eOriginal Selects InterSystems’ CACHÉ to Power eCore Business Software
Suite
High Performance, Low Maintenance Key to Post-relational Database Choice
Cambridge, Mass. —June 3, 2003—InterSystems Corporation today announced
that eOriginal has chosen the CACHÉ post-relational database for its
Electronic Original® eCommerce product line. InterSystems, the world’s
fastest growing database company, develops and markets CACHÉ, which is
optimized to deliver the performance, scalability and low total cost of
ownership critical to success in Web transaction processing
environments.
A technology innovator in eCommerce, eOriginal develops and markets the
eCore™ Business Suite. eCore is a software framework that enables the
creation, transmission, management, storage, retrieval, sale, transfer
and securitization of authenticated documents or information objects.
The Goal: Improve Performance, Cut Cost of Ownership
Improving application performance while simultaneously reducing the cost
of system ownership were major objectives that led to the selection of
CACHÉ, according to eOriginal Chief Technology Officer Bryan Caporlette.
“High performance is absolutely critical to compete in the eCommerce
sector,” he says. “Our customers also want us to help them lower the
total cost of ownership and to make our product suite as turnkey as
possible. CACHÉ is enabling eOriginal to do it all. CACHÉ delivers
better performance than legacy relational technology, and it provides
tools for easy system administration and management, typically
eliminating the need for a DBA.”
Additionally, CACHÉ object technology was a good fit for eOriginal’s
development strategy. “We’re focused on using best practices in terms of
object design as we build and enhance our products. The powerful
object-oriented development features provided by CACHÉ help to implement
that strategy,” says Caporlette.
“We’re very pleased that eOriginal has selected and certified CACHÉ for
their product line,” says InterSystems Vice President of Strategic
Planning Paul Grabscheid. “We plan to work closely with them as they
expand into industry sectors such as healthcare where InterSystems is
already a recognized technology leader. The synergy between CACHÉ and
the eOriginal product offerings makes for a strong, successful
partnership.“
The CACHÉ-based eOriginal eCore Business Suite is scheduled for general
availability in 3Q03.

Having written O'Reilly's "Building Embedded Linux Systems", I have
put together a course to teach students how to build embedded Linux
systems using only open source and free software packages.
Students taking this 5-days hands-on course will learn how to use
Linux in their embedded systems without having to purchase any
prepackaged distribution, pay any per-unit royalties, or rely on any
single vendor for their Linux needs.
Date and location: 7-11 July, Montreal, Canada
Subjects discussed include:
Building a GNU toolchain, customizing a Linux kernel, manipulating
solid-state storage devices, creating root filesystems, developing
real-time Linux applications.

Subject: ANNOUNCE: TCP/IP Connection cutter - "cutter" 1.00
Date: 10 Jun 2003 07:45:01 GMT
CUTTER 1.00 - June 2003
Network security administrators sometimes need to be able to abort TCP/IP
connections routed over their firewalls on demand. This would allow them to
terminate connections such as SSH tunnels or VPNs left in place by
employees over night, abort hacker attacks when they are detected, stop
high bandwidth consuming downloads - etc. There are many potential
applications.
"Cutter" is an open source program that allows network administrators to
abort TCP/IP connections routed over a Linux firewall or router.
Documentation and downloads are available at:
http://www.lowth.com/cutter
=========================================================================
LICENSE
Cutter 1.00 is released under the terms of GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE
Version 2 (June 1991) and comes with all the usual freedom, openness and
disclaimers associated with that license.
=========================================================================
STATUS
Cutter 1.00 should be considered EXPERIMENTAL. The author is releasing a
tool that works on the systems he has access to (namely: IPCop and
RedHat Linux), and he is seeking input on it's use on other systems,
ideas for improvement, etc.
