'll have monitors, keyboards, mice, and
powerleads available. [So no need to lug all that stuff].

We will have access to some of the latest iso images and a CD-Burner.

If you decide to bring a PC, please have the serial number written down ahead
of time, in case it needs to be registered at the ground floor Reception. We
may also take a picture of you and your PC as proof of ownership.

The network lab and the multimedia room are the places you can go to, should
you be looking for sanctuary away from the formal talks. If we're lucky the
Refectory on the ground floor will have its food and drinks machines
restocked.

After

After the meeting, for those that want, the group will move off to 'The Green
Man' public house, very close to Great Portland Street. Even if you were
unable to make the daytime meeting, please feel free to join us at the pub.
To help you find the pub have a look at this external streetmap link.
