Bangalore, February 20, 2003: MAIT, with the support of IBM India Ltd. and
Department of IT & BT, Government of Karnataka is organising a one-day
National Conference on "Open Source Software: A New Direction for India?"
on the 26th of February, 2003 at Hotel Leela Palace, Bangalore.

The Conference will be inaugurated by Mr. R V Deshpande, Hon'ble Minister
for Large & Medium Industries, Government of Karnataka and the Keynote
address and Valedictory address will be delivered by Mr. Abraham Thomas,
Managing Director, IBM India and Mr. Ashok Soota, President, CII
respectively.

The event would witness a Panel Discussion on "Proprietary Vs Open Source
Software" where the IT Secretaries of leading States and other Govt.
officials who drive the IT in their respective States will be the
Panelists. To name some of them would be, Mr. Rajeev Chawla, Secretary,
e-Governance, Govt. of Karnataka; Mr. Vivek Harinarain, Secretary ? IT,
Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Sanjay Singh, Secretary to CM & Secretary ? IT,
Govt. of Madhya Pradesh and Dr. Harbakhsh Singh, Secretary ? IT, Govt of
Haryana. Mr. Vinay Deshpande, Managing Trustee, Simputer Trust will be the
Moderator of this discussion.

Solutions, Turbolinux, Altosys, etc. will be exhibiting their products.

Describing the objectives of this Conference, Mr. Venkat Kedlaya, Chairman,
Southern Region, MAIT, told ? "the event is to emphasise the importance and
usage of Open Source Software as a viable alternative for rapid deployment
of e-Governance in Government departments and other Government owned
organisations. One of the key issues in deploying Information Technology
solutions to improve Governance is the need for using non-proprietary
software platforms. The Government agencies in Japan, France, Germany,
China and the United States are adopting Open Source Software (OSS) in a
big way. Developments and advances in OSS have helped user agencies to move
to Open Source. Even big companies like IBM, Sun, and HP are supporting the
OSS platform.

He also said that the added benefit to Government is the ability to reduce
Total Cost of Ownership when OSS is chosen. Government can now specify OSS
as an alternative to proprietary software.

Mr. Abraham Thomas, Managing Director, IBM India said, "As the importance
of open source grows in the marketplace, governments around the world are
increasing focus on Linux. Linux brings together all the essential features
for an operating system like security, flexibility, independence, reduced
cost, good performance, reliability and ease of migration. The use of open
computing in the Government IT infrastructure would result in improved
service to the citizen. We at IBM India have undertaken various initiatives
to build awareness and encourage government policy makers to understand the
value open computing brings to the national IT strategy"

The conference would debate on issues and concerns like support, local
language interface, stability, inter operability with legacy applications
and the viability to use OSS in desk top environment.

More than 200 delegates from Central and State Government Departments/
Agencies, Public Sector Undertakings, Corporate Sector and other Users of
OSS and representatives from both IT and Developer communities will be
taking part in this Conference.

I believe this is relevant because Moneydance is the only Linux
application that does online banking, check printing, budgeting,
scheduled transactions, investment management, etc. It also has a
developer's kit to help anyone to write "extensions" or plug-ins.

The St. Louis Linux Users Group (LUG) announces their 5th Linux
InstallFest. At this event, experienced Linux users will assist those
who wish to install and learn about Linux. Anyone who wants to know more
about Linux is welcome to attend. More than 40 people attended the
October 2001 InstallFest, while more than 70 attended during April 2002.

Linux is an Operating System, which acts as a platform between the
hardware and software of a computer system. Linux is an
alternative to the Microsoft Windows line of products. It provides
a wide range of software, while giving users more flexibility
and freedom from proprietary lock-ins. Please see http://www.li.org/
for more information about Linux.

In all cases, you need to bring your computer, monitor, keyboard,
mouse, modem, cables and powerstrips. We will have spare Super VGA
monitors, PS/2 keyboards, and PS/2 mice to substitute for broken equipment.
If you have older or non-standard hardware, you should bring it along.
If you're not sure, bring everything to be safe.

Free copies of popular Linux distributions will be provided on CD. If
you have a specific distribution that you want to install, you can bring
it along as well. Be sure to back up your system before you bring it
in, as the installation process may overwrite existing data.

The InstallFest is hosted by Bo Becuckman West County Ford. They will
be providing space for the installations, and have a high-speed Internet
connection that you will be able to connect to if you have an Ethernet card.

Several members of the St. Louis Linux Users Group and other local groups

Subject: STklos 0.54 - A Scheme compiler/interpreter
Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 19:55:16 CST

This is an announce for the 0.54 release of STklos.

STklos is a free Scheme System (nearly) conform to R5RS. The aim of this
implementation is to be fast as well as light. The implementation is
based on an ad-hoc Virtual Machine. STklos can also be compiled as a
library, so that one can easily embed it in an application.

