Subject: BinaryPatch: A utility to "diff" binary files (call for contributers)
Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2002 21:50:23 CST
Call for contributers.
Source available at: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/binarypatch
(Note: this source is NOT stable yet, although it seems to work. Please be
carefull - use only test data.)
BinaryPatch (released under the GPL) aims to eventually solve the problem
of having to redownload entire ISO-9660 or package files everytime your
favorite distribution is updated.
Most distributions have a lot of commonality from one version to another.
This is strongly reflected in the ability of the user to patch sourcecode
with the "diff" utility from one version to the next. But what about
packages and CD images (binary files)?
BinaryPatch scans an old_file against a new_file and creates a patch_kit
which is (hopefully) substantially smaller in size than the new_file. The
patch_kit records patterns of data found in the old_file that match the
new_file in some way. All unmatchable data is also stored, as well as other
information about the files (md5sums, names, etc.)
The user downloads the patch_kit and creates a new_file out of the old_file
(old_file is unchanged). To an extent it can be assumed that harddrive
capacity is more freely available than bandwidth.
Why are contributers needed?
- Innovative pattern matching (at the moment only identical patterns are
matched.)
- Optimization of pattern matching ability.
- Parallel-processing ability. Because of its pattern-matching principal
this program needs a LOT of processing power (think of DNA pattern
matching ) and runs truly slowly at the moment. The patch_kit only has to
be created once though so one solution could be using "grid computing" to
create the patch_kits or just multi_threaded design as well as possibly
Beowulf cluster ability.
What are the benefits?
- Massive savings as bandwidth is freed. If users do not need to download
whole files all the time it allows more concurrent users to update their
machines, or just frees bandwidth for other valuable uses.
- Reduced download times. If you have a 56k modem and have tried to
download distributions you will know what I am talking about.
How to go about helping?
- Contact me. I will try to coordinate and incorporate all the help I can
get (as far as my abilities allows :-) (sbproxy at icon dot co dot za)
- Get the code and start hacking.
- Make algorithmic suggestions
- Port it to a supercomputer :-)
- Any suggestions welcome.

Subject: TestPlanPro v2.0
Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2002 21:50:32 CST
Greetings!
Are you tired of not knowing whether your software is going to work properly? Or of having to hire high priced consultants to do your testing for you? Software testing professionals can cost from 40 to 90 dollars per hour! Take the mystery and expense out of testing your software with TestPlanPro v2.0.
For those of you that are new to TestPlanPro (TPP), it is the first and only out-of-the-box, test plan creation software on the market. TPP's easy to use wizards will walk you through the test plan creation process and produce a comprehensive test plan along with the test cases and test steps necessary to verify the functionality of the system being tested. TPP v2.0 is great for user acceptance testing and is also being used by the nations leading universities to teach MIS students the proper way to test software applications.
TestPlanPro can be used to enhance your testing efforts even if you already use one of the automated testing tools because the automated tools first require the definition of your test cases and test steps before they can even be used. The additional cost of having to fix system bugs that could have been detected prior to software deployment is a luxury that we no longer have. That is why a tool like TPP v2.0 is so valuable. Its ease of use makes quality software testing available even in the tightest budget situations.
TestPlanPro v2.0 comes with our unconditional money back guarantee, and free shipping and handling inside the Continental U.S.. Please visit us at www.testplanpro.com today to take advantage of this limited time offer.
For more information, please visit the TestPlanPro website at (www.testplanpro.com) .
If you do not perform testing or quality assurance related tasks, please forward this email to your testing personnel.
Best regards,
Jeff

