noteedit-1.18.3 is available:

  http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/noteedit/noteedit.html

New features:
=============

- no placing restriction for clefs, tempo signatures, volume signatures,
  key signatures, instrument changes
- better placement of chords with accidentals in MusiXTeX
- many different documentation formats (HTML, PostScript, PDF, Booklet)
- compilation problem on some RedHat versions fixed

Note! There is a slight version incompatibility concerning .not files
before < --- > after 1.18.2. Please correct this and store the file. After
that tempo signature should remain at correct place.

MUP users! MUP cannot deal with clefs and key signatures in the middle of a bar.
(There is a trick, but it is too complicated to me.) Thus, I "extended"
the MUP syntax. Of course, the result is not MUP-able.

9menu 1.6 is now available from:

        ftp://freefriends.org/arnold/Source/9menu-1.6.shar.gz

Unpack it in an empty directory.

9menu is a relatively simple program that accepts a list of text:command
pairs on the command line. It creates a simple window that is just
a menu. When clicking on an item, the associated command is executed.
It is intended for use with simple window magnagers, such as 9wm.

Enjoy.

Reply-To: Werner Heuser <wehe@mobilix.org>

The Synaptics TouchPad driver (XFree86 4.x) is programmed by
Stefan Gmeiner. It works with the ACER Travelmate and
probably other laptops (please let me know your results).

The touchpad driver has the following functions (some functions
require features from the touchpad that must be present,
multifinger taps for example):

- Movement with adjustable, non-linear acceleration and speed (Options:
MinSpeed, MaxSpeed, AccelFactor)
- Button events through short touching of the touchpad (Options:
MaxTapTime, MaxTapMove)
- Double-Button events through double short touching of the touchpad
- Dragging through short touching and holding down the finger on the
touchpad
and more.

You may download a binary or source code at
http://mobilix.org/software.html

There are some problems with newer versions of the protocol (firmware),
please let Stefan know, if you have any specs or solutions.
Please direct questions to me.

rexima is a curses-based interactive mixer which can also be used from
the command-line. It runs on any terminal with a screen size of 80x24
or greater. It's intended to be a simple, general, usable mixer
without all the chrome usually present in other mixers.

You can download it from here:

There's also a web page here:

Here's the changes relative to the previous version (from NEWS):

You can now specify an offset for a device's level on the command line
(e.g. `-3' or `+12'). Plain `-' or `+' change the level by 2. Thanks
to Joost Kremers for this idea (or something similar, at least :-)).

PENGUIN SETS UP SHOP IN GOA: RHCE COURSES FROM AGNELGANV

PANJIM, April 17 -- Students can now work towards getting their Red Hat
Certified Engineer qualifications in Goa itself, as the Verna-based Agnel
complex has been selected as partners to impart such education in the state.

Goa, a former Portuguese colony on the west coast of India, is today
widely known as a tourist destination. This small place (population 1.35
million, area 3700 sq km) is also a centre which sends out a number of
emigrants to the outside world, and is trying to build itself up into a
educational centre.

RHCE is a training course that focuses on imparting GNU/Linux education,
related to the 'free' computer operating system that is making waves
worldwide because of its stability, features and robustness.

GNU/Linux is also growing in popularity in Goa, and the local Linux users'
group has some 190 participants, who interact regularly through an
Internet-based mailing list.

Other centres offering GNU/Linux education in Goa include the Government of
India-run ETDC at Saligao Plateau and smaller private firms. But this is the
first time the RHCE will be offered to students in the state.

"At our centres (which include an engineering college, polytechnic, ITI,
etc) we anyway have almost 200 computer systems. These range from 486s to
PIIIs. Rather than keeping them vacant, we decided to put these to
additional use," says Jose Noronha, head of production engineering at the
Agnel Polytechnic.

"Since we have them anyway, we've decided to put them to use after working
hours, or on Saturday or Sunday, when the institution is closed," says
Noronha.

Placements' head Marilac Chagas Silva and lecturer Simao da Cunha (Sr), both
of the Agnel technical education network and Red Hat course coordinators,
undertook a study and felt that GNU/Linux was suitably useful to impart to
students.

Recently, a MoU has been signed with RedHat India, and the Agnel centre is
now their training partners. Red Hat is a US-headquartered corporation
promoting GNU/Linux, and it has launched its India operations through Red
Hat India.

Says Chagas Silva: "We at Agnel's were one of the first to start GNU/Linux
training courses in Goa, back in October 2000. We had participants from
reputed industries, including ControlNet, Sesa Goa and Salgaocars."

But now, the new venture would help them to hold courses on a more organised
basis. "It would also help us evaluate our own training standards," says
Chagas-Silva.

Red Hat courses would lead to the RHCE (or the Red Hat Certified Engineer)
programme. Courses included RH033, which offers the essentials of GNU/Linux,
for beginners.

