Subject: REVIEW: An Indian newsletter on 'software freedom'
REVIEW: An Indian newspaper-style newsletter dedicated to 'software freedom'
By Frederick Noronha
DEHRA DUN? Where's that?
If you're reading this somewhere outside India, you could perhaps not help
wondering where this place is. But Dehra Dun -- a city in the new Indian
province of Uttaranchal, not far from the Indian border with Nepal and China
-- is where the country's first GNU/Linux newspaper-type newsletter comes.
'Software Freedom' (http://www.Software-Freedom.Org) is an eight-page
tabloid. Its first issue has just been released, and editor-publisher Sharad
Kukreti (indiahills at vsnl dot com) was prompt in sending across a copy
Dehra Dun, literally meaning the camp in the valley, lies in a wooded valley
in the Shiwalik Hills. Tourists see it as a pleasant and relaxing stop on
the way to the hills, known for its mild climate and being a popular
retirement town in North India.
Priced at one rupee (approx two cents US... it might seem like an
unbelievable price abroad), the publication focuses on an interesting range
of news from the Free/Libre and Open Source Software world. One of its few
adverts announces Kalculate, an Indian product that claims to be the first
financial accounting solution for GNU/Linux in the Asia-Pacific.
Reports comie in from regions as remote and distant as Venezuela to Finland.
In a post-Internet world, this is no big surprise, of course. The news does
travel fast.
In fact some of this news came up on the Net quite some time back. But this
does not mean that there's no scope for a print-based publication. In
black-and-white, one tends to take it more seriously. Many of the articles
published here brought home their point much more clearly than when read
online. Having a print-based product also helps to share information in an
effective way, in ways which the Net cannot always achieve... despite its
advantages.
There are updates from overseas (Preu Congressman Dr Edgar David Villaneuva
has become the "darling of the Open Source software community"; want to know
how to break Windows?; some quite-funny GNU/Linux humour... depending which
side of the Free/Proprietory fence you're on; etc).
But there are also interesting reports from India.
o In the IBM Linux Scholar Challenge, two Indians names figure among the
three internships at IBM for Summer 2002. The three who made it to the top
25 were Shreeram Jaswanth of IIIT (India), Muthukumar of PSG College of
Technology and Sachin Shah of GLS ICTech.
There's still time to register (uptil Oct 31) for this year's Linux Scholar
Challenge.
Register at http://www6.software.ibm.com/reg/urlxscww/urlxscww-sel
Contest info: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/info/students/contests/linux/
Complete rules at: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/info/students/pdfs/
o Ganesh Prasad, a self-defined "true capitalist" argues in favour of Open
Source. See http://www.osopinion.com/perl/story/9749.html
o Ajith Kumar BP of New Delhi's Nuclear Science Centre puts forth his idea
for setting up affordable Linux Terminal Server solutions in schools. ks
o The Sir George Everest Research Society has launched FLOSS-related
activities, and claims to be among the first -- if not *the* first -- Indian
society to do so. It promises the "biggest bank" on open source and Free
Software, a wide range of e-books, e-journals and e-research papers. "The
society aims to share its collection so that a big community benefit," they
say. Email: research at soccer dot com
One interesting feature is about how top global firms realise the importance
of Free/Libre and Open Source Software (in whatever shape). Some big names
who have embraced include IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, SAP, Computer
Associates, Sun Microsystems.
It was really nice to see big names of the Free Software and Open Source
world "stand together" against Microsoft's attempts to discredit this way of
creating software. In fact this was about the best read in the publication.
Perhaps one wonders why it didn't strike one as hard when seen on the
computer screen....
All in all, a useful product. Interesting work. Deserves support... FN

Subject: mp3blaster 3.1.3 - interactive text-console mp3 player
Date: 25 Oct 2002 18:05:34 GMT
Reply-To: bram@mp3blaster.avontuur.org
Hello,
I have released a new version of mp3blaster, version 3.1.3. Mp3blaster
is an interactive text-based program that plays various (mp3,ogg,wav,..) audio
files. It is one of the very few mp3 players for the text console that
allows full interactive control during playback. Another important feature
is the ease with which one can create and store playlists grouped by albums.
Important recent changes are:
-Changed RPM .spec file such that all compression methods for man files will
be honoured
-Fixed a bug that could cause the playlist repeat to stop (thanks to
Alex Rasmussen for finding the bug)
-Command line options for nmixer changed, and it's now possible to select a
different hardware mixer device.
-Fixed a bug that caused mp3blaster to quit when the user's homedir could
not be determined.
You can download mp3blaster from these places:
http://www.stack.nl/~brama/mp3blaster.html
ftp://mud.stack.nl/pub/mp3blaster/
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/apps/sound/players/mp3/ (soon after this post)

