NO STARCH PRESS TO PUBLISH "THE OFFICIAL BLENDER GAMEKIT"
Independent Publisher's Offering Shows Power and Flexibility of Blender 3D
Software for Game Design

San Francisco, CA No Starch Press, the official publisher of The Blender
Foundation, will publish "The Official Blender GameKit" (ISBN 1593270046,
$34.95, CD-ROM) in May 2003. Key to this lively introduction to Blender's
3D gaming capabilities is a CD-ROM containing 10 fully functional games
that readers can play and customize. "The Official Blender GameKit" is an
excellent introductory package for learning and applying the basics of game
design.

Blender is the first 3D suite to integrate a game engine with tools for
editing game-logic and creating interactive animation. Because the software
is fully integrated, no programming is required to actually create and
develop games. "Blender unleashes the art of game creation for
non-programmers and 3D artists," explains Ton Roosendaal, creator of
Blender and original producer of "The Official Blender GameKit." "Blender
is the ideal tool for beginners because it allows you to create
high-quality games without typing in a single line of code. Blender is
still ahead of its time with respect to delivering a full cross platform
tool for 3d creation in the entire range from video to 3d games."

Bill Pollock, President of No Starch Press, had this to say about why No
Starch Press chose to publish this book: "Blender is a very robust program
that appeals to serious 3D artists. But to me, this book is about having
fun. The 10 playable games on the CD are worth the cover price alone,
especially because the reader learns how to modify these real games. And,
once modified, they can be released to the public - the reader creates
their own version of a real, playable game. Now that's cool."

Step-by-step tutorials introduce those new to 3D (or new to Blender) to the
fun of creating models and show how to add motion to them and turn them
into simple games. Experienced 3D artists will appreciate the more complex
game demos, the character animation tutorials, and the advanced reference
section. Highlights include modeling a game environment, what makes a
"true" 3D game engine, adding sound, character animation, real-time
materials, advanced scripting with Python, and tutorials for each game on
the CD-ROM.

As publisher of the "The Blender Book" in 2001, No Starch Press continues
to support the expanding Blender design community with the publication of
"The Official Blender GameKit." As the official publisher of the Blender
Foundation, No Starch Press will follow up this effort with the "Official
Blender Bible," in fall 2003.

ABOUT THIS BOOK
"The Blender GameKit" was produced by Not a Number, the company that
developed Blender as a commercial product. Blender continues as an Open
Source project led by Ton Roosendaal, the original Blender creator. Carsten
Wartmann is a 3D designer and writer, best known as the author of "The
Blender Book" (No Starch Press) and "The Official Blender 2.0 Guide" (Prima
Publishing).
