From: Stelian Pop <stelian@popies.net>
Subject: Dump/restore 0.4b32 released
Reply-To: Stelian Pop <stelian@popies.net>

Hi everybody,

A new version of dump/restore, the Linux ext2/ext3 filesystem
backup utilities, has been released today.

This new release features several minor and not so minor bugfixes.
For details, read the changelog, pasted below.

As you all already know it, the dump/restore homepage is located at:
        http://dump.sourceforge.net

Enjoy,

Stelian.

Changes between versions 0.4b31 and 0.4b32 (released November 15, 2002)
=======================================================================

1. Changed dump to use fcntl(F_SETLK) style locking instead
of flock() when locking the dumpdates file. With the old
locking scheme, a local user having read rights on the
dumpdates file could be able to do a Denial of Service attack
on dump. In order to lock the dumpdates file with the new
scheme, the user would need to have write access on the file.
Thanks to Richard Johnson <Richard.Johnson3@ey.com> for
reporting the bug (originally a bugtraq post).

2. Fixed interactive 'ls' which caused spurious errors warnings
about 'undefined filetypes' detected. Thanks to Jorgen Ostling
        <jorgen_ostling@users.sourceforge.net> for reporting this
        bug.

3. Fixed dump's estimate when dealing with sparse inodes.

4. Modified dump to allow setting a blocksize bigger than 32kB
(raised the limit to 1024kB), because newer hardware needs
this for proper operation. Thanks to Dirk Traenapp
        <dtraenapp@users.sourceforge.net> for reporting this.

5. Fixed a bug causing Dump to stop and report an error if an
inode number in the exclude file was followed by some amount
of whitespace. Thanks to Jeffrey Sofferin
        <sofferin@users.sourceforge.net> for reporting this bug.

6. Fixed a bug which caused restore, in some particular cases,
to ask some 'scary' questions and leave a bunch of RSTTMP
directories behind when restoring incremental tapes. Thanks
to Philippe Troin <phil@fifi.org> for reporting this bug and
        providing the test cases.

7. Changed the wording when inodes are excluded from dump:
replaced 'Added inode 7 to exclude list' with
'Excluding inode 7 (resize inode) from dump', as suggested
by Elliott Mitchell <ehem@m5p.com> in a Debian bug report.

Subject: sysstat-4.0.7 - System performance tools for Linux

Hi Linux users,

This is to announce that sysstat version 4.0.7 is now available on
ibiblio's Linux archive site (formerly known as Metalab):
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/status/
102kB sysstat-4.0.7.tar.gz
104kB sysstat-4.0.7-1.src.rpm
65kB sysstat-4.0.7-1.i386.rpm

The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools
for Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.

sysstat 4.0.7 is a *stable* version, which is fully compatible with
Linux 2.4 kernels.
Note that a new sysstat series (4.1.x) is to begin soon to take into
account recent 2.5 kernel changes.

To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/

Changes vs 4.0.6 are:
2002/11/13: Version 4.0.7
* Make data for timestamp 00:00:00 appear in one of the daily data
files when sar/sadc rotates its output file.
* Take out check for non SMP configuration when asking for mpstat -P.
* sargon script updated.
* FAQ updated.

Enjoy!

Subject: =?ISO-8859-2?Q?Guikachu_1=2E3=2E2_=22Habos_kaka=F3=22=3A_GNOME_?=

Dear users of both large and small computing tools,

As a special birthday present to myself, a new development release of
Guikachu is available.

About Guikachu
==============
Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers. The user interface is
modelled after Glade, the GNOME UI builder.

Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/

Features
========
 * Uses GNOME-VFS, you can load files from anywhere, e.g. from the
Web, from an SMB share, from a tarball.
 * Exporting to PilRC .rcp files
 * Support for non-Palm PilRC targets (like the eBookMan)
 * Support for the following PalmOS resource types:
        - String and string list resources
        - Dialog resources
        - Menu resources
        - Form resources
        - Per-application resources (e.g. version number)
 * WYSIWYG Form Editor, with drag & drop capability and visual resizing
 * Flexible, complete undo support
 * Sample file with sample GNU PalmOS SDK-based application
 * Documentation (a complete user's manual)

About these releases
====================
This release is part of the 1.3 development branch, so it's all about
crazy experimentations and not about providing a polished, well-tested
product -- so don't quite replace your 1.2 Guikachu just yet.

