Do you know someone from *Africa* who would be able to undertake the work
of helping on a research project on the "Significance of Free/OpenSource
Software for Developing Countries"? The time is short, and hence we need
to contact someone early. If you could help, please send a reply to
Niranjan Rajani <niranjan.rajani@maailma.net> with a copy to me
for information. Thanks a lot. FN

From: Thibault Godouet <fcron@free.fr>
Subject: Fcron 2.9.2 - a replacement for Vixie cron and anacron
Date: 8 Oct 2002 15:00:56 GMT
What is new in this release (2.9.2) ?
=====================================
- Added a system fcrontab. Root can access it with fcrontab by using "-u
systab"
- fcrondyn's ls_lavgq, ls_serialq and ls_exeq are now functional.
- mailto can now be set to a non-real user (for ex., an alias).
- fcron now calls shutdown() when a connection from fcrondyn is closed.
Another change in the code should prevent fcrondyn from not returning
to the prompt after a command has been run.
- use open() instead of fopen() to write files, for more security.
- fcrontab sets euid=uid before running the editor.
This is required by some programs (for instance, perl).
- bug fix : using DESTDIR with make did not work with the doc.
- Code clean : changed macros to make parameters clearly different from
vars.
What is fcron ?
==============
Fcron is a scheduler. It aims at replacing Vixie Cron, so it implements most
of its functionalities.
But contrary to Vixie Cron, fcron does not need your system to be up 7 days
a week, 24 hours a day : it also works well with systems which are
not running neither all the time nor regularly (contrary to anacrontab).
In other words, fcron does both the job of Vixie Cron and anacron, but does
even more and better :)) ...
To do so, fcron allows you to use the standard mode in which you tell
it to execute one command at a given date and hour and to make it run
a command according to its time of execution, which is normally the same as
system up time. For example :
Run the task 'save /home/ directory'
every 3h15 of system up time.
and, of course, in order to make it really useful, the time remaining until
next execution is saved each time the system is stopped.
You can also say :
run that command once between 2am and 5am
which will be done if the system is running at any time in this interval.
Fcron also includes a useful system of options, which can be applied
either to
every lines following the declaration or to a single line. Some of
the supported options permit to:
- run jobs one by one,
- set the max system load average value under which the job should be run,
- set a nice value for a job,
- run jobs at fcron's startup if they should have been run
during system down time,
- mail user to tell him a job has not run and why,
- a better management of the mailing of outputs ...
What is planed for next releases ?
==================================
Please go to http://fcron.free.fr/doc/todo.html
(propositions and help are welcome)
How you can help me
===================
If you'd like to help me, please contact me at :
fcron@free.fr
Where can I get it ?
====================
You can either go to the project home page at :
http://fcron.free.fr
or get it from metalab at :
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/daemons/cron/fcron-2.9.2.src.tar.gz
(361kB)
(I've sent the file but it may take some time before it is available on
metalab)
or get it from seul.org (USA) :
ftp://ftp.seul.org/pub/fcron/fcron-2.9.2.src.tar.gz (361kB)
I hope you will enjoy it,
Thibault.

Subject: lirc-0.6.6 Linux Infrared Remote Control

LIRC - Linux Infrared Remote Control, Version: 0.6.6
Copyright (C) 1996 Ralph Metzler <rjkm@thp.uni-koeln.de>
Copyright (C) 1998-2000 Christoph Bartelmus <lirc@bartelmus.de>
(according to GNU General Public Licence 2.0 or later)
LIRC is a package that allows you to decode and send infra-red signals
of many (but not all) commonly used remote controls.
Pre-release versions are currently available at the LIRC homepage:
http://www.lirc.org/
Former versions focussed on home-brew hardware connected to the serial
or parallel port. Descriptions how to build this hardware can be found
on the LIRC homepage. Current versions of LIRC also support a variety
of other hardware. An up-to-date list of all supported devices and the
status of the according drivers is available on the LIRC homepage.
The most important part of LIRC is the lircd daemon that will decode
IR signals received by the device drivers and provide the information
on a socket. It will also accept commands for IR signals to be sent if
the hardware supports this. The second daemon program called lircmd
will connect to lircd and translate the decoded IR signals to mouse
movements. You can e.g. configure X to use your remote control as an
input device.
The user space application will allow you to control your computer
with your remote control. You can send X events to applications, start
programs and much more on just one button press. The possible
applications are obvious: Infra-red mouse, remote control for your TV
tuner card or CD-ROM, shutdown by remote, program your VCR and/or
satellite tuner with your computer, etc. I've heard that MP3 players
are also quite popular these days.
Adding new remotes is still problematic but since version 0.5.2 there
comes the first program that will try to add new remote controls
automatically.
Don't expect much documentation. This is only a pre-release version
and there is still much to be done before LIRC becomes easily
configurable and usable.
For people with a little C/C++ knowledge this should already be possible
with this pre-release. Otherwise, wait for version 1.0.

