Subject: Announce iBackup 2.22

iBackup simplifies backing up the system configuration files (/etc). You
can run the program from any directory, it will by default save the (maybe
compressed) tarball to /root. It is possible to encrypt the tarball, to
upload the tarball to some other host and run this backup automated in a
cronjob.

I've put together some tools that allow an adminstrator to dynamically
throttle
heavy users of bandwidth. It's under GNU and Beta versions and
documentations can be found at
www.apconnections.net

Comments on viability are welcome! Thanks

Subject: Ottawa Canada Linux Users Group (OCLUG) Meeting, Wed. Nov. 6 - AMANDA

Hi everyone,

This is a reminder for our upcoming Ottawa Canada Linux Users Group
(OCLUG) meeting. It promises to be a fun and practical talk. I hope to
see you all there! Details below.

=========================================================================
  November 2002 General Meeting
=========================================================================

Topic: AMANDA (Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver)
Date: Wednesday, November 6, 2002
Time: 7:00-9:00pm
Cost: Free (Donations to OCLUG appreciated)
Location: Auditorium @ Ottawa Public Library, 120 Metcalfe, Ottawa ON

Brenda Butler will give a presentation on AMANDA (Advanced Maryland
Automatic Network Disk Archiver), a scalable backup software solution.
Summary:

Brenda will describe what she had to do to get AMANDA working on her
small home network of two debian machines. This will be an
introduction to backups and how to manage them. It is also a great
introduction to client-server networking for those who haven't yet
     gotten their feet wet.

AMANDA is free software that will help you schedule and manage your
     backups. See http://www.amanda.org.

We may also have several short 5-minute "Lightning Talks" about various
topics. We will also be announcing and discussing the upcoming "Open
Source Weekend" that will take place in early 2003.

Following the meeting, many OCLUG members convene at a nearby pub for
our monthly Beer SIG. Everyone is welcome to attend. The location is the
Mayflower II pub, 201 Queen St., just east of Bank St.

=========================================================================

Please pass this email on to anyone who may be interested. OCLUG always
welcomes new members to our meetings.

Pick and place: Linux grabs the embedded market

Built with contributions from hundreds of software experts, the
Linux operating system has captured the attention of embedded-system
developers worldwide.

Linux is no longer just the open-source operating system that you must
download, modify, troubleshoot, and maintain yourself for your embedded
application. In fact, commercial Linux support is appearing throughout
the embedded industry. Vendors of bus modules and single-board computers
now offer Linux preconfigured with their products. Silicon vendors are
releasing new microprocessors with Linux configurations available. And
software vendors maintain and support more than a dozen off-the-shelf
Linux distributions as commercial products for embedded applications.

Subject: Linux Research Paper

Hello,

My name is Eser and I am a student at American University in Washington,
D.C., trying to finish up my Master's Degree in Information Systems. I am
also a full-time Linux systems administrator for a data storage company in
Reston, VA. I feel that a lot has been made of Linux's technological and
economical benefits for businesses in the past few years but I am also a
full-time Linux systems administrator for a data storage company in Reston,
VA.I don't think that there has been enough research conducted about the
actual benefits that have been realized by the company after Linux has been
installed and in use.

I am writing a research paper on Linux and what benefits and drawbacks
have actually been gained by businesses that have been using Linux on their
servers and desktops. If you work for a company that uses Linux and have
about 10 minutes, I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer the
following questionnaire concerning your experiences and opinions of Linux.

This information will be used strictly for academic purposes, and I will
share all of my results with anyone who is interested. I would greatly
appreciate any help you can provide. I didn't include the questionnaire as
a separate attachment so you wouldn't have to worry about it containing a
virus or anything malicious like that. If you are willing to help out but
not by these means, please let me know that as well so we can work something
out. If you only want to answer a few questions, that would also be very
helpful.

Take care,

Eser
