FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Announcing Open Sound System v3.9.7a
CULVER CITY, CA, June 11, 2002: 4Front Technologies is announcing the
availability of Open Sound System(TM) (OSS) version 3.9.7a for the following
operating systems:
- Linux v2.x (Intel and Alpha)
- Solaris v7/v8 (Intel and Sparc)
- FreeBSD v4.5 (Intel)
- OpenBSD v3.1 (Intel)
- NetBSD v1.5.2 (Intel)
- BSD/OS v4.2 (Intel)
- OpenUNIX v8 (Intel)
- UnixWare v7 (Intel)
- OpenServer v5 (Intel)
- AIX v4/v5.1L (PowerPC)
- Tru64 v5.1 (Alpha)
- LynxOS v4.0 (Intel)
- HP-UX 11 (PA-RISC)
- VxWorks (Intel)
OSS provides sound card drivers for most popular sound cards for the above
operating systems. These drivers support digital audio, MIDI, Synthesizers and
mixers found on sound cards. These sound drivers comply with the Open Sound
System API specification.
OSS provides a user-friendly GUI which makes the installation of sound drivers
and configuration of sound cards extremely simple. OSS supports over 250 brand
name sound cards. OSS drivers provide automatic sound card detection,
Plug-n-Play support, support for PCI audio soundcards and support for full
duplex audio.
What's new in 3.9.7a?
- 4Front Virtual Mixer now comes standard with the OSS drivers. An advanced
version with builtin equalizers, loopback audio recording, individual volume
control is also available with an extra licensing fee. The basic Virtual
Mixer technology allows users to play upto 4 audio apps at the same time.
There is no special programming required (unlike ESD or aRTsd) as the
Virtual Mixer devices behave exactly like the physcal hardware devices.
Virtual Mixer contains 4Front's proprietary profesional quality sample rate
convertors that handle the mixing of various audio applications.
- The soundconf program now provides an Audio-Self-Test option that performs
basic audio tests and reports back any errors.
- Under Solaris x86 and Linux, the Virtual Mixer devices are automatically
used by audio applications requiring no user intervention to configure
applications to use the Virtual Mixer devices. Under all other operting
systems, the Virtual Mixer device needs to be specified when starting
the audio application.
- OSS now gives you the ability to reorder soundcards using the soundconf
program. This feature is useful if there are multiple audio devices in
the system and a particular device needs to be set as the default audio
device.
- New PCI soundcard support for LynxOS 4.0, AIX 5.1L and Tru64 5.1
- Updated drivers for VIA8233, Midiman Delta series, and other devices
This version of OSS with the basic Virtual Mixer technology is available to
all current licensed OSS customers at no addition cost. Virtual Mixer is
not yet available for AIX and Solaris Sparc.
"With the release of v3.9.7, OSS offers superior sound functionality with ease
of use and rock solid stability. The best part about this release is that our
customers get added functionality at no additional cost", said Dev Mazumdar,
president of 4Front Technologies.

Mulinux has plenty of advantages: it is a full-configurable,
minimalistic (it can be stored in a few floppy disks), has plenty of
utilities (Internet connection, browser, client) and can be configured
according to one's needs. It is based on the GNU Linux system, and this
means that everyone can browse the Internet (especially the FTP of GNU
Linux), download those parts of the operative system he is in need of,
and expand it as much as he wants. Especially in the Third World,
millions of old 386 and 486 old PC's can easily be reconverted and work
with a modern level of performances.
In today's world there are hundreds of millions of persons who cannot
afford to buy a last-generation PC, and all those persons could
nevertheless benefit very much from browsing the Internet. All of them
can now reconvert their old computers, connect themselves to the World
Wide Web and download from it was is necessary in order to expand their
operative system, a system which is a adaption of Linux.
MuLinux already has some functions which make it similar to Unix. By a
carful work, a series of MuLinux-based PC's can be converted into a
local network or into a small Intranet.
Those unique features makes MuLinux an operative system which not only
can be used in order to reconvert old PC's, but also a system which must
be ready at hand in the eveneventuality of sudden global or local
catastrophes. By doing so, non-professional users can have at their
disposal an operative system which occupies a very limited space of
memory, and which can easily be expanded or modified.
Now it can easily be downloaded from the site
http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/ozma/mulinux
I hope you have understood the importance of MuLinux in all of its
implication, and am consequently asking you to forward this message to
all of your contacts.