New features and improvements:
        * Undo/redo support for every action. Change the
          /apps/guikachu/Interface/undo_size GConf key to manually
tune the size of the undo stack
        * Display '*' in title bar of the main window when current
          file has changed (Christopher)
        * Removed DIALOG window manager flag from windows (fixes
          #93885)

Guikachu uses GTKmm and GNOMEmm for its user interface. I/O is
implemented via GNOME-VFS, the XML storage format is managed with the
libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via libglade. GConf is used
to store user preferences. You will need the versions of these
packages available in the GNOME 1.4 bundle (with the exception of
GNOMEmm which you will need to upgrade to version 1.2.0).
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.

Beware of bugémons!

        Cactus

From: Tony Borras <tonyb@sysdev.org>
Subject: SlakbootIBS Interactive Boot Scripts AVAILABLE

The upgraded SlakbootIBS Interactive Scripts support the newer
kernels running Slackware 7 thru 8.1.

These replacement Slackware Linux boot scripts are intended to
facilitate server configuration at facilities with multiple Linux
servers deployed.

The Linux boot scripts are derived from the original set of Slackware
/etc/rc.d run command (rc) scripts, and upgraded with sysvinit-2.84.
The current IBS Version is compliant with the latest Slackware v8.1
scripts. SlakbootIBS now follows the same version numbers as
Slackware, to avoid confusion.

The scripts provide backward compatibility with older versions of
Slackware, since one of their goal is to simplify server admin across
multiple hosts.

If you need to upgrade or are interested in seeing this new boot style
for
Slackware installations, here are the links:

http://www.sysdev.org/sdev004.htm
ftp://ftp.sysdev.org/pub/lintools/IBS
mailto:support@sysdev.org

SLACKWARE /etc/rc.d STYLE SCRIPTS & TOOLS
              INTERACTIVE BOOT STARTUP (IBS v8.1.0)
                                        FOR
                           SLACKWARE 7.x & 8.x

WHY A NEW KLONE OF SLACKWARE START-UP SCRIPTS ???

First, because I wanted the interactive choices of which servicesto
start where, in a big network, without having to remember what boot
scripts I had modified on each machine. So all systems can now be
programmatically homogeneous as well as dynamic, depending on
what is needed at the moment.

Second, I could not see what was going on during boot with the fast
scrolling and lack of color. Now I no longer have to pay a lot of
attention. If I see red flashing by the corner of my eye, I know I
need to go back and check, because something is wrong. Before, I
did not even know there was a message about something I could have
easily fixed-up. Yes, I know I could have tee'd the screen output,
or read the logs more carefully, but it is not as much fun as a well
formatted console display.

And finally, there was a need to integrate a persistent PPP or DSL
connection to our ISP and firewall start-up, with the re-boot of
Slackware
boxes. That way the network can run unattended. In the case of
power-fail
or crashes, the auto-reboot would still bring the gateway connection up
automatically.

                         ---------------

The SlakbootIBS set of scripts is intended as a template for:
 - System Administrators.
 - those that have an array of Slackware stations with different
H/W - S/W architectures, but wish to have a single debugged set
   of start-up scripts.
 - those that want dynamic boot capabilities because they have
a need for different configurations at different times or are
   testing software.
 - those experiencing configuration boot errors and are trying
to see what is really happening.
 - those that want to manage their NFS and Samba mounts easier.
 - those having problems when mixing ISA cards and ISA Plug'nPlay cards
   on the same motherboard.
 - those wishing to host their own web site via a persistent PPP or DSL
connection with ipchains and/or iptables Firewall.

INSTALLING THIS PACKAGE WILL NOT CLOBBER YOUR CURRENT
/etc/rc.d START-UP!!!
You will need to run /etc/rc.d.IBS/install.sh to do that. Your scripts
wiil be backed to /etc/rc.d.ibssave!

