Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 13:45:04 CST
Guikachu 1.2.0: "The Inevitable Return" released
Guikachu is the premiere solution for creating PalmOS resource files
on UNIX operating systems, and it is also available as Free Software,
as defined by the GNU GPL. "Resources" are data statically linked into
PalmOS applications, and contain information about user-visible things
like strings, windows, and menu structures. Guikachu, based on the
GNOME 1.4 libraries, makes it possible to edit these files in an
easy-to-use way, under the popular GNOME desktop environment.
Guikachu is available for immediate download at
         <http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu>
After half a year of development, we are proud to offer version 1.2,
our new production-quality release, with several new features,
including the following:
        * Support for string list resources
        * Usability improvements in the form editor, including
resizing of widgets via drag-and-drop, and selecting widgets
by drawing a bounding box with the mouse
        * Support for projects targeting non-Palm handhelds
(currently, this is limited to eBookMan palmtops)
        * Improved font support, including escape sequences
        * And, of course, lots of bug fixes and miscellaneous small
          usability improvements
Now that Guikachu 1.2 is out, we'll discuss our future road-map on the
Guikachu mailing list, open to participation to anyone at
        <http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/guikachu-main>
Guikachu is created by Gergõ Érdi, with contributions from Jay
Bloodworth and Christopher Keith Fairbairn. The Guikachu artwork was
done by Basilico Briceno. Source code includes code snippets by Martin
Schulze. Widget icons are taken from the excellent UI editor Glade, by
Damon Chaplin. Special thanks to Murray Cumming and Daniel Elstner for
their C++ hints every now and then, to Marco Antonio Cabazal, Erich
Douglass and Roger So for providing binary packages of Guikachu for
various Linux distributions, and to all our translators who made our
application easier to use for non-English speakers.

Subject: IPTraf 2.7.0 - An IP Network Monitoring Utility
Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 13:45:27 CST
Hello all,
I'm pleased to announce the release of IPTraf 2.6.1.
IPTraf is a monitoring utility for IP networks. It returns network
statistics including information on TCP connections, network interface
counts and load figures, statistical breakdowns by TCP/UDP services, and
counts and load figures per LAN host. It's console-based and doesn't
require the X Window system
CHANGES
IPTraf 2.7.0 is a semi-major release that fixes some significant bugs
and supports additional interfaces. This release fixes statistical
inaccuracies in the detailed interface statistics caused by a failure of
the facility to filter out packets based on interface name, therefore
passing all packets to the monitor on multiple-interface systems such as
routers and firewalls.
This version also supports wireless LAN interfaces and additional DVB
interfaces.
A full log of changes is in the CHANGES file.
AVAILABILITY
IPTraf is available as source code and ready-to-run Intel/glibc2 and can
be downloaded at

Subject: prettyp 2.0: generate "pretty" PS source listings
Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 13:46:11 CST
The prettyp package consists of a suite of programs that generates
"pretty" PostScript source code listings using TeX. For a given
language, comments are rendered in Times Roman italics, keywords in
bold, string literals in Courier; line-numbers, every 10 lines in a
tiny font, and function/ subroutine/ procedure definitions, in a
larger font, are displayed along the right margin.
Languages supported by prettyp are: C, C++, FORTRAN77, ISP, Icon,
Java, LDL, Emacs Mock Lisp, Model, Modula2, Pascal, Perl, Python,
RATFOR, Russell, sh/csh, Tcl, VHDL and yacc grammer. Makefiles and
Imakefiles are also recognized.
New to version 2.0 is support for colour output: comments are
rendered in red, keywords in blue and literal strings in orange; and
improved Perl and VHDL language support.
You can view examples of the output and download the distribution at:

Subject: blueMail 0.10 - a multi-format offline mail reader
Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 13:47:06 CST
I'm proud to announce new version 0.10 of blueMail with lots of new features
(like enhanced addressbook, search and filter function for all windows,
Quote-O-Meter, and much more).
What is blueMail?
=================
blueMail is a multi-format offline mail reader for Unix, DOS, Win32, and
other systems.
It supports the Blue Wave and QWK packet formats, the Hudson Message Base,
Unix mail, Eudora and is designed to be a reasonable alternative to the
Blue Wave mail reader. It has a full screen, colored user interface built
with the curses library.
blueMail is free, "open source" software, distributed under the GNU
General Public License; its current maintainer is Ingo Brueckl
<ib@wupperonline.de>.
You can get the latest version from
  http://home.wtal.de/ib/bluemail
Requirements
============
 * Unix-compatible (POSIX) system, DOS with DJGPP, Cygwin with Windows, or
   OS/2 with EMX
 * curses -- tested with ncurses 1.9.3+, and PDCurses 2.2+
 * gcc (g++) 2.7.0+ -- may work with other C++ compilers, not tested
 * InfoZip, and/or other compressing archivers
 * GNU make *may* be required on some systems
 * PMODE/DJ (by Thomas Pytel and Matthias Grimrath) and UPX (by Markus
Oberhumer & Laszlo Molnar) is recommended (and used) for the DOS binary
What's new in this version?
===========================
You can find a list of new features and improvements in the history file
together with a list of new options for the configuration file since
version 0.01.
See INSTALL for the installation procedure, and the man page (bmail.1, or
bmail.doc for DOS, Windows or OS/2) for information on usage.
Tested Systems
==============
blueMail will run on multiple platforms, like
  MSDOS 6.22 (DJGPP, PDCurses)
Linux 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 (gcc, egcs, ncurses, PDCurses aka XCurses)
  Windows 9x/NT (Cygwin, PDCurses)
and - untested -
  OS/2 (emx, PDCurses)
  NetBSD (ncurses)
  Solaris (curses)
(Please understand that it is impossible to continuously test blueMail on
all platforms, so there may be bugs on platforms other than my developing
platform DOS, but I'll try to fix all bugs I'll be told.)
If you get it going on a dissimilar system, please let me know (along with
any necessary patches).

The wallpaper that came with my RH 7.2 system is all in JPEG. PNG is
more versatile, usually more efficient, and all in all is one of the
Web's best standards--why aren't Linux developers using it?

Subject: [announce] The unofficial PCTel softmodem-Linux Compatibility
Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 13:47:37 CST
Sub: Announcing The unofficial PCTel softmodem-Linux Compatibility Database.
     http://pctelcompdb.sourceforge.net/
Audience: All owners of PCTel chipset based modems.
Hello,
The PCTel Modem-Linux Compatibilty Database is an effort to collect and categorise information
regarding PCTel softmodems' compatibilty in Linux. PCTel provides (unofficially) proprietary
Linux drivers for their modems. However, some of the PCTel softmodems still refuse to work with
Linux, and moreover, to use the drivers, one has to know the chipset present in one's modem.
The project is designed in such a manner that users will be able to add their modem information
(chipset, working status, distributions tested, drivers tested, etc) in a database, which, in turn
can be viewed and searched by users whose modems are still not functioning. I hope that this
project will help in clearing some of the confusions regarding chipsets PCTel modems.
All owners of PCTel modems are requested to visit the project site at
http://pctelcompdb.sourceforge.net/index.php
and submit their modem information.
