If you know of (i) anyone doing interesting GNU/Linux projects or
implementation in this area or (ii) any FLOSS-related news that deserves
to be noted, please let me know. I'd be very grateful. FN

Subject: Vstr 1.0.0 (string library in C)
Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 22:17:03 CST
About
=====
Vstr is a string library designed for network communication, but
applicable in a number of other areas. It works on the idea of
separate nodes of information, and the length/ptr model and not the
termination model of "C strings". It does dynamic resizing of strings
as you add/delete data.
It can also do automatic referencing for mmap() areas of memory, and
includes a portable version of a printf-like function (which is ISO
9899:1999 compliant, and includes support for i18n parameter position
modifiers).
Other convenience functions are also included, so you can: easily
split data from a string into sections (similar to perl's split
function); and get string data from a socket or put data to a
socket.

The Open Beat Box (OBB) project is really proud to announce the release
of OBB 0.3, our second public release.
OBB is a virtual drum machine. It is a program to make songs with
music sample in loops instead of the traditional method with scores
and instruments.
Among the hi priority goals of the OBB project are the following features :
- Completely skinable user interface
- portability
- easy inter-collaboration between song composers
Images of OBB 0.3 are available:

Hi Everybody,
I am writing a movie DB with Tomcat and MySQL and thought that maybe
somebody else may be interested.
It allows the management of Movies, Actors, Directors, Genres,
Locations, Languages and Loans.
It also allows inserting movies from IMDB, thus virtually without
typing anything (experimental).

Subject: MDB Tools 0.5
Date: Tue, 21 Jan 2003 12:10:47 CST
The MDB Tools Project is pleased to announce the release of MDB Tools
version 0.5
MDB Tools is a suite of libraries and programs to facilatate access to
Microsoft Access databases (MDB databases). More information can be found
at http://mdbtools.sourceforge.net
New items in this release include:
Fast Reads
==========
Large databases should read faster because we are using the page
allocation maps to traverse. export CFLAGS=-DSLOW_READ to get
old behavior.
Documentation
=============
We now have man pages for the command line utilities. A new FAQ is
available and an Installation Guide covers installation and configuration
for specific tasks. gmdb2 has a manual as well.
Jet 4 fixes
===========
Jet 4 (Access 2000/2002) support was enhanced with the addition of arbitrary
precision numerics, bug fixes for memo fields, and support for large tables.
gmdb2
=====
Our graphical interface got an update to Gnome 2.0 and libglade. The
debugger now supports back/forward navigation to traverse the database.
More page types are also now dissected. The SQL window now supports
loading/saving queries, and saving results. General clean ups and usability
fixes.
command line utilities
======================
The command line programs got updates, new options, and fixes. In particular
mdb-sql got some new functionality.

NEW YEAR -- EXPANDED CHARTER -- NEW NAME
As we enter this new year, we're pleased to announce that our
charter is being augmented by the introduction of the Linux
operating system alongside of our original OS/2 areas of
interest, a move which we have been planning for the past
several months. Linux is now rapidly growing in development
and popularity across the nation for many business users as
well as the personal user market.
Consistent with this move, it was appropriate to change our
name to the Philadelphia Alternate Systems User Group (PASUG),
whereby we may also look at other new operating systems, such
as BeOS, for example, and others, at some future time.
Our first meeting of 2003 will be devoted to this long-awaited
introduction of Linux.
COME SEE - Run Linux from a CDROM: *NO INSTALLATION*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Knoppix is a complete *bootable* Linux, booted and also *RUN*
directly from a CDROM drive. Your hard drive is used only for
swap space, plus any storage you might wish to employ.
There is NO installation required. Repeat: NO installation!
Knoppix is an outstanding way to familiarize yourself with the
many features and characteristics of Linux.
Knoppix may be freely downloaded from www.knopper.net, a German
website. But unless you have broadband service, it's not a good
idea to try to download the 700MB file.
Several copies of Knoppix will be made available at the meeting
for raffle and auction. For those who don't want to download the
ISO image file, and then burn a CDROM, orders will be taken for
copies of the CDROM for a nominal service charge.
COME SEE - *LIVE INSTALLATION* of Red Hat Linux
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Larry Lavins and David Moskowitz will conduct a live installation
of the popular Red Hat Linux 8.0, with commentary & explanations
at each major step along the way. Hopefully, this will go a long
way towards dispelling the mystery & fear of Linux installation.
Meeting attendees may also ask relevant questions during the
installation, and discussions are encouraged in order to promote
understanding of the basic installation process. Future meetings
will address advanced installation topics, internet access,
Linux applications, Linux commands, networking, etc.
- - - - -
Other agenda items include announcements, news and raffles.
The usual free refreshments will also be available.

useful information about PASUG activities may be found on our
web site at http://www.phillyos2.org, or contact PASUG Leader

Date: Tue, 21 Jan 2003 12:11:29 CST
Announcing Treeps 1.2.2 For Linux
---------------------------------
Treeps is a X/Motif program for Unix/Linux that is designed to make
monitoring and interacting with the running programs on your system easy
and intuitive. A "real time" tree view shows the relationships between the
processes and is color coded to provide easy interpretation of various
values. The process tree displays any combination of users/groups and
can be used to drill down into process details and then extract key
fields for continuous monitoring. A number of predefined actions can be
performed on processes, such as signaling(killing), tracing or viewing the
man page. Various control mechanisms can be used to fine tune the display
and adjust sampling rates etc. There are also a large number of other
features, please visit the web site for more details.
Changes from 1.2.1
==================
Add updates for Linux 2.4 Kernel's, RedHat 7.3, 8.0 and
a number of other Linux variants. Updates for Solaris 8.0
Add support for Solaris LWP's in tree, LWP table view and with
LWP control panels.
Updates for KDE 3.0
A number of other small improvements and bug fixes.
Treeps runs on various flavors of Unix/Linux, including
Linux 2.* Kernels, Red Hat 5.1-8.0, SuSe, Mandrake, ...
Solaris 5.3 - 5.8+
Unixware 2.0 - 7+
Unix System V.4 Single or Multi-Processor
==============================================================
Requires Motif or LessTif.
Source for all platforms and binary packages for Linux ( e.g. RedHat RPM's
and compressed tar balls ) may be downloaded from:
