Subject: blueMail 1.0 - a multi-format offline mail reader
Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 11:13:44 CST
I am very proud to announce new major release version 1.0 of blueMail, the
multi-platform, multi-format offline mail reader with lots of new features:
* BBBS reply driver
* Hudson Message Base reply driver
* Packets can now be renamed
* Filter in letter list can now be set on letter body contents
* Greatly improved message text formatting
* Greatly improved quoted text handling
* New handling for "Re: " in subject
* Help available in all windows
* Changes in SOUP, HIPPO, BBBS and Hudson Message Base drivers
* Bug fixes and many improvements
What is blueMail?
=================
blueMail is a multi-format offline mail reader for Unix, DOS, Win32, and
other systems.
It supports the Blue Wave, QWK, QWKE, SOUP, OMEN and Hippo packet formats,
the Hudson and BBBS Message Bases, Unix mail, Eudora and is designed to
be a reasonable alternative to the Blue Wave mail reader. It has a full
screen, colored user interface built with the curses library.
blueMail is free, "open source" software, provided "as is", without
warranty of any kind, distributed under the GNU General Public License.
Its current maintainer is Ingo Brueckl <ib@wupperonline.de> and will not
accept liability resulting from your use or inability to use blueMail.
You can get the latest version from
http://home.wtal.de/ib/bluemail
and, if you need a program creating and posting SOUP packets (requires
Microsoft Windows), try SOUPlate which now comes with English documentation
and is available from
http://home.wtal.de/ib/freisoft
where you can find HMBWRITE (requires DOS), too, which can process the
replies inside a Hudson Message Base reply collection.
Requirements
============
* Unix-compatible (POSIX) system, DOS with DJGPP, Cygwin with Windows, or
OS/2 with EMX
* curses -- tested with ncurses 1.9.3+, and PDCurses 2.2+
* gcc (g++) 2.7.0+ -- may work with other C++ compilers, not tested
* InfoZip, and/or other compressing archivers
* GNU make *may* be required on some systems
* PMODE/DJ (by Thomas Pytel and Matthias Grimrath) and UPX (by Markus
Oberhumer & Laszlo Molnar) is recommended (and used) for the DOS binaries
What's new in this version?
===========================
You can find a list of new features and improvements in the history file
together with a list of new options for the configuration file since
version 0.01.
See INSTALL for the installation procedure, and the man page (bmail.1, or
bmail.txt for DOS, Windows or OS/2) for information on usage.
Tested Systems
==============
blueMail will run on multiple platforms, like
MSDOS 6.22 (DJGPP, PDCurses)
Linux 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 (gcc, egcs, ncurses, PDCurses aka XCurses)
Windows 9x/NT (Cygwin, PDCurses)
and - untested -
OS/2 (emx, PDCurses)
NetBSD (ncurses)
Solaris (curses)
(Please understand that it is impossible to continuously test blueMail on
all platforms, so there may be bugs on platforms other than my developing
platform DOS, but I'll try to fix all bugs I'll be told.)
If you get it running on a dissimilar system, please let me know (along
with any necessary patches).
Ingo Brueckl

Free software use can help in growth
Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Feb. 27
ACKNOWLEDGING the virtues of free and open source software, the Economic Survey presented on Thursday says the Indian Government is actively exploring how such software can be fully utilised in the country.
"The use of free software reduces costs, computer security threats, puts full control in Indian hands and fosters the development of Indian skills in building new technology," the survey said.
The world over, the use of free software such as Linux is on the rise, giving intense competition to companies such as Microsoft whose proprietary software, Windows, today dominates the market.
The survey said many Government agencies and State Governments have started exploiting free software, particularly in the areas of national security, e-governance, Internet-related applications, research and development and for low-cost computing in schools and colleges.
Government agencies are also working towards ensuring that all Indian languages are properly supported in the area of IT, particularly with free software.
The survey has noted that software exports from the country have grown at over 50 per cent for the past five years to the current level of over $1 billion. Hardware exports have also grown sharply to reach Rs 5,871 crore in 2001-02.
The survey said that conducive Government policies have helped the industry achieve this growth, cutting barriers to imports. For instance, in the previous Budget, the peak rate of customs duty was slashed from 35 per cent to 30 per cent.
The Government has also initiated steps such as setting up Controller of Certifying Authorities to facilitate secure digital signatures, a Centre for Information and Network Security in Pune University and an Indian Computer Emergency Response Team for fostering the growth of the IT sector.
