Subject: sysstat-4.0.4 - System performance tools for Linux
Hi all,
sysstat release 4.0.4 is now available on ibiblio's Linux archive site (formerly known as Metalab):
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/status/
97kB sysstat-4.0.4.tar.gz
99kB sysstat-4.0.4-1.src.rpm
76kB sysstat-4.0.4-1.i386.rpm
The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools for Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and
sa tools.
sysstat 4.0.4 is a *stable* version, which is fully compatible with Linux 2.4 kernels.
To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/
Changes vs 4.0.3 are:
2002/04/07: Version 4.0.4
* iostat is now able to display I/O activity in kB/s with 2.4.x kernels (option -k).
* Fixed a typo in 'sar -W -h' output.
* Try to handle the case when some parameters in /proc/net/dev may overflow ULONG_MAX.
* 'sar -d' now displays sectors per second instead of blocks per second.
* iostat and sar manual pages updated.
* Added a FAQ.
* NLS updated: Russian translation added.

Subject: Archmobx 3.0.2: a simple email archiver
Hi everybody,
archmbox 3.0.2 has just been uploaded and is available for download.
URL: http://digilander.iol.it/yellowjester/archmbox/archmbox.html
These are the changes in this release:
* regular expressions archiving support for fields "cc" and "bcc" was added
* man page was reformatted
Feel free to contact me for bug reports, suggestions, ideas, improvements...
Thak you.
alex
WHAT IS ARCHMBOX?
Archmbox is a simple email archiver written in perl; it parses one or
more regular mbox format mailboxes and performs specific actions.
Originally, it only archived all messages older than a specified date
but support for regular expression based archiviation is now available.
The option to show the result of the archiving processes before the real
archiving takes place was also added. All archived messages are stored
in a new mailbox with the same name of the original one + .archived as
extension (this is the default, but can be changed). Messages are
appended to the archive mailbox to allow multiple executions of the
script against the same mailbox.
If used interactively, it is useful to first list messages, then (by
checking the --list output) select which messages to archive (by date
offset or regexp rules), and then actually perform archiving.

Subject: mapSoN 2.0 prerelease available
From: Peter Simons <simons@cryp.to>
Dear Linux users,
I just released the (hopefully) last beta relase of my mapSoN spam
filter and thought that this tool might be of interest to the readers
of this group. The program is very stable, the documentation is almost
complete and I myself have been trusting mapSoN with my e-mail for
more than three months now -- with some success. You'll find more
information about mapSoN at:
http://mapson.sourceforge.net/
and can download the software from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=37091
Here is a short description of what mapSoN does:
mapSoN is a spam filter that uses a pretty unique approach to keep
unsolicited commercial e-mail out of your mailbox. Rather than
using a set of configured "bad words", a list of "know spammers",
or complicated scoring mechanisms to determine what is spam and
what is not, it relies on "known senders" -- or rather "unknown
senders".
Every time you receive an e-mail, mapSoN will look-up the sender's
e-mail address in a small database file and check whether that
address is in there. If it is, the mail is delivered to your
mailbox, but if it is not, the e-mail will be stored in a spool
directory in your home, using a cryptographic cookie as the
filename. Then mapSoN will send a so called request for
confirmation to the sender's address, asking him to please confirm
his addresses validity by replying and sending the cryptograpic
cookie back. When mapSoN receives a mail with such a cookie in it,
it will move the corresponding mail from the spool directory to
your mailbox and add the sender's address in the mail to the
database.
This approach is based on the fact that spammers usually fake the
sender address of the spam mail. (In fact, they have to, because
sending unsolicited advertisement via e-mail is illegal in most
countries.) But because their sender address is invalid, they will
never see the request for confirmation, they will never reply, and
their spam will sit in that spool file until hell freezes over or
an apropriate cron job deletes it. Using this heuristic, mapSoN
catches way above 95% of all spam mail I receive.
In order to avoid annoying more "real" people, who are trying to
contact you, than necessary, you can import the addresses from
your mail archive into the mapSoN database. Furthermore, you can
set mapSoN up in a way that will let any mail pass automatically,
that is a reply to a mail or a news posting of yours.