Subject: MATtool 0.29 released
Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 16:28:23 CST
Hi
I'm proud to announce a new release of the Monitoring and Administration
Tool (MATtool). This version adds:
- Local admin scripts can now be added to the command relay. It will take care of distribution, execution, and status gathering.
- A new UI shows the status of all multi-host commands. See immediately
which hosts failed to run a task, and automatically retry it.
and lots more changes and bug fixes...
See the MAT web site for a full description of all the changes:
http://www.ee.ryerson.ca/~sblack/mat
It contains screen-shots, as well as descriptions of MAT's functions.
Below is a description of this release of MAT.
Monitoring & Administration Tool (MAT)
--------------------------------------
MAT is an easy to use network enabled UNIX configuration and monitoring tool.
It provides an integrated tool for many common system administration tasks.
The GUI interface hides much of the differences between UNIX varieties in a
heterogeneous environment. The straight forward interface hides the
complexity of the underling configuration files, allowing many of the mundane
administrative tasks to be safely delegated to others. From a single MAT
console you can manage every UNIX host on your network where the MAT agent
is installed.
Tools:
MAT is a time saver. MAT provides many of the tools a System Administrator
needs during the day, including DNS, NIS, Backups, and Replication. A
powerful feature is the ability to run a command on many hosts at once.
For example a new group could be added to all machines just by doing a select
all, then adding the new group. For generic files a simple editor window is
provided, with this the configuration files for a sites web servers could be
changed, just by editing one.
MAT includes a flexable replication tool for the distribution of files from
a single machine to up to 64 other machines. Complete control of file and
directory properties is provided, as well as bandwidth saving incremental
replication, where only the changed files are replicated.
MAT includes a Backup tool for SCSI tape devices. Tape catalogs are stored
online, so file retreval is easy. Hosts are backed up in parallel, and a
graphical restore tool makes restores easy.
MAT includes a command replication tool, allowing a change on one host to
be made on all selected hosts. By selecting several hosts or groups MAT will
run the next command on all of the selected machines, so changing a password
would cause it to be changed on all hosts. Use with care!
Monitoring:
MAT provides two kinds of monitoring, namely current status, and historic
logs. Through the Status screen you can inspect the current state of the
machine. The MATd screen gives you access to historical data on the machine.
It lets see how heavily loaded you machines are, how the network interface
is performing, and many other parameters.
The MATd daemon allows you to specify alarm thresholds. It can watch your
FTP and Email server for failures. It can watch your disks from getting full.
It can watch the CPU use for thrashing, and several others. You can taylor
your response to each alarm situation, including taking corrective action.
Administration:
The administrative tasks can be delegated to other individuals. A MAT user
can be granted as much or little access as you require. Users can be given
different access rights on all your MAT hosts. Every MAT user can be managed
from a single console. A log file records all the MAT commands issued on a
host, and is viewable from the MAT console.
MAT also includes easy to use interfaces for common UNIX configuration tasks:
User administration
Hosts
Email Aliases
Mounted filesystems
Crontab entries
DNS client configuration
Login message (motd)
Services
Exported (shared) filesystems
DNS domains & records
Most NIS records
Syslogd entries
MAT allows you inspect many of the common system parameters including:
All syslog files (TK 8.0 recommended for this)
Routes
Processes
Lastlog
Diskspace
Exports
The monitoring deamon MATd runs scripts for monitoring of:
Network Connectivity (through ICMP)
Required Processes
Disk usage
CPU use
Run queue
User logins
FTP server status
SMTP server status
Network Interface Activity
SWAP, and Memory use are monitored in the Linux version.
A simple plotting tool allows you to graph the various monitored
parameters. The monitoring scripts are written in Perl, and should
be easy to customize and expand. The MAT probe has been updated to
display it's current status.
Requirements:
=============
For the MAT agent you need a UNIX machine running:
Linux 2.x (glibc)
Solaris 5.6 or better
IRIX 6.x
HPUX 10.20 or 11.00
The Console requires Tcl/TK on at least one host.
Perl is optional
License:
========
Free for single host installations, otherwise it is shareware.

Subject: Trademark Trouble: MobiliX wins Against Obelix
Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 16:28:27 CST
Reply-To: Werner Heuser <wehe@mobilix.org>
In the hearing from June 12th the court
has rejected the arguments of
"Lés Editions Albert René". The court says
the words "MobiliX" and "Obelix" can
hardly be mixed up with each other. Also the work of MobiliX
is dedicated to another audience. This is a great
success for the Free Software Community.
MobiliX is a very wellknown site dedicated to
Linux and BSD on mobile devices (like laptops, PDAs,
cell phones and more). In November 2001 Werner Heuser, owner of
the Open Source project MobiliX - UniX on Mobile Computers
(http://mobilix.org) was charged by "Lés Editions Albert René",
which is owner of the trademark "Obelix".
In their opinion the names Obelix and MobiliX are
very similar. The charge aimed on a deletion of the
trademark "MobiliX" and a compensation fee.
The charge has been discussed in many newsgroups
and mailing lists. It seems to be a very important case
for the Free Software Community, because there are
many projects, which names are also ending on "iX".
Some other projects have even silently withdrawn
there names, because the financial risk of loosing a trademark
case is high.
The documentation of the case is available online
(http://mobilix.org/de/mobilix_asterix.html).
It includes the letters from MobiliX lawerys
Jaschinski Biere Brexl - JBB (http://www.jbb.de).