The salient points of STklos are:
       * efficient and powerful object system based on CLOS providing
           - Multiple Inheritance,
           - Generic Functions,
           - Multi-methods
           - an efficient MOP (Meta Object Protocol)
       * a simple to use module system
       * implements the full tower of numbers defined in R5RS
       * easy connection to the GTK+ toolkit
       * Perl compatible regular expressions thanks to the PCRE package.
       * tail recursive calls are properly implemented

New in this release:
        * Socket Support
        * Added support for SRFI-23 (Error)
        * Added support for SRFI-30 (Nested comments)
        * Added support for SRFI-31 (REC form)
        * Changed the Boehm GC version to 6.1
        * Code cleaning (again) to be accepted by gcc-3.x
        * New Ports: Solaris, Win32, Mac OS X
        * Bug corrections
        * ...

From: Joerg Scheurich aka MUFTI <rusmufti@helpdesk.rus.uni-stuttgart.de>
Subject: white_dune-0.21pl3 (stable) released
Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 19:55:41 CST

====================================
white_dune-0.21pl3 (stable) released
====================================

White_dune is a open source immersive VRML97 editor and animation tool
in development.

    http://www.csv.ica.uni-stuttgart.de/vrml/dune/

VRML97 (Virtual Reality Modelling Language)
("html for 3D"/"OpenGL for dummies") is the ISO 14772 standard
for displaying 3D data over the web via browserplugins.
Examples for such browserplugins under Linux are freewrl or openvrml.

White_dune is a low level VRML97 tool. It can read VRML97 files, display
and let the user change the scenegraph/fields.
White_dune is rather useless as 3D Modeller, except you work with the
new VRML200x type NURBS Node. For artistic work, the usage of a
(static) 3D modeller with VRML97 export features is recommended.
Open Source 3D modellers with VRML97 export under Linux are
wings3d, moonlight3d or art of illusion.

To use white_dune in a immersive (shutterglases) onewall enviroment,
it currently supports OpenGL "quadbuffer" capable stereo visuals for
stereoscopic "toe in" view.
Under Linux this is available either with graphiccards like ATI Firegl4
or Nivdia Quattro or other graphiccards with the commercial XIG-Xserver.
Instead of shutterglases, a CYVIZ xpo box can be used for dual
beamer/polarisation based onewalls.

White_dune has support for various 3D/6DOF inputdevices
(axes only, no buttons yet):
- Ascension Flock of Birds magnetic headtracker (navigation only)
- Labtec Spaceball (via libsball, a software developed by John E. Stone)
- Devices supported by the Xinput X11 interface
- Devices supported by the Linux joystick interface

White_dune is not complete yet, especially in the 3D preview window.
But even if you do not see the node/field in 3D, you can graphically
change the values.

Subject: [ANN]: twander 3.0 Released And Available
Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 19:55:52 CST
Reply-To: tundra@tundraware.com

'twander' Version 3.0 is now released and available for download at:

          http://www.tundraware.com/Software/twander

The last public release was 2.34.

Existing users should upgrade immediately as this release contains
substantial bug fixes and many new features.

What Is 'twander'?
==================

'twander' is a macro-programmable Filesystem Browser which runs on both
Unix-like systems as well as Win32 systems. It embraces the best ideas
of both similar GUI-driven programs (Konqueror, Windows Explorer) as
well as text-based interfaces (Midnight Commander, List, Sweep).

Or, If You Prefer The "Elevator Pitch"
======================================

'twander' is:

    - A better file browser for Unix and Win32. (Developed on FreeBSD.)
    - A way to make browsing the same on all the OSs you use.
    - A macro-programmable tool that lets *you* define the features.
    - A GUI navigation front-end for your shell.
    - A way to "can" workflows for your technically-challenged colleagues.
    - A way to free yourself from the shackles of the mouse.
    - A way to significantly speed up your day-to-day workflow.
    - A Python/Tkinter application - about 2500 lines of code + 1000 comment lines.
    - A RCT (Really Cool Tool) that will have you addicted in a day or two

See the web page for more information and a screen shot. Better still,
download the tarball and read the documentation.

enabler.
7. WZFileCert 1.0: a password protected file content
certification/verification tool for Linux/X86.

Following is a simple description of these software:

WZOLE is the world's first CJK terminal emulator with hot-plugable CJK
language module for Linux/SCO UNIX. Its display performance is the
best among all Linux/SCO UNIX console CJK terminal emulator, and it
consumes much less CPU time and memory than other comparable package.
It's also the most stable and reliable one available today.

AutoFTP is an FTP automation tool without you to setup .netrc or put
clear password in your clear text script, so it's more secure.

AutoSFTP is a similar tool as AutoFTP, but talkes to the SFTP server.

Both AutoFTP and AutoSFTP uses WZFileCert to make sure it talkes to
the genuine FTP or SSH/SFTP package, so in a sense, it could be more
secure than manually run ftp or sftp and key in password.

As an sudo-like tool, CaclMgr could let you grant another user to use
your privilege to run some pre-specified commands. But unlike sudo,
CaclMgr gives every user the freedom to manage his/her own privilege
granting database, in stead of everytime asking root to update the
sudoers file. Easy to use and control.

Use wzshISV, software developer/VAR/system administrator can encrypt
their programs written in SH/KSH/BASH/PERL/Ruby, and if they want,
wzshISV software could put the programs under license protection, so
if without a license issued by them, others will not be able to run
the programs. And the license can be type of
Monthly/Quarterly/Half-Yearly and even Yearly.

You can download these software from http://wzce.tripod.com/ and apply
for DEMO license from there.