Subject: [ANN] Py Launches First Issue
El Segundo, CA – 2002 March 11 – Py, an independent technical zine for
Python software developers, announced today the launch of its first
issue.
"I don't have a lot to say as I'm still exhausted from the
last-minute, whirlwind editing session and now only have the tedious
task of shipping ahead of me. The shakes from the caffeine are making
it a bit difficult to focus right now, but I'm very happy with how
the first issue turned out," said Bryan Richard, Editor and
Publisher.
Preorders for the first issue, which started 2002 February 01, topped
out at just over 300 copies.
Cover price for this landmark publication is $3.00 US and $5.00
Foreign and can be ordered at the website www.PyZine.com.
For more information visit the website www.PyZine.com or email
cook@pyzine.com.
About Py (the zine)
It's a zine. About Python. It's not nearly as ambivalent as this
release probably makes it sound.
About Py (the publishing empire)
Py is largely the work of its contributors and Bryan Richard -- who is
utterly disenchanted with the whole press release process and its
oft-repeated verbiage. Bryan is just some guy from Southern California
that wants to spread the good word about Python, drinks way too much
coffee, and listens to a lot of indie rock when he isn't listening to
a lot of jazz. With the launch of Py he is one step closer to owning
Hearst Castle. He can be reached at

Reply-To: tillmann.steinbrecher@anandtech.com
FileArchiveSearch 0.5 - http://www.t-st.org/fas/
FileArchiveSearch (FAS) is a catalog system for CD-ROMs or any other
media. It lets you search for files on your CD collection. Wildcards in
the search keywords are supported, as well as browsing of the CDs. FAS is
written in PHP4 and works on any UNIX/Linux platform using Apache and
PHP4.X.
Think of it as a web-based "WhereIsIt"; compared to the real WhereIsIt,
the functionality is more limited, for now. FAS supports the following
basic features:
* Searching for a keyword in your CD archive
* Browsing CDs (using the list file, without needing the actual CD)
* Adding new CDs to the archive
* Deleting CD list files from the archive.
FAS was written with the requirements of the MP3/picture/video/software
collector in mind.
In addition to the media collection, local directories (e.g. your download
dir or the incoming dir of a local ftp site) can be included in the
search.
FAS is also useful for those who run a private media/software
distribution FTP site: to allow users to do easy dupechecking before
uploading, and to allow users to request stuff available only offline on
CD.
This is the first public release. However, FAS has been tested internally
for several months, and is stable and fully usable.
The FAS homepage is http://www.t-st.org/fas/
However, apart from a few screenshots, there's not much more info there
than in this posting, so you might as well download it directly:
http://www.heatsink-guide.com/fas-0.5.tar.gz
FAS is freeware (GNU GPL)

Tillmann

Subject: Dump/restore 0.4b28 released
Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2002 12:12:11 CST
Reply-To: Stelian Pop <stelian.pop@fr.alcove.com>
Hi,
A new version of dump/restore, the ext2/ext3 Linux filesystem
backup utilities, has been released today.
This new version has several bugfixes and a new mode for reducing the
size of the backup by dumping only inodes' metadata if possible.
The dump/restore homepage is located at:
http://dump.sourceforge.net
The full changelog is appended below.
Enjoy !
Stelian.
Changes between versions 0.4b27 and 0.4b28 (released April 12, 2002)
====================================================================
1. Fixed a bug in the QFA feature which could have caused
a bad tape positionning on restore (causing extra delays in
restore). Credits go to Uwe Gohlke <uwe@ugsoft.de>.
2. Added a small note in the dump man page specifying that
there should be no white space between the option letter and
the -j or -z parameter, thanks to Kenneth Porter <shiva@well.com>
3. Made restore work with older versions of the readline library,
by checking in configure for several extended symbols. Restore
can now be compiled with a readline as old as the 2.0 release
(though it may be a good idea to upgrade it to a more recent
version...). Thanks to Andrew Donkin <ard@waikato.ac.nz> for
reporting the build failures.
4. Fixed a performance problem with the QFA file creation in
dump, which made unnecessary seeks on the tape slowing down
the dump. Thanks to Andrew Donkin <ard@waikato.ac.nz> for
reporting this issue.
5. Removed the inclusion of some kernel headers in the dump
source, which prevented the compile in some kernel/glibc
headers/architecture combination. Thanks to Bdale Garbee
<bdale@gag.com> for reporting the bug.
6. Added the appropriate error message when dump fails to
open the output file for writing. Thanks to Amith Varghese
<amithv@yahoo.com> for reporting this bug.
7. Made restore able to understand large Solaris ufsdump tapes
(containing inodes bigger than 4194304). Sun have introduced
an "extension" to the dump tape format when dealing with
those inodes, which was uncorrectly handled by Linux restore.
Thanks to Uwe Gohlke <uwe@ugsoft.de> for reporting the bug and
providing a test case.
8. Added the -m parameter to dump which optimises the output for
inodes having been changed but not modified since the last dump
('changed' and 'modified' have the meaning defined in stat(2)).
For those inodes, dump will save only the metadata, instead of
saving the entire inode contents. Inodes which are either
directories or have been modified since the last dump are saved
in a regular way. Uses of this flag must be consistent, meaning
that either every dump in an incremental dump set have the flag,
or no one has it.