From: sri_krishnan@yahoo.com (S. Krishnan)
Subject: RPCAP 0.23 and rtdump 1.0 released
Date: 25 Oct 2002 18:05:42 GMT
Version 0.23 of RPCAP, the Remote Packet CAPture System for Linux, has
been released. This is a development version, and is labelled
rpcap-devel-0.23.tar.gz. RPCAP is hosted on SourceForge, and its
website is at
http://rpcap.sourceforge.net
You can access the download link from the RPCAP project page at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/rpcap
Right now, only a tar.gz source archive is available.
The new release adds a GNU autotools based build, and significant
improvements in stability. It also includes the first release of
rtdump, labelled rtdump-1.0. Rtdump is a port of tcpdump that
compiles against librpcap to provide remote packet capture and dump
functionality. Some cosmetic changes have also been made to the
website.
While you can check out the full description and feature list of RPCAP
on the website, briefly, it is a remote packet capture system for
Linux (and, quite possibly, other Unix/ Unix-like systems). It
comprises of two components, one a "server" running on a remote target
computer which uses libpcap to sniff the network traffic on that
system, and the other the client which receives the captured network
traffic. The client is actually a library which exposes a 100%
compatible subset of the libpcap API, which acts as a wrapper over a
set of RPC calls to the remote server, which runs as a RPC service.
RPCAP uses the standard Sun RPC implementation available on Linux
based systems. The RPC server stubs in turn invoke their
corresponding libpcap functions on the remote machine. Thus, this
mechanism enables RPCAP to provide a transparent remote
libpcap-compatible packet capture API for remote hosts and networks.
Two mailing lists are available. Rpcap-users is for those interested
in using rpcap for their applications. You can subscribe at
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/rpcap-users
The developer mailing list is rpcap-devel, and the subscription URL is
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/rpcap-devel

Subject: Announcing Release 1.6.5 of the Market Analysis System
Date: 25 Oct 2002 18:05:53 GMT
Version 1.6.5 of the Market Analysis System (MAS) for Linux and Windows
systems is now available. MAS is a software application that provides
tools for stock and futures charting and technical analysis.
The major news for this release is that MAS is now officially available
for Windows systems and MAS can now retrieve its end-of-day data from
yahoo.com, using their free web-retrieval service. See below for
more detail.
MAS is released as free software. You can read more about MAS and
download it at:
http://eiffel-mas.sourceforge.net/
Screenshots for the MAS GUI can be found at:
http://ftp1.sourceforge.net/eiffel-mas/mas_screenshots.html
The MAS 1.6.5 executables are available in the following formats:
setup.exe (easy-install) format for Windows:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/eiffel-mas/setup-mas1.6.5.exe
RPM format for Linux:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/eiffel-mas/mas-1.6.5-1.i386.rpm
tar.gz format for Linux:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/eiffel-mas/mas_linux1.6.5.tar.gz
Linux users should read the release notes before installing MAS:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=117508
MAS 1.6.5 includes the following major changes for both
Windows and Linux:
MAS now has the ability to retrieve end-of-day market data from a web
server using the http GET protocol. This feature is configurable via
a config. file that specifies start and end dates for the data, etc.
A configuration file (mas_httprc) is included to use this feature to
retrieve data from yahoo.com.
MAS now has the ability to create a new indicator whose root function
is an existing indicator. Previously only the pre-defined functions
(TWO_VARIABLE_FUNCTION, etc.) could be used. This provides much more
flexibility for defining new indicators. For example, the Momentum
indicator can be used as the root function with Volume as its input
function to create a "Momentum of Volume" indicator.
For a more complete list of changes, see the server change log at:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/eiffel-mas/SERVER_CHANGE_LOG
(The GUI has not had any significant changes in this release.)
