Subject: Reply from Linux usage counter
Date: Fri, 24 May 2002 15:01:30 CST

The subject line of your message was LANGUAGE.

This did NOT contain the word "Linux".
The counter has unfortunately been the recipient of many sorts
of messages, some of which were not intended as registrations.
Therefore, the subject line MUST include "Linux" to perform a
simple registration.

Please include the word "Linux" in the subject line, perform
a registration using the form below, or register using the
Web forms at http://counter.li.org/ in order to register.
If you have any unusual problems - contact harald@alvestrand.no!
HELP FOR THE LINUX USAGE COUNTER
================================
This message is intended for you to edit, and send right back to the
Linux-counter@uninett.no address.
DO NOT USE "REPLY"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Practice has shown that putting the counter in the Reply-To: or From:
fields of a message is a GREAT way of causing mail loops, and defending
against them is a *lot* of effort. Therefore, this counter does not do it)

There are two ways of registering: Simple and complex.
For the SIMPLE method, simply send a message with the subject line being
one of:

   I use Linux at home
   I use Linux at work
   I use Linux at school
   I do not use Linux

You can also do combinations, like "I use Linux at home and at work".
The counter will attempt to guess your country of origin, and count you
accordingly. Information about you will not be made public.

Complex registration
====================
The complex features of the counter are accessed by using commands.
A command looks like (for instance) //MACHINE, and starts in the left
column.

You can register MACHINES, FRIENDS and data about YOURSELF (PERSON).
Below is listed an example of each of the sections, with comments that
aid you in filling them out correctly.
Remember to put the value on the same line as the field name!

Only use the FRIENDS section if it is unlikely that the people will
register themselves!

When the templates are accepted by the daemon, they will be added to the
database. Data will be added even if it is not parsed properly.
They may be thrown out in later duplicate elimination, or you may receive
a query from me regarding the validity of the data, but otherwise, they will
be counted.

You can also register using the WWW forms at
http://domen.uninett.no/~hta/linux/counter.html

You can get a report from the counter by specifying the command

  //REPORT <reportname>

The following reports are available:

short - The standard listing of Linux usage, including per-country data
machines - Statistics on registered Linux machines
persons - Persons who use Linux, sorted by country, and some statistics

All these reports are also available by anonymous FTP to aun.uninett.no,
directory pub/misc/linux-counter, or through the World Wide Web at
http://domen.uninett.no/~hta/linux/counter.html

The counter also understands //HELP.
When you use a command, the subject line of the message is *not* recorded
in the counter.

Good luck!

             Harald Tveit Alvestrand
Sorry, the record help is out of order

//END
The END command is only required if you have a mailer that adds stuff
below the last line of the message.

This is the Linux Counter summary as of Wed May 22 19:08:23 2002

There are 126057 persons registerd.
1407 users have been registered by friends.
There are 96784 machines registered.

I guesstimate that between 0.2% and 5% of all Linux users have
registered with the Linux Counter.
So the total number of Linux users is probably between
2,521,140 and 63,028,500 people.

From: johninsd at san dot rr dot com <bitbucket@hotmail.com>
Subject: LILO version 22.3 released
Date: Fri, 24 May 2002 15:02:04 CST
Reply-To: Read@MY.fullname.TO.reply.ORG

LILO release 22.3 is based upon Werner Almesberger's LILO version 21.

Version 22.3 is a major update to version 22.2.

o The distribution consists of /sbin/lilo ONLY; all *.b files are
   incorporated within this file (builtin).
o A bitmap file header editor is incorporated.
o The map file unifies the second stage, chain, message file, and bitmap
   files.
o -F and -B flags are added (see man pages).
o Chain loader will now pass a command line to a second LILO installation.
o Boot protocol 0203h is now supported. "large-memory" option added to
force initial ramdisk loading to highest memory.
o "vga=" on command line allows any radix input.

Versions 22.2, 22.1, 22.0 are major updates to version 21.

o LVM support is added.
o Password CRC-32 polynomials are superceded by 160-bit SHS digests,
   which are cryptographically secure.
o RAID1 codes are updated to fix a problem encountered on skewed raid
   installations in booting "other=" sections.
o Compilation option allows for specification of more kernels.
o A graphical user interface using VGA 640x480x16 (mode 0x12) is added.
o Secure passwords are implemented using four CRC-32 polynomials.
o RAID1 codes are completely re-written, and correctly implement 'lock',
   'fallback', and "lilo -R ..."

THE NEW RAID1 IMPLEMENTATION IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH VERSION 21.

Those using version 21 should read 'README.raid1' before installing these
new codes. There is a compatibility mode (lilo -x mbr-only) for existing
RAID1 installations which are not going to be converted to the Version 22
implementation.

Source code is available for download from:

  http://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo (developer's site)
   ftp://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo

Or from the main distribution site:

   ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo (please use)

See the distribution file 'CHANGES' for details of the differences between
22.3 and prior releases.

