Subject: ANNOUNCE: Danubio Streaming Architecture 2.1.0 released
Date: 22 Jun 2003 16:35:01 GMT
Danubio Streaming Architecture 2.1.0
Danubio Streaming Architecture (DSA) is a fast, reliable,
and scalable framework for the development of multimedia
networked applications. Programmers can embed multimedia
features such as audio/video stream playback, recording,
processing, and transmission over wired/wireless networks
into their applications by using DSA's simple and effective
C++ API. DSA is based on a complex plugin architecture that
make it able to interact with any audio and video device.
Changes: Architecture enhancements were made for memory
management and data transmission over wires among pins.
Full support for Video4Linux V1 devices (without audio)
was added. Full support for Axis Network Cameras was added.
An XViD encoder/decoder filter was added. Support for OSS
sound recording and playback was added. There are no audio
filters at this time.

Subject: KSnuffle-2.2 released
Date: 22 Jun 2003 16:40:01 GMT
Thanks!
==========[snip]========
KSnuffle, the KDE network packet sniffer, is now available for download
from:
ftp://195.92.31.34/ksnuffle-2.2/ksnuffle-2.2.tgz
This version has been built against a fairly recent KDE2.1 CVS snapshot.
The manual pages are online at
http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.manual
The main change from 2.1 is a work-around for the forthcoming KDE
change whereby setuid programs will not be run.
Please note that if the remote sniffer interface is not compatible with
2.0 and earlier versions. If you use remote sniffers, then you will need to
reinstall the rsnuffle daemon.
A few people have asked about RPMs. Sorry, none avaiable. I've got a
non-standard setup anyway, and there are two many combinations (RH, Suse,
Mandrake, installed under /usr or /opt/kde, etc.) to do this. Volunteers?
Regards
Mike Richardson

=====[The Actual Announcement]========================================
KSnuffle is a network packet sniffer for KDE. Features include:
* Basic filtering and packet selection via the GUI
* Advanced filtering and packet selection via filter programs
* Multiple concurrent monitors
* Text and binary logging, plus replay of binary log files
* Textual display of network traffic overview
* Full(er) details of protocol and application data available
* Display of data in TCP/IP streams
* Network load histograms and time-averaged load display
* Parallel display of multiple load histograms
* Save and restored filter and packet selection configurations
* Support for use by selected non-root users
* Plugin support - 0.8 contains plugins for
* TCP/IP stream monitoring
* DNS lookup monitoring,
* Traffic summaries
* End-to-End summaries
In its current state it is, so far as I can tell, quite reliable. The
main area where is is lacking is actually decoding different network
packets. At the moment, it handles basic decoding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP,
plus ARP/RARP and ICMP. Packet decoding does not go down into the
application level except for DNS packets.
Also, KSnuffle uses libpcap-0.4, as used by tcpdump. As I only have access
to Linux boxen, I cannot build or test it for any other Unix. I'd be
interested if anyone else could try.
KSnuffle is available from ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/ksnuffle-2.1/ ; there
is a homepage at http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.html. The latter
contains some screen shots and other information.

Date: 22 Jun 2003 16:40:05 GMT
My tiny Linux distro, called "Puppy" is available for
download, v0.1:
http://www.goosee.com/puppy
This version is experimental, not for newbies.
Puppy has a reasonable suite of X apps and runs entirely
in a 48M ramdisk, which means that everything happens in
the blink of an eye.
Experimenters wanted, to get Puppy to boot off different
media. First take on it is I have Puppy booting off a
USB flash card.
Possibilies are CDROM, Zip, LS120/240, hard drive...
Regards,
Barry Kauler

Subject: ANNOUNCE: BEAST/BSE v0.5.2
Date: 22 Jun 2003 16:40:08 GMT
BEAST/BSE version 0.5.2 is available for download at:
ftp://beast.gtk.org/pub/beast/v0.5
or
http://beast.gtk.org/beast-ftp/v0.5
BEAST (the Bedevilled Audio SysTem) is a graphical front-end to
BSE (the Bedevilled Sound Engine), a library for music composition,
audio synthesis and sample manipulation. The project is hosted at:
http://beast.gtk.org
This new development series of BEAST comes with a lot of
the internals redone, many new GUI features and a sound
generation back-end separated from any GUI activities.
The most outstanding new features are the track editor which allowes
for easy selection of synthesizers or samples as track sources, loop
support and unlimited UnDo/ReDo capabilities.
Note, the .bse file format hasn't fully stabilized yet, so
incompatibilities with future versions may occur, though we're
making every possible attempt to maintain backwards compatibility.
Overview of Changes in BEAST/BSE 0.5.2:
* Implemented unlimited Undo/Redo facilities
* Tracks now support waves directly as Synth input
* Added wave/synth selection dialog for tracks
* Major improvements to file/wave selection dialogs
* Added ability to monitor PCM output to WAVE files
* Reenabled sample rate adjustments in preferences
* Fixed signal handling in scheme
* Fixed time zone handling
* Upgraded to Guile-1.6
* Adapted code to gcc-3.3/g++-3.3
* Documentation improvements
* Robustness fixes to LADSPA loader [Sam Hocevar]
* Improved documentation building process [Alper Ersoy]
* Image (Logo) improvements [Alper Ersoy]
* Bug fixes for 64bit archs [Sam Hocevar]
* Miscellaneous major and minor code fixes
