NO STARCH PRESS RELEASES THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO BSD
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 11, 2002
San Francisco, CA -- Much to the chagrin of its many users and wannabe users, the BSD operating system (the Berkeley System Distribution, a free Unix) has been without a book to help in managing BSD for many years. As true rocket scientists, BSD experts just aren’t the best teachers because they’re too busy developing and improving the operating system. As author Michael Lucas writes in Unix Review, "Those who know BSD love it. Those unfamiliar with it wonder if it's a version of Linux, or if it runs on Windows NT." BSD has needed a great book to demystify it and make it accessible to millions.
ABSOLUTE BSD: The Ultimate Guide to FreeBSD (No Starch Press, 1886411743, 612 pp, $39.95 US/$61.95 Cdn, Aug 02), by Michael Lucas, promises to be that definitive and badly needed guide to BSD.
ABSOLUTE BSD "focuses on solving real-world problems systems administrators face every day," says Lucas, who is one of only 200 FreeBSD committers (developers who can change FreeBSD’s source code). "Most other BSD books talk about how to implement BSD-based solutions, but don't go beyond that. Absolute BSD talks about how to manage and enhance systems that are already in place." (FreeBSD is the most popular of five major versions of BSD.)
BSD users will learn to:
* Custom configure the FreeBSD kernel
* Use advanced security features like packet filtering and virtual machines
* Manage system-level software and work with add-on software; manage network services and filesystems
* Use DNS, and set up email, Web, and FTP services for servers and clients
* Back up their systems and recover from system crashes, debug problems, and prepare problem reports
* Use performance-testing and troubleshooting tools to monitor their systems
BSD is a robust, reliable, and free Unix whose popularity is exploding. According to Lucas, "The adoption of BSD has accelerated with Apple's adoption of FreeBSD as the base of the new Mac OS X. Collaboration within the various branches of the BSD community is at an unparalleled height."
Available in bookstores everywhere or from No Starch Press directly (http://www.nostarch.com), ABSOLUTE BSD promises to be the complete and authoritative guide that millions of BSD users have been anxiously awaiting.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michael Lucas is one of only about 200 FreeBSD committers, a FreeBSD columnist for the O’Reilly Network, and a contributor to Sys Admin Magazine. He has been a pet wrangler, a librarian, a security consultant, and now works as a network engineer and systems administrator.

Subject: ANN: References for TeX and Friends
From: Michael Wiedmann <mw@miwie.in-berlin.de>
We are pleased to announce the second release of our documentation
project "References for TeX and Friends". This is an ongoing project
with the aim to provide help/reference files for LaTeX (and his
friends like ConTeXt, Metapost, Metafont, etc.) using a
state-of-the-art source format, aka DocBook/XML.
The initial version of this reference was adapted from edition 1.6
of the LaTeX2e documentation, converted to DocBook XML using
texi2db (http://www.tldp.org/downloads/), and further edited manually.
Various output formats can already be generated out of this source file
(HTML, TXT, RTF, PDF, MS WinHelp, PDB f. Palm Pilot plucker reader).
More formats to come (especially wanted is 'vim help format').
Anybody is encouraged to write a converter for his
own desired output format and contribute his/her solution.
Because the source file is XML, the easiest way might be to use XSLT.
Anybody interested in contributing to this project should contact
the authors. Your contribution is very welcome!

Everyone is familiar with Red Hat. One measure of success is when
you inspire a short-lived movement to remind people that Red Hat
is a distribution, not Linux itself. Red Hat undoubtedly could
not agree more. Although most of us think we know what Red Hat
is, there's been a lot of work done at Red Hat that differentiates
them from other distributions. One area Red Hat has put a lot of
effort into is the needs of enterprise-scale Linux operations,
addressing all manner of enterprise scenarios from clusters, to
mainframes, to large desktop rollouts.

Kate will be explaining what Red Hat Advanced Server is, how it
fits into the Red Hat product line, and what makes it different
from previous offerings. Additionally, we'll be getting a look
at Red Hat Network, which is their advanced system management tool
for users from one to thousands of systems.

