From: Duncan Simpson <dps@simpson.demon.co.uk>
Subject: mpkern task parallel programming library released
Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 08:15:28 CST

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

The first release of the mpkern task parallel programming library has been
released. I am boldly calling it release 1.0 and hoping that interest parties
will find it useful (and expose any remaining bugs).

Task parallel programs consist of modules which accept data, process it and
send the results in whatever direction they feel appropiate. mpkern components
are required to accept inputs but free to decide which of their outputs they
use. Unlike some other packages, mpkern has deadlock freedom guarantees that
apply for an arbitary collection of components connected in an arbitary manner.
There are *no* acyclicity requirements (and the more complex example supplied
is not ayclic). I have a CSP proof[*] to back up my deadlock freedom claims.

Highlights of the results obtained include 6.06 times faster on 6 indentical
nodes and 5.27 or 5.25 modes (6 nodes, one of which is 1/4 of the speed of the
rest). The parallel versions probably have a better cache hit rate because they
process less data each.

The finerprints of the PGP public keys used to generate the signatures are

[*] CSP is a process calculus and there are several other choices (I am also
aware of LOTOS, CCS, and the pi-calculus). If calculus makes you think of
integrals then you are on the wrong track.

From: Alexandre Oberlin <aoberlin@netcourrier.com>
Subject: KLocate, KDE front-end for an efficient use of slocate
Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 08:15:35 CST

KLocate is an highly configurable KDE front end to the standard Linux
slocate utility, which uses index files to quickly locate files by
name.
Klocate dramatically enhances slocate's usability by allowing targetted
searchs as well as an easy management of index files for local and
remote file systems, including shelved collections of removable drives,
CDROMs and data DVDs.
Compared to the previouly released xlocate, KLocate has more
functionality and comfort of use, and is configurable from within
the application. You won't have to rescan your volumes to upgrade to
KLocate 0.20, since all DBs are still slocate standard.
You'll need KDE 2.1 or later installed (libs and support) to install
and use klocate, which of course does not mean that KDE must be your
window manager.
KLocate is GPL.
I hope it will save you time and headaches ;-)

Subject: HelpBlocks 1.01, a cross-platform HTML help editor
Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 08:16:02 CST

November 28th, 2002 -- Anthemion Software announces a new
product to help you write cross-platform online help quickly and
efficiently, for deployment on Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac.

Read more about it and download the demo here:

   http://www.helpblocks.com

Windows and Linux developers using HelpBlocks can:

- Easily create the user manual's hierarchical structure.

- Write HTML rapidly with the aid of a syntax-highlighting editor,
macro pre-processor and HTML element catalog.

- Preview help files as you work.

- Create a keyword index for help files.

- Generate and view wxWindows HTML Help and (on Windows only)
   Microsoft HTML Help files.

- Import and edit Microsoft HTML Help projects, or create new
   projects.

HelpBlocks provides tools to make user manual writing as
straightforward as possible. Auto-complete and an attribute
editor speed up HTML element insertion, while specialised
dialogs allow quick selection of page references, colours and
images.

Use HelpBlocks on Windows and Linux (Mac version coming soon),
and deploy your help file within a Windows, Linux/Unix or Mac
application.

HelpBlocks is commercial software.

Wrox Press announces the launch of their new addition to the PHP Shelf -
Beginning PHP4 Databases. (ISBN 1861007825)

This book will teach the PHP developer, the art and science of building
advanced database driven web applications using
PHP with a wide variety of post relational databases, the popular database
abstraction PEAR::DB ,XML native databases such as Xindice. More
importantly, readers will be able to perfect a volition on the correct
database system that they should use in their applications.

While this book assumes a beginner level knowledge of PHP, it assumes a zero
database quotient. After reading the book,
developers will be fluent in database systems and how to take advantage of
them in their PHP applications.

Subject: Helping small ISPs with portal ran on linux - developers needed
Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 08:16:06 CST

Hi, I work at Intel and on my free time I contribute to the Open
Source Portal Network (OSPN). We are looking for volunteers to develop
and support an ISP portal software that would work on Linux servers
and be used freely by hundreds of independent providers to help them
compete with the large ones (AOL, etc...)
Please contact me or take a look at the project website (www.ospn.org)
to help on this.

thanks,

Mauricio Cordova

EMS HiTech Company is announcing the next version (1.1) of PostgreSQL

2. PostgreSQL Export/Import: Possibility of entering the database name
manually added.
3. PostgreSQL Import: now history of opened templates is being saved and you
can quickly load the needed template by selecting it from the list.
4. PostgreSQL Import: some new preferences are now available for
customization.
5. PostgreSQL Export: wizard interface improved.
6. PostgreSQL Export: some export algorithms were optimized.
7. PostgreSQL Export/Import: Several improvements and small bugfixes.

What are EMS PostgreSQL Utils?

EMS PostgreSQL Utils are powerful cross-platform data management utilities
for PostgreSQL Server, which make your work with the server much easier and
faster. Currently PostgreSQL Utils include PostgreSQL Export - a powerful
tool for PostgreSQL data export, and PostgreSQL Import - an utility for
quick importing data to PostgreSQL tables.

What is EMS PostgreSQL Export?

EMS PostgreSQL Export is a cross-platform (Windows and Linux) program to
export your data quickly from PostgreSQL databases to any of 12 available
formats, including MS Excel, MS Word, HTML, TXT, and more. PostgreSQL Export
includes a wizard, which allows you to set export options for each table
visually (destination filename, exported fields, data formats, and many
more) and a command line utility to export data from tables and queries in
one-touch.

What is EMS PostgreSQL Import?

EMS PostgreSQL Import is a powerful cross-platform (Windows and Linux) tool
to import your data quickly from MS Excel, MS Access, DBF, TXT and CSV files
to PostgreSQL tables. PostgreSQL Import includes a wizard, which allows you
to set all the import options for different files visually, and a
command-line utility to execute import in one-touch.

We hope you'll enjoy working with our software.
Thank you for your attention.

Best regards,
EMS HiTech development team.
