Subject: PB and PG v.2.1.0 - programs for communicating with Microsat satellites
Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 09:41:58 CST
I have uploaded version 2.1.0 of PB and PG for Linux to Metalab.unc.edu.
The file
name is pbpg-2.1.0.tar.gz. I have placed the file and the accompanying
lsm-file in /incoming/Linux. The target directory is /pub/linux/apps/ham.
The file may also be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.amsat.org/amsat/software/Linux/pbpg-2.1.0.tar.gz.
The package has been changed substancially on several points relative to the
previous releases:
1) I have removed all usage of an UDP port as a means to controlling PB.
PB can
now be controlled either throught the control FIFO or by signals.
2) I added a filter to PB so that only packets from the satellite of
interest
are processed by PB.
3) PB now displays how many percent of a file have been received -
provided PB
has heard the FTL0 file header.
4) If the Predict program by KD2BD, John Magliacane, is running in
server mode on
the machine running PB, PBCTRL will (attempt to) display antenna positioning
data and doppler data as an aid in manual satellite tracking. See
README.predict
for details.
5) There have been many minor corrections.
The lsm reads as follows:
Begin3
Title: PB and PG for Linux
Version: 2.1.0
Entered-date: 17 DEC 2002
Description: PB and PG for Linux are programs used for download from and
upload to digital satellites (Pacsats) supporting the FTL0
protocol. This software allows you to directly communicate
with the Microsat series of satellites. It provides a
Curses (Ncurses) based user interface. It features automatic
directory fill requests and simple, rules based file
download requests.
This version of the programs will work with kernel
revisions 2.0.24 or higher.

Subject: Kmc mud client 0.8.0 released
Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 09:42:00 CST
Kmc is a mud client for the K Desktop Environment that aims to be easy
to use but powerful. The two top priorities are power through scripting
and configurability, and user comfort. Features so far include:
* Mud and character profiles to make connecting easier.
* Autologin, reconnection.
* Good integration with KDE (i.e. cut and paste, drag and drop,
restoration)
* Scripting, via an embedded Perl interpreter. User-defined commands,
triggers, timers, etc.
* Logging with and without color.
* Input history with tab expansion.
* Full ANSI support.
* Extreme customization of appearance (change colors, font, wrapping,
tab size).
* Mud toolbar. Connect and login to the click of a button.
* Split and full screen mode.
* Numpad walking, via a Perl script.
The initial public release, 0.8.0, has just been made available; if
you are interested, I invite you to check it out at
http://kmc.sourceforge.net
If you try it out, please leave your opinions at the boards. The
program is distributed under the GPL license.

New features, directly from the FM announce:
A new inversion procedure, which avoids pre-echo artifacts, has been added.
This provides much more accurate correction and allows for the generation

Subject: The Worlds Largest Chess Computer (powered by Linux!)
Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 09:43:22 CST
The ChessBrain project announced the completion of a computational
grid devoted to creating a massive chess computer. Last December
ChessBrain played its first games of chess. The entire system is now
operational and playing several games daily.
Since its inception, the project has been well received by the
international community. ChessBrain has a number of core developers
who are aided by hundreds of contributors from 27 different countries
around the world who donate the use of their computers.
Each contributor runs a small PeerNode program on one or more
computers, which enables their machines to process chess positions for
the central SuperNode. The resulting networks of machine's forms the
ChessBrain Network, a computational grid.
The project is functionally similar to other distributed computing
projects such as Seti@home, Folding@home and distributed.net. To
participate you simply download a client and allow it to run on one or
more computers. Clients are available for Microsoft Windows, Linux
and MacOSX.
Now that ChessBrain is functional, the project has announced its
intention to go for a world record and is currently looking for new
members. The world record will be for the largest number of
distributed computers used to play a single game of chess! The
project has successfully used hundreds of machines in trial tests and
is looking to increase its numbers.
We invite you to visit the project site and learn more about the
project.

Yet another Linux FAQ Ver. 2.2
http://www.cafecomputer.com/faqindex.htm
About: Yet another Linux FAQ is a comprehensive FAQ about the Linux
Operating System. It is a great document for Linux beginners to read.
This FAQ tries to help those new to Linux help themselves. It covers
topics such as kernel recompilation and X Window System configuration.
Changes: This release adds a separate links page and many new links (and
fixes several broken ones). A Palm e-book version of the FAQ has been
created. The pdf, txt, and doc download versions have been updated. The
broken formating on the tips page has been fixed. Section six has been
overhauled. The formating has been changed to increase readability.

Subject: New Online Linux Magazine: Contributers Needed!
Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 09:43:40 CST
There's a new Linux online magazine up right now called, "The New
Penguin Times." Until I register the domain name, the URL is:
http://linuxarticles.gumsole.net.
Everything is setup and now I need to start getting contributions that I
can use to make up the bulk of the magazine. I'm seeking any type of
articles, tutorials and how-tos, columns, comics and other amusing
materials relating to Linux, and any other type of material that would
work well published in a magazine. Materials can be on any topic,
including the social world in which Linux encompasses, but am especially
looking for technical articles, especially in the areas of networking,
scripting, programming and development, server related issues, security,
etc.
I'm looking for both volunteers to become regular monthly writers and
one time contributions.
I especially need articles and regular monthly writers in the area of
programming, mostly focused on Assembly and C/C++, but I would also like
to see the occasional article on other compiled languages as well such
as Pascal, Fortran, etc.
If anyone is interested, please email me at: email2jamez@covad.net
Please be generous. I have a big passion for the Open Source movement
and for the Linux Operating System and am working as hard as I can to
make this become a success. Thanks for everyone's time.]

Subject: Mtools-3.9.9 - use MS-DOS disks without mounting them
Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 09:43:42 CST
Reply-To: alain@knaff.lu
I would like to announce a new release of mtools, a collection of
utilities to access MS-DOS disks from Unix without mounting them.
Mtools supports Win'95 style long file names, FAT32, OS/2 Xdf disks
and 2m disks (store up to 1992k on a high density 3 1/2 disk). Mtools
also includes mpartition, a simple partitioning programing to setup
Zip and Jaz media on non-PC machines (SunOs, Solaris and HP/UX).
Mtools can currently be found at the following places:
http://www.tux.org/pub/knaff/mtools
http://mtools.linux.lu/mtools
and soon at:
ftp://ibiblio.unc.edu/incoming/Linux/mtools-3.9.9.tar.gz
(will be moved to
ftp://ibiblio.unc.edu/pub/Linux/utils/disk-management/mtools-3.9.9.tar.gz)
The md5sums are:
3e68b857b4e1f3a6521d1dfefbd30a36 mtools-3.9.9.tar.gz
3e0a9933d366aef7b49b112432a9c9e4 mtools-3.9.9-2.i386.rpm
This is mostly a maintainance release which fixes a couple of bugs in
the following areas:
- Portability issues (Cygwin, Arm)
- Allow to specify image on command line
- Support for byte-swapping disks and some Atari disks
- Misc mformat fixes (improved fat size calculation)
- Misc Fat32 fixes
- Mcat fixes
There is an mtools mailing list at mtools@www.tux.org. To subscribe
to it, visit http://www.tux.org/mailman/listinfo/mtools . Mailing
list archives are at http://www.tux.org/mailman/private/mtools/ (the
URL is currently only available to subscribers)