* Red Hat was recently voted by News.com readers as the second
most relevant technology company to their business.
* Among those using Red Hat in large-scale projects are Google,

Reply-To: feedback@web2ldap.de
HI!
Find a new release of web2ldap with minor feature enhancements and
a fix on
http://www.web2ldap.de/download.html
Ciao, Michael.
***** web2ldap 0.10.13 *****
Release Date: 2002-07-13
Changes since 0.10.12:
New features
* Now all commands in PATH_INFO can be used with
LDAP URLs. If it is not possible to do something
useful hopefully an reasonable error message is
displayed. This makes it possible to directly
point to an entry to be modified or construct a
URL to immediately jump to the password form for a
specific entry.
* A legend of all group entries is displayed in
[groupadm] with [Read] link to each group.
Fixes
* Reconnecting was broken when catching
ldap.SERVER_DOWN. A configuration option could not
be read because of missing class attribute
LDAPSession.host.
* Distinguished names are treated completely as
opaque to avoid problems with using OpenLDAP 2.1
client libs for python-ldap but older OpenLDAP
server versions. Now let's see how that works...

Subject: ANNOUNCE: SCons 0.08 (Python build tool) is now available
Date: 16 Jul 2002 16:53:40 GMT
SCons is a software construction tool (build tool, or make tool) written
in Python. It is based on the design which won the Software Carpentry
build tool competition in August 2000.
Version 0.08 of SCons has been released and is available for download
from the SCons web site:
http://www.scons.org/
Or through the download link at the SCons project page at SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/scons/
RPM and Debian packages and a Win32 installer are all available, in
addition to the traditional .tar.gz and .zip files.
WHAT'S NEW IN THIS RELEASE?
IMPORTANT: Release 0.08 contains the following interface changes:
- The old feature of automatically splitting strings of file names
on white space has been REMOVED.
- The prefix, suffix and src_suffix arguments to the Builder()
function may no longer be callable functions.
- The BUILDERS construction variable should now be a dictionary
that maps builder names to actions. Existing uses of lists,
and the Builder() name= keyword argument, generate warnings
about use of deprecated features.
- The "shared" keyword argument has been removed from the Object
and Library builders. Shared and static objects and libraries
should now be created via the separate StaticObject, SharedObject,
StaticLibrary and SharedLibrary builders. Object and Library are
now synonyms for StaticObject and StaticLibrary, respectively.
This release adds the following features:
- New construction environment Append() and Replace() methods allow
clearer manipulation of construction variables.
- New functions: FindFile(), GetLaunchDir(), SetBuildSignatureType(),
SideEffect().
- New command-line options: --debug=time, --implicit-deps-changed,
--implicit-deps-unchanged, --warn.
- New Builders: Tar.
- Added a new Platform() method with support for the cygwin, os2,
posix, and win32 platforms.
- New "platform" and "tools" keyword arguments to Environment().
- Added a new Tool() method with support for the ar, dvipdf, dvips,
g++, g77, gas, gcc, gnulink, icc, ilink, latex, lex, lib, masm,
mslink, msvc, nasm, pdflatex, pdftex, tar, tex and yacc tools.
- A dependency Scanner for native Fortran "include" statements,
using a new "F77PATH" construction variable.
- The -v option prints more specific version / build information.
changes in the case of drive letters don't cause a rebuild.
- The "target" argument to a Builder call may now be omitted, in which
case the target(s) are deduced from the source file(s) and the
Builder's specified suffix.
- A new "multi" keyword argument to Builder() specifies that it's okay
to call the builder multiple times for a target.
- SCons now automatically falls back to using timestamps for
out-of-date checks if the Python MD5 module can't be imported.
- Multiple calls for a single Alias() will now append values.
The following fixes have been added:
- File names with multiple dots are now handled correctly.
- The --implicit-cache option has been fixed if the scanner returns
an empty list; no longer causes redundant rebuilds when the header
file list changed; has been fixed when a file has no implicit
dependencies and its source is generated.
- C dependency scanning now detects #include file names with characters
like '-'.
- Shared libraries now use LIBS and LIBPATH for dependencies.
- A build directory may now be outside of the SConstruct tree.
- Shared object builds using g++ and gcc now use $CPPFLAGS, too.
- A single interrupt is now guaranteed to halt SCons both when using -j
and not.
- Relative CPPPATH directories now work correctly when using BuildDir().
- SCons now prints an error message if a file can't be unlinked before
being built, instead of just silently terminating the build.
- Emitter functions' use of path names work properly using BuildDir or
in subdirectories.
- Fix .sconsign signature storage so that output files of one build
can be safely used as input files to another build.
Performance has been improved as follows:
- Use our own version of the inefficient stock os.path.splitext() method.
- Cache source suffix computation.
- Code cleanup in MultiStepBuilder.__call__().
- Replicate some logic in scons_subst().
The following changes have been made to the SCons packaging:
- Updated README instructions and setup.py code to catch an
installation failure from not having distutils installed.
The documentation has been updated to reflect the above changes.
ABOUT SCONS
Distinctive features of SCons include:
- a global view of all dependencies; no multiple passes to get
everything built properly
- configuration files are Python scripts, allowing the full use of a
real scripting language to solve difficult build problems
- a modular architecture allows the SCons Build Engine to be
embedded in other Python software
- the ability to scan files for implicit dependencies (#include files);
- improved parallel build (-j) support that provides consistent
build speedup regardless of source tree layout
- use of MD5 signatures to decide if a file has really changed; no
need to "touch" files to fool make that something is up-to-date
- easily extensible through user-defined Builder and Scanner objects
- build actions can be Python code, as well as external commands
An scons-users mailing list is available for those interested in getting
started using SCons. You can subscribe at:
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/scons-users
Alternatively, we invite you to subscribe to the low-volume
scons-announce mailing list to receive notification when new versions of
SCons become available:

