Brazil’s largest bank upgrades its AS/400 to iSeries, consolidating its
                     European IT operations in London

LONDON, UK - November 21 – Banco do Brasil has announced that it is

consolidating its European IT operations on three IBM iSeries servers in

its London office. In addition to increasing IT capacity and performance,

Banco do Brasil hopes to make significant savings and ease administration

costs by implementing Linux.

With a network of branches in 30 countries, and nearly 1,000 banking

affiliates in 145 countries, Banco do Brasil needed to update its European

back office banking systems, without disrupting its ongoing business. The

solution is based around three iSeries servers, having been upgraded from

the bank’s existing AS/400 solution. Banco do Brasil has consolidated its

network file servers and implemented Linux, increasing performance,

enhancing its reliability and availability and cutting back licensing

costs.

The first iSeries 820 server continues to run the bank’s core banking

application, but now has increased capacity to handle the entire EU

operations from a single point, substantially reducing administration

costs. The second iSeries 270 Domino server is running mail, for 250

staff throughout the region. The third iSeries 820 Server consolidates

the network file servers connecting six Intel-based IBM xSeries servers,

provides a Storage Area Network and runs Linux for file and print services.

Banco do Brasil expects to achieve significant reductions in total cost of

ownership and improved overall reliability.

The cost savings delivered through systems consolidation will be the

immediate benefit of the new IBM infrastructure, as well as increased

availability and ease of management using Linux on iSeries.

“Banco do Brasil globally has reassessed its IT business needs and we saw

the IBM solution as the best fit to be able to consolidate our European

offices effectively,” said Batista Gomes de Freitas, CIO EMEA and AP, Banco

do Brasil. “With Linux and iSeries, Banco do Brasil will have an

infrastructure that will help us move our business forward as we grow as a

company. It will allow us to leverage our business data and applications

more effectively through closer integration and improved ease of

management. This all adds up to a great competitive advantage.”

“Banco do Brasil’s IT strategy is very much long term focused,” said

Henrik Schlegel, Vice President, eServer iSeries sales, EMEA. “They know

that even in three or four years time they will enjoy high reliability and

flexibility without any IT management headaches. Over 14.000 financial

institutions in Eruope, Mid East and Africa have installed iSeries for

exactly the same reasons" He added : "We were delighted to help Banco do

Brasil make the jump from AS/400 to iSeries to enjoy its increased

performance and benefit from its multiple operating environments,

including Windows and Linux.”

IBM Business Partner Platinum Blue has been closely involved from the start

of the project providing consultancy and iSeries implementation expertise

for Banco do Brasil’s tailor-made solution.

                                  -ends-