There is no fixed criteria for entering this course. "It is
performance-based, and not qualification based," says Chagas-Silva. Exams
are conducted over six hours, spread across one day. This include an hour of
written testing, and the remaining five hours divided between debugging and
configuring Linux.

RH133 is the system's admin course, while RH253 is the network
administration and security course, at a more complex and technical level.

Some courses will be conducted on the weekend -- from 8.30 am to 4 pm,
Saturday and Sunday, full day. Spread over two weekends, each 32 hour course
will be finished in a fortnight. In between, practise sessions will be held.

Other courses will be held in the evenings, during weekdays, from 5 to 8 pm,
when laboratories are not required for the regular college and diploma
courses.

"If there is a demand, we could organise courses for particular groups. This
could be done over a full day, depending on the availability of the labs,
even during the weeks," says Chagas-Silva.

Each course would cost Rs 3500 for the basics, and Rs 4500 for the
more-advanced course. Students would be offered a discount of 20-25%. Course
material would come in directly from Red Hat, which has a name as one of the
prominent brands in computer education globally. Students with a 100%
participation would get a Red Hat certificate.

Recently, the faculty will be trained by Red Hat. "Our training is
international and standardised. So it will be virtually the same offered,
whether it's in Vietnam or France, US or India," said Rajiv Banerji, Red Hat
India trainer down in Goa recently.

Currently, Red Hat India -- which was set up a year ago -- has partners in
states like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi. Banerji (39) has authored
books on PHP and Oracle, and says one of his articles on Oracle 8i for Linux
published in the Indian press drew something like 3000 e-mails. (ENDS)

Subject: Guikachu 1.1.7 "GConf ate my children": GNOME Resource editor for
Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 16:14:27 CST

Dear users of both large and small computing tools,

A new development release of Guikachu is available.

About Guikachu
==============
Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers. The user interface is
modelled after Glade, the GNOME UI builder.

Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/

Features
========
 * libXML-based I/O
 * Exporting to PilRC .rcp files (compile with pilrc -H)
 * Support for non-PalmOS PilRC targets (like the eBookMan)
 * String and string list resources
 * Dialog resources
 * Menu resources
 * Form resources
 * Per-application resources (e.g. version number)
 * WYSIWYG Form Editor, with drag & drop capability and visual resizing
 * XSLT style sheets and shell script to generate RCP files from
   Guikachu documents
 * Sample file with sample GNU PalmOS SDK-based application
 * Documentation (a complete user's manual)

About these releases
====================
This release is needed to sync up with the GConf recommendation of
using underscores instead of hyphens in schema and config key names

IMPORTANT! If you have used Guikachu 1.1.x before, you will have to
manually remove the old GConf schema files and config keys before
installing this new release. This is done by recursively removing the
following directories:

        $(prefix)/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/schemas/apps/guikachu
        $(HOME)/.gconf/schemas/apps/guikachu
        $(HOME)/.gconf/apps/guikachu

Yes, I know this sucks ass, but imagine if we postponed this and had
to do this after 1.2, the first stable release that uses GConf!

Note that although it's slowly getting to the 1.2 beta cycle, 1.1.x is
still the development series. Bugs may occur, the documentation may
not be in sync with the real features, build may fail. However, I do
encourage everyone now to give it a try with real projects.

Guikachu uses GTK-- and GNOME-- for its user interface. File I/O is
implemented via the libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via
libglade. GConf is used to store user preferences. You will need the
versions of these packages available in the GNOME 1.4 bundle (with the
exception of GNOME-- which you will need to upgrade to version 1.2.0)
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.
To use the stand-alone Guikachu-to-RCP converter program, xsltproc
(part of the libxslt package) is required.

Beware of bugémons!

From: Russell Marks <russell.marks@ntlworld.com>
Subject: nomarch 1.2 - extract `.arc' files
Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 16:14:43 CST

nomarch lists/extracts/tests `.arc' archives. (It also handles `.ark'
files, they're exactly the same.) This is a *very* outdated file
format which should never be used for anything new, but unfortunately,
you can still run into it every so often (especially if you mess about
with old CP/M stuff). So nomarch is handy as a way to deal with these
files.

(nomarch is primarily intended as a `replacement' for the non-Free
`arc' program.)

You can download it from ibiblio:

  ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/utils/compress/nomarch-1.2.tar.gz

There's also a web page here:

  http://rus.members.beeb.net/nomarch.html

Changes in version 1.2:

Added `-p' option, to extract files to standard output. Thanks to
Hilko Bengen for reminding me about this one.

Fixed DST-related bug which caused some file times to be wrong by an
hour.

Linus is probably going to kill me for this, but in a sober stupor,
I created a couple of "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" / "OBEY.. GIANT"
images based on him. :)
