* Functions
* Control Structures
* Regular Expressions
* Pattern Matching
* Scope
* Use of Subroutines
* Object Oriented Programming
PERL 2
This class builds on the skills developed in Perl 1 to take your
programming to the next level. Beginning with object oriented
programming, this session will help you extend what you've learned to
further harness the power of the language. Learn to develop more
powerful applications and how to use Perl to facilitate dynamic,
database-driven web development, maximizing your time and your skill.
* Object Orientation - review
* Basic CGI Programming
* Database Usage & SQL
* Building Database Web
Aplications with DBI
* Basic SQL and MySQL
Administration
* Rapid Development and
Web Design Templating
* Intro to modperl
* Writing basic Apache modules
***Prerequisites: Perl 1
Each class meets weekly for 5 weeks. There will be a one week
intermission between Linux 1 and Unix 1.
Classes follow a lecture format. Study groups will meet on the Internet,
and discuss on our education mailing list. Student space for homework
will be provided on our server.
We are offering these two classes as one package for $600, that's $300
each! Just one of these classes would go for $1,200-$2,600 anywhere
else.
NYLXS members get a $20 discount.

Subject: libUTL++ 0.90 released
libUTL++ is a new C++ class library that includes a wide range of highly
re-usable functionality and abstractions. It uses templates in some places,
but generally favors an object-oriented design. The library covers
functionality in areas such as containers, text processing, memory
allocation, date/time manipulation, stream I/O, data compression, and
others. It also includes abstractions to facilitate common tasks such as
object copying, comparison, serialization, etc.
To find out more about the library, visit the project homepage:

I have a short supply.
These books originally sold for $27.95 and are considered by many to
be one of the best books ever written as an introduction/reference to
the Unix Operating System (also applies to Linux, the BSDs, and
Solaris ).
They feature info on Unix, X windows, multiple shells, the Vi editor
the Emacs editor, etc.
The Apendixes and Quick Indexes are tremendous resources for finding
commands. There are summaries of commands for unix, vi, and emacs:
it's worth the price for this alone.
I'm asking $3.00 plus a flat rate shipping/handling charge.
Total price shipped at book rate: $7.00 total in Lower 48 states.
Total price shipped Priorty mail: $10.00 total in Lower 48 states.
For immediate shipment use Paypal; I will, also, accept a prepaid
*Postal* Money order but the books will we be shipped in the order
that I receive payment (I'll return MO's for unfulfilled orders).
Use Paypal and be sure. All sales final.

Next Meeting: Spam Avoidance Technology Using SpamAssassin
on Saturday, May 11, 2002 11 AM to 4 PM
Description: Michael Elkins, E-mail and security guru, will review
spam avoidance technology using SpamAssassin.
http://www.lilax.org/meetings.html
(for listing of all local area LUGs please see http://lalugs.org)
Location: eLinux (PC Mall)
2555 West 190th Street

"But I don't like SPAM!" --Monty Python
For many people, unsolicited emails pushing everything from herbal
Viagra to mail order brides are becoming an increasing annoyance. Simple
filters used to take care of most of the problems, but required active updating.
SpamAssassin is a different approach using a threshold scheme which often
requires no user modification to get great results. This talk will focus on
how SpamAssassin works, and (more importantly) how you can use it to filter out
unwanted junk from your mailbox.
There will be plenty of time for questions, software installation and
trouble-shooting after the main talk. Internet connections via DHCP
are available. Folks typically will bring their laptops as well as PC's,
Mac's and other devices to plug into the network.
If you have not heard Mr. Elkins talk you won't be disappointed. If you
are in the area I would urge you to stop by.
There are no charges for any of these events. There is ample free
parking. Lots of vending machines next to the presentation suite are
available etc...
We extend our thanks to all the good folks at eLinux.com for their ongoing support
of these events.
regards,
Ismet