Reply-To: scoutchess@uschesslive.org
ScoutChess is a program developed to teach kids and young adults the game and
history of Chess. Held on US Chess Live, the official online service of the US
Chess Federation, ScoutChess is a series of workshops taught by International
Masters and available only to scouts. With a world-class instructor list and
a program that's second to none, this is a chance that a chess-playing scout
can't afford to miss.
***************************************************
ScoutChess is expanding its schedule! Many scouts weren't able to make the October
workshop registration dates; we're creating a November workshop to help them
catch up. Please see the ScoutChess website, at http://www.scoutchess.org/ ,
for details.
***************************************************
Do you want to learn chess from a Grand Master? Would you like to polish your
game against an International Master? Your scout could be taking lessons from
two Grand Masters; the current and former US Champions; the current US Women's
Champion; a former US Women's Co-champion; a three-time Pan-American Championship
title holder; even the winner of the 1992 US Open, World Open, National Open,
and Novag Grand Prix. There isn't room for the full instructors' lists of accolades,
so we've listed them in the instructors' bio section, at http://www.scoutchess.org/dojo/8/v.jsp?p=/bios.
Chess benefits logic skills, visual and analytic memory, and many other mental
skills; see the Information Center at http://www.scoutchess.org/ for print studies
of the developmental effects of Chess on kids and younger adults.
If you need more information feel free to call or email our helpful staff.

Subject: ANN: tk7, new multi-platform software for ICOM IC-Q7 walkie-talkie
Date: 8 Oct 2002 15:01:23 GMT
tk7 is a new, open source software for the ICOM IC-Q7A
wide coverage walkie-talkie.
tk7 is written using the Tcl/Tk language so it would work in Linux, MacOS X,
BSD, UNIX, Windows (95 and later), etc.
tk7 lets you:
(1) Read a memory image from the IC-Q7A walkie-talkie, from a native
tk7 file or from a Q7 file created using Goran Vlaski's
IC-Q7 Programming Utility for Windows.
(2) Display and edit settings from a memory image using a graphical
user interface, then write it back to the radio or save it
in a file.
(3) Import memory channel information from a .csv (comma-separated
file).
(4) Extract memory channel information from a memory image
and export it to a .csv (comma-separated values) file.
(5) Sort memory channels by frequencies within one or both banks.
This is the first experimental version of tk7 and is
designed only for the USA version radio, though it may
work with other versions.
I need beta testers who own an IC-Q7 radio and interface cable
to test whether tk7 will read data from the radio, display
it correctly on the graphical user interface, and write data
back to the radio correctly.
You can learn about and freely download a beta test version of tk7
from my home page:
http://parnass.com
I don't warrant the software, though it will cost you nothing.

Subject: ACM Mini Seminar: Autotools
Date: 8 Oct 2002 15:01:26 GMT
Please accept my apologies if this has reached you by some other
means, or if you would not be interested.
Seminar being organized by the ACM Mumbai Chapter:
Topic: Autotools
Day and Time: Friday, October 25, 2002 - 6:30 p.m.
Speaker: Philip S. Tellis
Venue: Lecture Theatre, NCST, Opp. Juhu Shopping Centre, Gulmohur
Crossroad No.9, Juhu, Mumbai, India.
Abstract: Write once, compile anywhere. If you've ever had to port
software written for one OS to another, you've probably also cursed,
torn out hair, or banged your head at the same time. Each OS has its
own idiosyncrasies, and keeping track of them all isn't an easy job.
If all OSes followed POSIX, we wouldn't have this problem, but they
don't and we do. What we need is a bit of magic. Autotools refers to
that bag of tricks that are a must for any serious developer who wants
to see his application install far and wide. Like the scrolls from the
dungeons of Angband, each tool is a secret incantation. If used
correctly, the effect is nothing short of magical. This seminar offers
an initiation into the wizardly world of autotools and will attempt to
decipher each scroll. So gather around, all ye believers and prepare
to be spellbound!
About the Speaker: Philip Tellis is a lazy geek who hates to write the
same code twice. He discovered the autotools while working on the
EveryBuddy instant-messenger, and pursued it out of boredom. Then,
filled with hubris, he used it in most of his large projects. These
days he plays Sim City in all the free time that he's got since he no
longer has to port code to Solaris 2.5.