Sherwin-Williams Chooses a Big Blue Shade of Linux

Flexibility Key to Paint Company Relying on IBM for its Store Technology
infrastructure

CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 23, 2002 -- Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) today
announced it has chosen IBM to provide the store technology infrastructure
for the company's more than 2,500 stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto
Rico in what is one of the first and largest deployments of the Linux open
source operating system in a chain store environment. The largest paint
company in the U.S. is turning to IBM for the technology and services to
support its customers in a multi-store environment, improve customer
service and create an innovative, flexible front-end system and
user-friendly experience.

By selecting IBM's portfolio of services, consulting and IBM NetVista
personal computers running Turbolinux, Sherwin-Williams establishes the
platform for future improvements, upgrades hardware and software without
disrupting store operations, provides new in-store features such as e-mail,
intranet browsing, and office productivity software and implements a fast
and open platform for quick resolution of technical issues.

"Maintaining leadership in a competitive environment requires us to have
flexible technical solutions, and to build a customer facing platform that
can be easily integrated with our future and existing systems," said Bill
Thompson, Director of Information Technology for Sherwin-Williams' Paint
Stores Group. "The solution we've developed with IBM will help us do that."

The company worked with a Linux services team from IBM Global Services to
design and integrate an in-store network that will consist of 9700 IBM
NetVista M41 small desktop personal computers for all 2500-plus stores, all
running Linux. In addition, all peripherals such as printers, scanners,
cash drawers and switches will be Linux compatible, offering a flexible,
open architecture that is easily adaptable with inventory and sales
applications running on the Linux platform at workstations throughout the
Sherwin-Williams chain. One desktop PC will serve as an in-store server and
another as a manager's workstation, improving customer service by enabling
accessibility to both servers and their respective applications from any
workstation in the store.

Sherwin-Williams' paint tinting and color matching applications will also
be tied into the network, enabling the formulas for custom paint blends to
be filed and kept securely for the customer's next project. The
Sherwin-Williams ' Point of Sale and inventory applications will run in the
Linux environment. Sherwin-Williams will be using IBM E74 color monitors, a
17-inch CRT monitor ideally suited for accurate display of colors and
information.

Pilot installations have already taken place in stores in the Cleveland
area. Main deployment will begin in July and completed by second quarter
2003. The Sherwin-Williams project team designed, engineered, and developed
the overall solution. IBM Global Services will continue to provide Linux
consulting, integration, project management, installation and OEM
procurement.

"Linux is truly a business-friendly operating system that
simplifies the technical infrastructure," said Patricia Gibbs, IBM vice
president, Linux Services. "It can also seamlessly integrate and thus
enhance the quality of service and relationships with all of a company's
constituencies -- its customers, employees, vendors and suppliers.
Sherwin-Williams understands this, and is installing Linux-based technology
in a highly visible, mission-critical area because it provides open-ended
flexibility for whatever the company wants to do next."

From: J Anders <j.anders@informatik.tu-chemnitz.de>
Subject: Linux:Noteedit:Guitar chord diagrams
Date: Fri, 24 May 2002 15:02:14 CST

Version 2.0.0 of the musical scores editor NoteEdit is
available:

http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/noteedit/noteedit.html

New features:

        - guitar chord diagrams
        - chord annotation
        - tse3-0.2.3 (and tse3-0.1.2, tse3-0.1.2) compatible
        - bug converning replay of non-balanced repeats fixed

x Many thanks to Mikhail Yakshin <GreyCat@users.sourceforge.net>.
x I used about 2000 lines from his kguitar project
  x (http://kguitar.sourceforge.net).

x Note! kguitar is still under development. So excuse some
x small problems. For instance: If you can't your preferred chord
x diagram for a certain chord please set the fingers "by hand"!

Some aspects of exporting guitar chord diagrams!
================================================

MUP can deal with chord names and chord diagrams. But it expects
a chord diagram dictionary at top of file. Actually this is
no problem. But if you attach 2 different chord diagrams
for the same chord name there is no possibility to to distinguish
the 2 forms. To give every chord diagram an unique name
NoteEdit adds some underscores to the chord name. So be not
surprised if you named a chord "C7" and "_C7" is printed!

MUP cannot deal with a mix of some chords with chord diagram
and some chords without chord diagram. MUP cannot deal with barre.

MusiXTeX has an additional package called MusiXGui. This allows
to annotate guitar chord diagrams and chord names. It
works but unfortunately there is no possibility to add
a fret information. So, if the fret is not equal 1
NoteEdit appends the fret information to the chord name.

MusiXTeX/MusiXGui can only deal with full barre.

LilyPond cannot deal with guitar chord diagrams. Actually it has a
special feature for chord name annotation. But this is unusable
for NoteEdit export because it tries reverse mapping from
pitch combination to chord name. Thus, NoteEdit exports the
chord names as ordinary uptext. Unfortunately, LilyPond
does not take the width of the uptext into account. So
it can happen the chords overlap.
LilyPond has problems with # signs in uptext. Therfore # is
         converted into +.
PMX can neither deal with chord names nor with guitar cord diagrams.
    Thus, NoteEdit omits the information.