The scripts divide the Slackware boot process into three(3) phases:
     I. Init Hardware Initialization Phase (unchanged)
    II. System Initialization Phase (interactive)
   III. Multiuser Initialization Phase (interactive)

At the start of phases II & III, the screen will clear and a beep
will sound. If you take no actions, the boot will proceed to
completion, as before.

After package installation, read the Slakboot ibs manual page
 - man ibs.

New SlakbootIBS Version 8.1.0 capabilities:
==========================================
* The installation script, /rc.d.IBS/install.sh, will install a
manual page. To view it use 'man ibs'.

* The verbose free-form style of Slackware start-up, we all love,
is preserved but controlled slightly, so we can spot errors,
dynamically modify selections and control what is really happening.

* The start-up screen now uses color to better highlite information
and make errors encountered stand-out. The screen scrolls slower,
  for easier detection!!!

* Pressing Control-S and Control-Q will now HALT and RESUME the
  start-up process, for better reading.

* Phase III is interactive, allowing the administrator to choose
daemons that should be skipped (in realtime) and things like NFS,
SMB mounts, sendmail, MySQL, APACHE, PPP, ISP auto start-up, and
Firewalls. Two sample firewalls are included, rc.ipchains and
  rc.iptables.

The versions of important components are now usually displayed during
boot, like which sendmail, MySQL, Apache, etc...

On Slackware 7.x, only rc.ipchains will be started after a PPP
connection is completed. With Slackware 8.x, default is rc.iptables,
but it will load rc.ipchains if rc.iptables is renamed. The scripts
will handle all firewall related modules, loading and unloading,
  for you.

* For each interactive component, a '[xxxx]' box will be displayed.
The IBS prompt control program /sbin/emit has been improved for
better response sensitivity and keyboard debounce.
While the contents of the box are shown in Red the user can select
to press ESC or any key other than <space> to skip the item.
Interactive component boxes '[xxxx]' can also display '[Done]',
'[Skip]', '[Busy]', '[Down]', or '[Fail]' depending on the result of
the operation. A successfull load of a Linux service or daemon will
turn the component color from red to yellow. A skipped daemon, will
  remove the interactive component box.

* Default rc.inet1 has support for both eth0 and eth1 network cards.

* rc.inet2 and rc.local have support to connect to your ISP and
start a firewall in the background, during start-up, when no
GATEWAY is specified. The installation of a yellow pages NIS client
or server, is now interactively determined at boot time by inspecting
the contents of /etc/yp.conf, if it exists. Otherwise NIS is not
  started.

* Two new scripts have been added. rc.mysql, which will start the MySQL

daemon and rc.sendmail, which now handles both pre-v8.12.0 sendmails
and the newer post-v 8.12.0 sendmails. Start of rc.mysql is optional,
and it is enabled in the new rc.local script. If rc.sendmail is
renamed,
then only the old pre-v8.12.0 sendmail start-up (rc.M) will be used.

* Made some fixes to rc.modules, so that ISA, ISA Plug'nPlay, and
PCI cards can live together better.

* You can modify the setting of the local script variable
'default_sleep',
in the /etc/rc.d IBS scripts, to control how fast or slow the boot is.

INSTALL
=======
SlakbootIBS scripts work with Slackware Version 7.x provided that
your Bash shell version is 2.05.0(1) or above and you have upgraded
to sysvinit-2.83 or above.

execute /bin/bash --version, to check your Bash version.

To install SlakbootIBS we recommend that you execute ./install.sh
from the install directory /etc/rc.d.IBS This will make backups of
your current /etc/rc.d to /etc/rc.d.ibssave and verify your Bash shell,
before overlaying the new scripts over your old ones. Follow the
directions given by ./install.sh to complete your installation,
before reboot. install.sh will NOT OVERLAY your rc.inet1 and
rc.modules,
instead it will copy the IBS versions to *.IBS files and allow you to
edit and rename them to making them active.