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Special thanks to Charles Crain, Jeff Petkau, Anthony Roach, Zed Shaw
and Terrel Shumway for their contributions to this release.

Subject: LILO version 22.3.2 released
Date: 16 Jul 2002 16:53:43 GMT
Reply-To: Read@MY.fullname.FOR.reply.TO
LILO release 22.3.2 is based upon Werner Almesberger's LILO version 21.
Version 22.3.2 is a minor bugfix to version 22.3.1.
o Correct usage of LBA32 in 'mbr.S' (lilo -M ...)
Version 22.3.1 is a minor update to version 22.3.
o Change-rule bugfix in chain loader
o Cosmetic changes to 'lilo -T ebda' output
o Source distribution support for booting arbitrary binaries (pseudo.b)
Version 22.3 is a major update to version 22.2.
o The distribution consists of /sbin/lilo ONLY; all *.b files are
incorporated within this file (builtin).
o A bitmap file header editor is incorporated (-E flag).
o The map file unifies the second stage, chain, message file, and bitmap
files.
o -E, -F, and -B flags are added (see man pages).
o Chain loader will now pass a command line to a second LILO installation.
o Boot protocol 0203h is now supported. "large-memory" option added to
force initial ramdisk loading to highest memory.
o "vga=" on command line allows any radix input.
Versions 22.2, 22.1, 22.0 are major updates to version 21.
o LVM support is added.
o Password CRC-32 polynomials are superseded by 160-bit SHS digests,
which are cryptographically secure.
o RAID1 codes are updated to fix a problem encountered on skewed raid
installations in booting "other=" sections.
o Compilation option allows for specification of more kernels.
o A graphical user interface using VGA 640x480x16 (mode 0x12) is added.
o Secure passwords are implemented using four CRC-32 polynomials.
o RAID1 codes are completely re-written, and correctly implement 'lock',
'fallback', and "lilo -R ..."
THE NEW RAID1 IMPLEMENTATION IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH VERSION 21.
Those using version 21 should read 'README.raid1' before installing these
new codes. There is a compatibility mode (lilo -x mbr-only) for existing
RAID1 installations which are not going to be converted to the Version 22
implementation.

I wrote an article with some detailed instructions how to create a minimal
root file system and a boot diskette that can serve as a basis for
rescue disks and the like. I use uClibc and Busybox and I can still boot
a 2.4 kernel with a RAM disk on a 386 machine with 4MB of RAM. Alas, the
RAM-disk-less version does not boot in 2MB.
Find this article at http://www.xs4all.nl/~lennartb/linux.html
I'm working on an article about boot loaders as well (Linux Boot Loaders
Compared). This contains instructions to make boot diskettes with the
kernel and root file system from the previous article, using the Linux boot
sector, LILO, GRUB and SYSLINUX. This should appear on the same URL real
soon now.
