Subject: First public release: Intercom 0.11
Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2002 21:38:10 CST
Intercom is a simple voice over IP (VOIP) utility for Unix systems. It
supports various audio compression formats as well as different sample
rates, enabling the user to choose between high-quality or low-throughput.
It was primarily designed to provide higher audio quality over fast
connections than the available Linux utilities at the time. Intercom is a
console application with a command interface.
Version 0.11 is the first public release of this utility and I consider it
to be alpha quality code. However, feedback is appreciated.

This is an announcement about a new LUG in CREC, Kerela, India.
We run a LUG in CREC (Calicut Regional Engineering College, Kerela,
India) called CREC-LUG. Although there have been Linux users in the
college since about 1995, paradoxically the LUG was founded in Nov 2001!
That partly explains why we haven't had any meetings yet, the other
reason being the exams :-/.
The DNS to our server (called tux.reccal.ernet.in) is shaky and slow
(almost like the whole ERNET), so the site better be accessed at the IP
address. Mail however would come through.
Lug Name : CREC-LUG
Co-ordinator : aaditya sood <ec98310 at matrix.reccal.ernet.in>
Mailing List Url: http://202.41.105.20/mailman/listinfo/lug
Mailing List Subscribe : <lug-request at tux.reccal.ernet.in> or from the Mailing list Url
Mailing List Archives : http://202.41.105.20/pipermail/lug
Lug Website : http://202.41.105.20/
First Meeting : Sometime in Jan 2002
Local Resources : A mailing list+website+~150 people:)
So any of the alumni of the college, anyone near Calicut (or anyone
at all:)) is invited to join. Just send a mail to me for more info.
Happy hacking!

LIRC - Linux Infrared Remote Control, Version: 0.6.5

LIRC is a package that allows you to decode and send infra-red signals
of many (but not all) commonly used remote controls.
Pre-release versions are currently available at the LIRC homepage:
http://www.lirc.org/
Former versions focussed on home-brew hardware connected to the serial
or parallel port. Descriptions how to build this hardware can be found
on the LIRC homepage. Current versions of LIRC also support a variety
of other hardware. An up-to-date list of all supported devices and the
status of the according drivers is available on the LIRC homepage.
The most important part of LIRC is the lircd daemon that will decode
IR signals received by the device drivers and provide the information
on a socket. It will also accept commands for IR signals to be sent if
the hardware supports this. The second daemon program called lircmd
will connect to lircd and translate the decoded IR signals to mouse
movements. You can e.g. configure X to use your remote control as an
input device.
The user space application will allow you to control your computer
with your remote control. You can send X events to applications, start
programs and much more on just one button press. The possible
applications are obvious: Infra-red mouse, remote control for your TV
tuner card or CD-ROM, shutdown by remote, program your VCR and/or
satellite tuner with your computer, etc. I've heard that MP3 players
are also quite popular these days.
Adding new remotes is still problematic but since version 0.5.2 there
comes the first program that will try to add new remote controls
automatically.
Don't expect much documentation. This is only a pre-release version
and there is still much to be done before LIRC becomes easily
configurable and usable.
For people with a little C/C++ knowledge this should already be possible
with this pre-release. Otherwise, wait for version 1.0.