From: Bernhard Herzog <bh@intevation.de>
Subject: Sketch 0.6.13
Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2002 21:50:00 CST
Sketch stable 0.6.13 released
Sketch is closest to the goal of becoming an
universal drawing application for GNU/Linux [...]
(LinuxUser 9/2001, pp 40, translated from German)
This latest release of the leading Free Software Vector Drawing application,
fixes a minor security hole and adds often requested multi-line text handling.
http://sketch.sourceforge.net/
Everybody running a stable Sketch version should upgrade to 0.6.13.
Note a new way of contributing to Sketch through minipayments (see below).
Bernhard Herzog, March 2nd, 2002
What's new
==========
* Multi-line Text Handling
The multi-line plugin contributed by Christof Ecker makes
designing covers and posters with Sketch a lot easier.
It is now possible to insert and independently edit
complete text blocks. Through the modular design of
Sketch's data-format, the resulting files can still be edited
with earlier versions of Sketch.
This nicely blends in with the curvetext and geoobject add-ons
to bring you a more complete set of functionality
for print design for maps and flyers.
* Updated import filters
Acorn Drawfile import by David Boddie.
Wmf import filter supports PolyPolylines by Antoon Pardon.
SVG import filter parses paths more correctly now.
Illustrator import filter understands text alignment now.
* new command line conversion tools: skconvert and sk2ppm
Skconvert can be used to translate vector formats which
Sketch understands without starting the GUI.
Sk2ppm writes out raster images.
* simple color separation
Sketch supports exporting an image with one .eps file
per color. This is just simple color separation, but should
be suitable for spot-color printing.
* Security fix for included external eps files.
The quoting of EPS filenames when calling ghostscript for
preview rendering purposes was flawed. Existence of the filename
is tested before this call, somewhat limiting the way this could
be exploited.
For rest, check the release notes:
http://sketch.sourceforge.net/relnotes.html
Contributions
=============
Sketch is developed by Bernhard Herzog with help from volunteers.
Beside the possibility to contribute your time and give feedback,
report bugs, help users, write documentation or add code,
there is also the possibility to buy developers time for Sketch.
This is a way of contributing with money and accelerate development.
This 0.6.13 release was supported by visionary individuals
who bought development time which was possible for the first time.
If Sketch is useful for you, please consider paying for it.
http://sketch.sourceforge.net/payments.html
Many thanks go to all contributers, they make it possible
to bring you a vector drawing applications with all needed freedoms and power.
What is Sketch?
===============
Sketch is the leading free vector drawing program for GNU/Linux and
other unices. It's intended to be a flexible and powerful tool for
illustrations, diagrams and other purposes.
It has advanced features like gradients, text along a path and clip
masks and is fully scriptable due to its implementation in a combination
of Python and C. The stable series uses TK as GUI.
The development version builds on GTK+.
Sketch is developed by Bernhard Herzog and
released as Free Software under the Lesser GNU Public License (LGPL).

Subject: List your Linux User Group
Hi,
Just a reminder to those persons that are active in a Linux User Group
(LUG).
The Linux User Group WorldWide (LUGWW) project had a face lift. The forms
should be more clear and the menubar at the left hand should guide you to
the right page for most purposes with single click.
It seems there are far more LUG's out there then there are listed. If you
want people to find your group then visit the project pages
(http://lugww.counter.li.org/) and add your group.
If you are not the right person for your group then please forward it to
the right person instead.
Feel free to forward this message where appropriate to more localized
media (newsgroups/mailinglists) where announcements are allowed. If you
have a translation of this message to forward please send me a copy for
future usage.
Thanks,
Hugo.

Subject: AutoRPM 2.0 Released
Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 10:30:10 CST
Well, after about 2 years of inactivity, I am pleased to finally
announce version 2.0 of AutoRPM.
It is available for download here:
ftp://ftp.autorpm.org/pub/redhat/RPMS/noarch/autorpm-2.0-1.noarch.rpm
Also, I am officially launching the AutoRPM website:
http://www.autorpm.org/
===========================================================
Description
===========================================================
AutoRPM is a program that can do any combination of the following:
mirror RPMs from an FTP site, keep installed RPMs consistent with an FTP
site or local directory, and keep installed RPMs in a cluster or network
of systems consistent. Brand new command-line interactive mode replaces
crappy menu-driven interface in previous versions. Now handles
recursive dependencies!
===========================================================
Changelog
===========================================================
Version 1.9.9 -> 2.0 [stable]:
- NOTE: There are so many changes, I'm sure I'll miss many of them
- Numerous bug fixes and code improvements
- Added auto-download of Term::ReadLine::Gnu
- Replaced the lame "graphical" interactive mode with a command-
line version. Install the perl module Term::ReadLine::Gnu for full
features (tab-completion, history, etc)
- RPM_Opt has been renamed to RPM_Install_Opt and has been moved from
the action blocks to be a global variable.
- Much of the code has been rewritten to eliminate many global variables
and allow for the use of the perl '-w' and 'use strict' options.
- The RPM install routines have been rewritten to eliminate most problems
with cross-dependencies.
